Primordial Slime: I Devour The World

Chapter 29: The Great One Commands

The battle was no longer a clash.

It was a pattern.

Tanaka felt it through Mana Sense before he fully understood it with his mind.

The humans were strong.

Very strong.

But strength alone did not matter when the ground, the trees, the rabbits, the wolves, and the slimes all moved as one living shape around you.

Tanaka compressed himself low to the soil and sent a pulse through Thought Communication.

Left flank, hold.

The wolves on the left broke into a wider arc without hesitation.

Front line, rotate.

The veteran slimes immediately replaced the wounded one at the center.

Rabbits, move the injured back.

Three rabbits darted in at once, dragging a slime away from a spear strike and vanishing behind a root cluster.

The humans were still trying to force their way forward.

That mistake cost them every time.

The adventurer with the wind bursts tried to open a path through the middle.

Tanaka felt the mana gather.

Before the spell finished forming, he snapped a thought outward.

Alpha, now.

The Alpha Wolf lunged through the trees and slammed into the caster’s side.

The wind burst exploded harmlessly into the canopy.

The caster stumbled.

A second later, two slimes hit him from the front.

He went down hard.

The rest of the humans adjusted quickly, but the rhythm had already shifted.

Tanaka could feel it.

They were reacting.

The village was deciding.

That difference mattered.

A spear came for Tanaka’s side.

He twisted, let it graze him, and swallowed the mana riding inside the thrust.

The pain was sharp.

The reward was sharper.

Tanaka blinked.

Good.

No time to dwell.

A second spear came from the right.

He snapped a message into the battle network.

Little one, behind you!

The little slime reacted instantly, flattening itself as the spear passed overhead.

A wolf intercepted the man who had thrown it.

The human cursed and backed up.

Tanaka was already moving.

Leap.

Earth Impact.

The human slammed into a tree and slid down the bark with a grunt, stunned rather than broken.

Tanaka did not pursue the easy target.

The cave entrance was behind him.

The village was behind him.

Every command he sent had one purpose now.

Protect the heart.

The humans were beginning to understand that too.

The bearded hunter cut across the clearing, sword raised, and shouted to his team.

"Stop chasing the border! Push the center!"

Tanaka felt the shift immediately.

The adventurers were no longer trying to break the village line.

They were aiming for him.

Smart.

Dangerous.

He narrowed his body and sent a thought to the defenders.

Do not let them reach the cave.

The wolves answered first.

They surged from both sides and forced the humans into a tighter space.

The rabbits began dragging stones into the path, turning open ground into a maze of obstacles.

The slimes used the uneven terrain to bounce in from blind angles.

One human tried to leap over the clutter.

A veteran slime met him in the air and knocked him sideways.

He crashed into a tree and lost his weapon.

Tanaka kept moving.

Every time he looked up, another piece of the field had changed.

A wounded slime had been pulled away.

A rabbit had brought herbs.

A wolf had taken a strike intended for the front line and kept fighting.

No one stopped.

No one asked for praise.

They simply kept their place.

Tanaka felt something inside him tighten.

The village was not just following.

It believed.

That belief flowed into his mana like heat.

His thoughts sharpened.

His commands became easier to send.

Clearer.

Faster.

More natural.

For a moment, he understood something unsettling.

He was not merely leading them.

He was becoming the shape they had all begun to trust.

A steel strike came down from above.

Tanaka barely blocked in time, body flattening under the impact.

The force shoved him half a meter into the dirt.

The bearded hunter stood over him, sword trembling slightly from the contact.

His expression had changed from confidence to focus.

"Your whole settlement bends around you," the man said.

Tanaka did not answer.

He simply compressed his body and blasted upward with Leap.

The hunter anticipated it and stepped back.

Tanaka’s body hit nothing but air.

Yet that was the point.

He had not attacked the leader.

He had drawn him a step farther from the cave.

A wolf snapped into the gap behind the bearded hunter and forced him to turn.

A slime crashed into his shield arm.

A rabbit darted past and carried away the broken edge of one of the cave-bound herbs so it would not get trampled.

Even in battle, the village was still protecting its own.

The bearded hunter noticed.

His eye narrowed.

"Insane."

He swung hard.

Tanaka absorbed part of the blade’s mana and skidded back, but the pressure still tore through his body.

His form rippled, then repaired.

He was starting to feel the strain.

The same was true of the humans.

Breathing harder now, the adventurers were no longer moving in clean formation. The wolves had dragged them into rough terrain. The rabbits kept making the ground worse. The slimes never gave them the chance to settle.

The bearded hunter barked an order.

"Break the beast in the back!"

The humans adjusted instantly, trying to create a path toward the little slime, which had been unusually bold all fight, bouncing in and out of danger to help wounded allies.

Tanaka saw the change.

His core went cold.

No.

Little one, fall back.

The little slime was already moving.

Too late.

A shield slammed toward it from the side.

Tanaka launched himself between them, absorbing the impact, but the hunter behind the shield was already drawing a blade.

Not toward Tanaka.

Toward the little slime.

Tanaka’s thoughts snapped into a single straight line.

No.

Devourer opened wider than before.

The mana in the attacker’s weapon disappeared as the blade bit into Tanaka’s body.

The human faltered.

Tanaka used the opening to strike with Earth Impact, driving him backward into the root barrier the rabbits had built.

The man fell, dazed.

But the others were still coming.

The little slime bounced to Tanaka’s side, trembling, then immediately turned toward another wounded wolf and shoved it out of a spear’s path.

Tanaka felt the little one’s emotion through their bond.

Fear.

Determination.

Trust.

That trust hit harder than the human blade.

Tanaka sent out a pulse so strong it nearly shook his own core.

All units, tighten formation!

The wolves closed in.

The slimes locked the front.

The rabbits moved the wounded out and came back with fresh stones and herb bundles as if they had done this their entire lives.

The humans found themselves boxed in.

Not surrounded.

Managed.

The bearded hunter noticed it too.

His jaw tightened.

He looked from the wolves to the rabbits to the slimes and finally to Tanaka, whose body had taken too many cuts, too many impacts, too many near misses.

And still...

The village was holding.

The leader’s voice turned low.

"This is impossible."

Tanaka felt it before the man stepped back.

The humans were losing ground.

Not fast.

But steadily.

Every retreat they made was one the village immediately filled.

Every opening they tried to create was closed by another race.

The battlefield had become a machine.

A living one.

And at its center was a slime no one had believed could ever command anything.

Tanaka sent the next thought clearly, almost instinctively.

Push them out.

The wolves surged.

The slimes struck.

The rabbits cut off the retreat paths by kicking loose roots and stone piles into place.

The adventurers were forced toward the far edge of the clearing.

The bearded hunter cursed under his breath.

He was still strong.

Still dangerous.

But the momentum had changed.

Tanaka knew it.

The village knew it.

Even the humans knew it.

Then, for the first time, the bearded hunter made the mistake of looking away from Tanaka.

Just once.

Toward the little slime.

It had been helping a wounded veteran slime back toward safety.

The leader’s expression sharpened.

In that instant, Tanaka understood what the human was thinking.

A desperate move.

A final strike.

Tanaka’s core tightened.

Little one, move!

But the human had already started his attack.
