Primordial Slime: I Devour The World

Chapter 30: The First Human He Killed

Sponsored

The bearded hunter lunged.

Tanaka moved at the same time.

Thoughts flashed through him in a violent instant.

Too far.

Too fast.

Too close.

The little slime was still in the path.

No time to shout.

No time to warn.

Only movement.

Tanaka hurled himself forward with every ounce of mana left in his body.

Leap.

His body slammed into the human’s sword arm before the blade could fall.

The hunter staggered, surprised more than injured.

Earth Impact!

The blow caught the hunter in the chest.

Leather armor cracked.

The man was thrown backward half a step, but not enough. He struck heavily again.

Tanaka compressed his body and threw himself across the man swallowing the force of the attack with Devourer as the steel bit into his side.

Pain exploded through him.

Mana vanished into the darkness inside his core.

The blade slowed.

The hunter’s eyes widened.

For a split second, he was forced to look at the slime he had failed to kill.

Tanaka used that opening.

He wrapped his body around the hunter’s wrist.

The man tried to pull free.

Could not.

Tanaka crushed forward with all his remaining force, dragging the weapon away from the little slime.

The wolf beside them lunged and bit into the hunter’s leg.

The man cursed and twisted.

The little slime saw the opening.

It bounced forward.

Not to attack.

To help.

It slammed into the hunter’s ankle with everything it had.

The hunter stumbled.

Tanaka felt the village around him.

The wolves closing in.

The slimes pushing the other humans back.

The rabbits dragging injured away.

The humans were being forced out.

But this one.

This one had come too close.

The bearded hunter tried to recover, but Tanaka was already moving again.

Another Leap.

Another Earth Impact.

The man blocked this time, boots digging into the dirt.

His face had changed.

No longer confident.

Now strained.

Focused.

Dangerous.

He slashed wildly.

Tanaka dodged one.

Took the next across his side.

The attack ripped through him, but Devourer stripped the mana from the edge before the full force could spread.

Tanaka hit back.

Again.

Again.

The little slime darted behind the hunter and rammed him from the back of the knee.

A wolf snapped from the side.

A slime struck from the front.

The human finally lost balance.

He dropped to one knee.

His sword plunged into the ground to keep him upright.

Tanaka saw his chance.

He did not hesitate.

He slammed his body directly into the man’s chest.

BOOM!

The hunter was thrown backward into the clearing, rolling once across the earth before skidding to a stop.

For the first time, he looked shaken.

The other humans were already retreating under pressure from the wolves and slimes.

The adventurer with the wind bursts had a cut across his cheek.

The bowwoman had been forced away from her line twice.

The youngest hunter was bleeding from one arm and backing toward the tree line with obvious panic now in his face.

The village had them.

Tanaka kept his gaze on the bearded hunter.

The man rose slowly, one hand on his sword.

He shifted his stance.

Mana gathered around the blade.

Tanaka felt it immediately.

A last strike.

A desperate one.

The hunter was going for his biggest attack because he knew he could not break through Tanaka cleanly anymore.

Tanaka’s core screamed a warning.

Tanaka saw the sword light up.

His body moved before thought finished forming.

He intercepted the blow.

The blade cut through his side.

Devourer tore the mana from the strike.

Tanaka’s body split, then compressed, then reformed all in one violent motion.

The hunter’s eyes widened.

Tanaka did not stop.

He gathered the last of his power into his core.

There was no elegant opening left.

No perfect angle.

No clean victory.

Only fury and fear and the terrible certainty that if he failed now, everyone would die.

Tanaka lunged forward and drove himself directly into the human’s chest with all the force he had left.

Earth Impact!

The impact landed under the sternum.

The hunter’s breath left him in one sharp burst.

His sword slipped from his hand.

He staggered.

Tanaka struck again.

And again.

The human fell backward into the dirt, one arm twitching uselessly at his side.

Not dead.

Still breathing.

Tanaka stared.

The bearded hunter looked up at him, dazed and pale.

There was a flicker of shock on his face.

Then pain.

Then something else.

Not hatred.

Understanding.

A tiny sound escaped him.

A broken exhale.

His hand moved weakly toward his satchel.

Tanaka did not know why.

Did not care.

The man’s sword was still on the ground.

The humans were still not gone.

The hunter tried to rise.

Tanaka compressed himself once more.

The little slime suddenly rushed back toward him, but another adventurer shouted and rushed in to cover the fallen leader.

Too late.

Tanaka crossed the distance in a single motion and slammed into the standing adventurer’s shoulder.

The man dropped his guard.

The bearded hunter, still on the ground, grabbed for the blade.

Tanaka saw it.

If he reached the sword, he would strike again.

No time.

No second warning.

Tanaka’s entire body hardened.

Mana gathered.

Devourer opened inside him like a starving void.

He drove forward.

Not against armor.

Against the man himself.

The impact stunned him long enough for the little slime to get clear.

Then the hunter’s chest hit Tanaka’s body, and the slime’s core triggered the only response left.

Devour.

The man froze.

His body went slack.

Not because of pain.

Because the mana holding his life and strength was being stripped away, pulled inward, swallowed into the darkness within Tanaka’s core.

The hunter’s eyes widened.

His mouth opened.

For the first time, he looked truly afraid.

Then the world inside Tanaka shattered open.

Not light.

Not power.

Memory.

Fragments hit him all at once.

A little house.

A mother’s voice.

A younger version of the bearded hunter, running through a dirt yard with a wooden stick for a sword.

Rain on a roof.

A scar received in training.

A woman laughing near a market stall.

A child waiting at a door.

A promise.

A fear of leaving home and never coming back.

A final regret.

Not for dying.

For not returning.

Tanaka staggered.

The memories were not his.

They crashed into his mind anyway, heavy and raw and full of ordinary human life.

He saw the man as a boy.

As a son.

As someone’s friend.

Someone’s husband.

Someone who had once carried food home with sore hands and still smiled anyway.

Tanaka reeled backward.

The body beneath him went limp.

The hunter was gone.

Not with a roar.

Not with ceremony.

Just... gone.

The silence that followed was unbearable.

The surviving humans saw it.

The bearded hunter had disappeared from the fight.

Not from retreat.

From the battlefield itself.

The adventurers froze.

The bowwoman’s eyes widened.

The youngest hunter stumbled back in horror.

"Captain...?"

The words were enough.

Enough for them to understand that whatever had happened here, it had crossed a line none of them wanted to face next.

The wolves came at them hard.

The slimes surged.

The rabbits dragged the wounded deeper into safety.

The humans broke.

Not all at once.

First the bowwoman backed away, pale and breathing hard.

Then the youngest hunter dropped his spear.

Then the adventurer with the wind burst turned and ran.

The bearded hunter’s death, or whatever they believed it to be, had shattered the last of their confidence.

One by one, they withdrew into the forest.

Not victorious.

Not even orderly.

Just fleeing.

The clearing fell into silence again.

Tanaka remained still.

His body trembled violently.

The memory fragments still burned behind his thoughts.

A home.

A family.

A human life that had been full of small things and quiet love.

He had not expected that.

He had expected a monster.

An enemy.

A shape that could be swallowed without consequence.

Instead...

He had eaten a person.

His core churned violently.

The little slime bounced toward him, hesitating only when it felt the strange pressure rolling off his body.

It gently touched his side.

Boing.

Tanaka did not answer.

He could not.

The feeling inside him was too large.

Too human.

Too unbearable.

The wolves stood watch at the forest edge, ensuring the retreat was real.

The rabbits began tending the wounded without being told.

The slimes slowly gathered around Tanaka, their pulses of concern brushing against his own.

He looked at the empty space where the hunter had fallen.

Then at the trail the fleeing humans had left behind.

This was not the end.

He knew that immediately.

The outside world had seen them now.

No amount of hiding would erase that.

Human kingdoms.

Guilds.

Adventurers.

Hunters.

They would return.

Worse, they would come prepared.

Tanaka lowered himself slowly and looked over the village.

The slimes were tired.

The wolves were wounded.

The rabbits were exhausted.

But they were alive.

All of them.

That mattered more than victory.

He looked at the little slime.

Still here.

Still bouncing.

Still brave.

His chest tightened again.

Not with anger this time.

With something quieter.

A promise.

He had not protected everyone perfectly.

He had not stopped the world from reaching them.

But he had stopped this attack.

And next time...

He would be stronger.

Far stronger.

The wounded humans disappeared into the forest.

By the time they reached the Guild, their report had changed shape entirely.

It no longer described a strange nest.

No longer even described a territory.

It described something far more dangerous.

An intelligent monster settlement.

An organized one.

A village with wolves.

A village with rabbits.

A village with slimes that fought as one.

And at its center...

A nameless slime that had killed a human and never once looked away.

That night, the village slept in uneasy peace.

Tanaka stayed awake longer than the others.

He sat at the edge of the cave and watched the forest until darkness swallowed everything beyond the trees.

The little slime settled beside him.

The wolves guarded the perimeter.

The rabbits slept near the herb stores.

The slimes rested in small clusters around the cave.

No one said anything.

They did not need to.

Tanaka looked over all of them and finally understood.

The world outside would never ignore them again.

And neither would he.
