The room was dim, lit only by the soft glow of the moon filtering through the curtains. Nero lay on his back, his chest rising and falling with the slow rhythm of sleep. Khione was curled against him, her head on his shoulder, her white hair spread across his arm like spilled moonlight. She had been asleep for hours, her body finally at rest after the intensity of the night.

Then her eyes opened.

She did not move at first. She simply lay there, listening to the steady beat of his heart beneath her ear, feeling the warmth of his body against hers. His arm was wrapped around her waist, his hand resting on her hip. His breathing was deep, even, peaceful.

She tilted her head and looked at his face. In sleep, the lines of tension that usually marked his features were softened. He looked younger, unguarded, vulnerable. A strand of dark blue hair had fallen across his forehead. She reached up and brushed it aside, her fingers lingering on his skin.

His face was handsome in the moonlight, the strong jaw, the straight nose, the lips that had kissed her so many times she had lost count. She traced the line of his cheek, the curve of his ear, the arch of his brow.

He was hers. And she was his.

She had always known she would give herself fully to the man she loved, but she had never imagined it would feel like this—like falling into a warm ocean, like finding shelter in a storm, like coming home after a long, cold journey. She had never imagined she would be so completely, utterly, irrevocably devoted to another person.

But she was. And it was the most natural thing in the world.

"I love you," she whispered.

The words came easily now, flowing from her heart without hesitation. They were not just words. They were a promise. A vow. A declaration that encompassed everything she was and everything she would ever be.

"That means I would defend you with my life, even if the odds were insurmountable," she continued, her voice soft but steady. "It means I will comfort you in the difficult and painful times. It means I will dance and rejoice with you when times are good. It means I will never betray you, never give up on you."

She paused, her hand resting on his cheek. His skin was warm beneath her palm. He did not stir.

"It means finding my fire when you, my loved one, is threatened, yet never waging war—only doing what is necessary for a noble defense. Love says I forgive you when you err. Love says though life may test me, I am yours into eternity, and I will never abandon you."

Her voice grew stronger, more resolute.

"It means I will never put you in danger, no matter how noble the ’cause’ may be. Love means protecting the earth, protecting humanity, being kind to animals. But should anyone demand your life to save their own, I will tell them to rot in hell."

She smiled, a soft, fierce smile that only he ever saw.

"There can never be a higher calling to me than protecting and caring for those I love. Love is not a concept for sheep, for sheep run at the first sign of fear. It is a concept for lions. So be brave, my love. And know that I am here."

She leaned in and pressed a kiss to his forehead, soft and lingering. Then she settled back against him, her head on his shoulder, her arm draped across his chest.

"Forever," she whispered into the darkness. "I am yours forever."

Nero stirred slightly, his arm tightening around her, pulling her closer. A soft sound escaped his lips, not quite a word, but a murmur of contentment.

Khione closed her eyes and let the warmth of his embrace carry her back to sleep. She dreamed of nothing but him.

The morning light crept through the curtains, soft and golden, painting the room in warm hues. Khione stirred first, her eyes fluttering open to find Nero still asleep beside her. His arm was wrapped around her waist, his face relaxed, his breathing slow and steady. She watched him for a moment, a small smile playing on her lips, then reached out and gently traced the line of his jaw.

He stirred, his eyes opening, and met her gaze. For a moment, there was only the quiet intimacy of the morning—the soft light, the warmth of the blankets, the comfort of being together.

"Good morning," she said.

"Good morning," he replied, his voice rough with sleep.

They lay together for a while longer, not speaking, simply enjoying the peace. Then, reluctantly, they rose. The day was waiting, and there was much to do.

They moved to the small kitchenette, working side by side in comfortable silence. Nero cracked eggs into a bowl, whisking them with practiced ease. Khione sliced bread and arranged fruit on a plate. The scent of cooking filled the room, warm and inviting.

They ate at the small table by the window, the morning sun streaming in. The food was simple, but it tasted good, made better by the company. They exchanged few words, their eyes meeting over the table, small smiles passing between them.

After breakfast, they took a bath together, the water hot and soothing. They washed away the last traces of sleep, their movements unhurried. He washed her hair, his fingers gentle, and she returned the favor, her hands firm and sure. There was no rush, no urgency. Just the quiet pleasure of sharing space.

When they were clean and dressed, they packed their belongings. The room was tidy, the bed made, the dishes washed and put away. They left the key on the small table and walked out into the morning.

The city was already awake, the streets filled with merchants, travelers, and early risers. They walked to the train station, their steps light, their hands intertwined. The super train waited on the platform, sleek and silent, its doors open.

They boarded and found seats by the window. The train began to move, the city sliding away, replaced by green fields and distant mountains. Khione leaned her head on Nero’s shoulder, and he wrapped his arm around her.

The journey passed in comfortable silence. She dozed lightly, her breathing slow and even. He watched the landscape blur by, his mind at ease. There were no battles to fight, no enemies to face. Just the quiet rhythm of the train and the warmth of her presence.

When the academy city came into view, she stirred, sitting up and looking out the window. The spires and towers rose against the sky, familiar and welcoming.

"We’re back," she said.

"We’re back," he agreed.

The train slowed, gliding into the station. They gathered their belongings and stepped onto the platform. The air was cool and clean, the sounds of the academy familiar and comforting.

They walked through the gates, past the gardens, past the training grounds. The festival decorations were still up, the banners fluttering in the breeze. The academy was alive with activity—cadets hurrying to classes, instructors calling out orders, the distant clang of swords.

Nero and Khione walked toward the dorms, their steps unhurried. The mission was complete.

At the same time, Azariah was calling Elysia, pressuring her about result.
