Chapter 102 — Breaking Point
The shape tore fully free of the crystallized earth in a shower of shattered stone, and Arlen felt his chest go cold at the sight of it — larger than anything they’d faced across two days of escalating combat, its form blurring and shifting at the edges in the same wrong, unnatural way as every corrupted creature before it, but scaled up to something that dwarfed even the Broodmother’s massive bulk.
"Guardian!" Ilyana shouted, already pivoting toward it. "The real one — everything else was just probing our defenses!"
"Protect Sister Ashwood!" Garrick roared, already moving to intercept the creature’s path toward Maren’s kneeling, unbroken concentration.
Osric, his earlier wards spent, tore into a fresh casting with desperate urgency, a wall of shimmering force erupting between the guardian and Maren’s position, buying precious seconds even as the strain of it visibly cost him.
"That won’t hold long!" he shouted. "Someone needs to actually hurt this thing!"
"And better do it fast"he shouted again
Selene, her reserves partially recovered, unleashed a lance of concentrated ice toward the creature’s flank, and when it merely staggered rather than fell, she shifted immediately into a different casting — a rolling wave of pale fire that caught along the guardian’s blurred edges, burning with a strange, cold intensity Arlen had never seen from elemental magic before.
"Frostfire," she called, breathless. "Should slow its regeneration, if it has any!"
Kess darted low, acid-touched claws raking across one of the creature’s massive limbs, and Rurik followed immediately after, his feral Aura driving a strike with enough raw force to visibly crack the crystallized plating along its side.
The guardian retaliated with a sweeping limb that caught Rurik mid-strike, sending him tumbling hard across the clearing floor, and Kaelis darted in immediately to cover the opening, twin blades flashing in a desperate, precise sequence that opened a second wound alongside Kess’s earlier strike.
"Osric, offense now, wards later!" Ilyana called, driving her frost-wreathed blade into the same weakening section. "We can’t out-defend this thing!"
Osric abandoned his shielding casting and shifted immediately into something considerably more aggressive — chains of crackling lightning arcing from his outstretched hands, striking the guardian in rapid, staccato bursts that made its already-unstable form shudder and blur more violently with each impact.
"It’s working!" Doran shouted, planting his shield to absorb a retaliatory strike aimed at Osric’s now-undefended position. "Keep at it!"
Arlen fought at the fringe of the engagement, Halvard beside him, both of them working to intercept the smaller creatures still emerging from the crystallized ground rather than adding directly to the assault on the guardian itself — someone needed to keep the perimeter from collapsing entirely while the primary team focused everything on the larger threat.
"Third front holding!" Halvard called, driving his blade through another twisted shape. "Barely!"
Grennig, wound reopened and bleeding freely now despite Priya’s earlier attention, planted his shield directly in the guardian’s path as it lunged toward Osric, absorbing the full weight of the strike with a grunt of genuine, agonized effort.
"Grennig!" Aria’s voice cut through the chaos, sharp with alarm.
"Still standing!" he shouted back, though his voice carried a strain that suggested the claim wouldn’t hold much longer.
Selene unleashed another casting, this one a spinning vortex of wind and ice that tore across the guardian’s already-weakened flank, and the creature shrieked, a sound that carried genuine agony rather than the mechanical, unnatural quality of its smaller counterparts.
"It can actually be hurt properly!" Ilyana called, renewed urgency in her voice. "Concentrate everything on that same section!"
Osric’s lightning struck again, chained directly into the wound Selene’s vortex had opened, and Kess pressed forward once more, acid-touched claws driving deep into the same weakening point despite the guardian’s increasingly desperate, flailing retaliation.
Arlen, glancing toward Maren’s position through a brief gap in the fighting, saw the golden light pulsing faster now, brighter, and understood with a cold, sinking certainty that the purification and the fight against the guardian had become inseparably linked — whichever concluded first would likely determine the outcome of both.
"Formation’s failing on the eastern edge!" Halvard shouted, and Arlen turned to find a fresh wave of smaller creatures pressing through a gap that had opened while everyone’s attention concentrated on the guardian.
"With me!" Arlen called, already moving, Storm Step carrying him to intercept before the gap could widen further.
They fought desperately to hold the perimeter, and Arlen felt his reserves finally, genuinely beginning to fail him — Enduring Vitality straining against accumulated exhaustion that no amount of trained discipline could fully overcome, his movements growing marginally slower with every passing minute.
A cry went up from the guardian’s engagement, and Arlen turned in time to see Doran driven hard to the ground, his shield arm bent at an angle that spoke of serious, genuine injury, Aria already scrambling toward him even as Selene’s magic faltered mid-casting, her own reserves finally, completely spent.
"Selene’s down!" Kaelis shouted. "Doran’s hurt bad!"
Osric’s lightning came slower now, his own exhaustion evident in every labored gesture, and the guardian, sensing the shift, surged forward with renewed, desperate ferocity toward the weakened section of the line.
"We’re losing ground!" Ilyana called, her composed authority finally cracking under the accumulated weight of the fight. "Garrick — I need you!"
Garrick, who had spent the engagement holding a critical section alongside Grennig’s stubborn, bleeding defense, turned toward the guardian’s renewed advance with an expression Arlen had never seen from him before — not fear, exactly, but a kind of grim, absolute clarity that settled over his weathered features like something finally, fully decided.
"Hold what you can," he said, his voice carrying clearly even through the chaos. "I’ll handle this."
He moved toward the guardian, and Arlen, catching sight of it even through his own desperate fighting at the perimeter, felt something shift in the air around the Guild Master — a gathering weight, a pressure that made the very ground beneath everyone’s feet seem to still in anticipation of whatever came next.
