Chapter 123: Alone
The first connected core waited in a wide chamber supported by pillars of fused bone and stone. The entity was a mass of multiple high-tier crawlers that had grown together over years until they shared a single oversized core. When Amon entered the chamber the mass tried to crush him under successive waves of living flesh and armored plates.
He cut the core out of the center of the mass and watched the entire structure collapse inward on itself. Secondary limbs continued to twitch for several seconds after the controlling will vanished. Then they too went still and did not move again.
Amon continued deeper without resting.
The second and third cores required greater applications of force. Each one fed the ongoing refinement a little further. By the time he reached the final chamber of the complex his body had crossed another clear threshold. Speed and power that had felt exceptional an hour earlier now registered as the natural state of his existence rather than an elevated condition.
The last entity of the network was the oldest. Parts of it had fused so thoroughly with the tunnel walls that it was difficult to determine where the creature ended and the stone began. Multiple secondary cores glowed along its length like dull red stars. When it sensed Amonโs final approach it attempted to collapse the entire section of tunnel on top of him in one catastrophic structural failure.
Amon drove Azrael through the primary core before the ceiling finished its fall.
The collapse continued around him and then stopped the moment the controlling presence disappeared. Dust and broken stone settled across the ruined chamber. Black blood seeped from the ruptured cores and pooled slowly in the cracks of the floor.
Amon stood in the center of the destruction and felt the last echoes of the network fade into complete nothing.
The second dens complex was finished.
He turned and began the climb back toward the surface.
Outside the night was deep and absolute. The corrupted lands surrounding the dens no longer contained any living Night Crawlers within the full range of his senses. The silence was total.
Amon adjusted his grip on Azrael and continued walking west.
There were greater concentrations still ahead.
There were older things that had never needed to approach the walls of any human city.
The Silent Night continued to expand without limit.
The long-range arrays detected the second dens complex falling silent just after the midpoint of the night.
Elder Voss stood in the central monitoring chamber of the palace and watched the residual energy readings collapse into the same clean signature that had marked every previous site. The western edge of the detection field showed a continuous path of absence moving further into territories that the arrays could only partially reach.
He sent the updated report to the King without any delay.
The King received it in a private chamber with only the Royal Guard commander and the highest ranking formation master present. The large map on the table had been updated with every confirmed silent zone. The black marks now stretched in a clear unbroken line from the capitalโs eastern wall deep into the corrupted lands that had never been fully mapped.
"It is not slowing," the formation master said. "If anything the intervals between dens are decreasing. Whatever this force is has grown more efficient with every engagement it completes."
The Royal Guard commander studied the map in silence for a long moment before speaking.
"We should consider the real possibility that it will not stop at the outer dens," he said. "If the pattern continues without interruption it will eventually reach the deeper concentrations that even our oldest records only mention in fragmented references. Those populations are larger. Older. Far more dangerous. If something can erase them with the same efficiency it has shown so far then the balance of power across the entire region changes in ways we are not prepared to face."
The King looked at the western edge of the map where the marks ended simply because the arrays could no longer extend their reach.
"Prepare a second scouting force," he said. "Smaller. Faster. Their only task is to confirm the state of the next dens and return with whatever information they can gather while still alive. They are not to engage anything they find under any circumstances."
He paused and then continued in the same quiet voice.
"Begin quiet preparations for a possible full evacuation of the outer districts. I do not want panic in the streets. I want options available if the situation demands them."
Both men bowed and left the chamber to carry out the orders.
In the eastern districts the fear had already settled into something solid and difficult to dislodge. People gathered in small tight groups near the barrier light and spoke in voices that rarely rose above whispers about the empty plains and the missing Night Crawler cries that had formed the background of every night for as long as the city had existed. Soldiers on the walls answered questions with silence or short official statements that satisfied no one who heard them. Children were kept indoors after the sun left the sky. Merchants closed their stalls while light still remained. The usual night traffic of the capital thinned until the streets felt abandoned long before the official curfew took effect.
Captain Roland remained at his post on the eastern wall through the entire night that followed the report. He watched the corpse field under the moon and waited for the first sign of movement that never came. The absence of the usual distant screeches felt louder and heavier than any assault he had faced across thirty years of continuous service on these walls.
He rested both hands on the cold stone and thought about the path of destruction that continued west without a single break. He thought about the clean identical cuts and the cores crushed from within and the complete lack of any human remains among the tens of thousands of dead crawlers that stretched to the horizon.
Something had walked past the capital while the city slept.
Something that did not require an army to achieve results that armies could never match.
Something that left only silence in its wake.
Roland stared into the dark beyond the barrier light and did not look away for a long time.
Far beyond the reach of that light the same silence continued to spread without pause or mercy.
Amon stood on a high ridge that overlooked the third and largest dens concentration he had found since leaving the capital.
The land here was broken on a scale greater than anything closer to the human walls. Entire sections of ground had collapsed into deep sinkholes that glowed with faint internal light from the corrupted minerals far below. The air tasted of metal and old blood. The presence that radiated from the dens was no longer a single dominant will. It was a layered network of multiple high-tier entities sharing awareness and intent across kilometers of interconnected tunnels.
He had already killed every crawler that attempted to leave the dens and intercept him during the approach.
The ridge remained quiet under the deep night sky.
Azrael rested against his shoulder. The blade had continued to change with every dens he cleared. The edge held a deeper and more complete darkness now. The weight felt like a natural extension of his own arm rather than a separate weapon he needed to control. Each core it destroyed left a faint residue that the blade absorbed without effort or visible reaction.
Amon looked down at the dens and felt the network register his presence in return.
They were preparing every force they still possessed.
He began walking down the slope toward the main openings.
The first wave met him at the base of the ridge. Hundreds of mid and high-tier crawlers poured from every visible tunnel mouth at the same moment. They moved with a coordination that approached genuine strategy. Some carried crude weapons formed from their own carapace and reinforced bone. Others released clouds of corrosive mist that ate into stone and would have eaten into ordinary metal just as quickly. Pack leaders directed the overall flow while the connected entities deeper below adjusted pressure and timing in real time.
Amon entered the wave the same way he had entered every previous force since the night began.
Azrael moved in continuous arcs of black light that never fully ceased. The front ranks ceased to exist as coherent bodies. Limbs and cores and black fluid separated in clean lines and fell. Amon stepped through the gaps without any reduction in pace. The crawlers behind the first ranks tried to close around him from multiple directions. They failed. Every adjustment they made was met by a response that arrived faster than their shared instincts could complete the decision to change course.
He reached the main entrance of the central dens without having taken a single wound that mattered.
