Chapter 101 — The Tide Turns Against Them

The golden light’s sudden pulse drew a fresh wave of creatures from the crystallized ground, more than any previous surge, and Arlen understood, watching the corrupted forms multiply faster than the party could reasonably clear them, that Maren’s progress was provoking an escalating, desperate response rather than a diminishing one.

"She’s close!" Osric shouted, maintaining his shifting wards even as the strain of sustained casting showed plainly across his weathered features. "Whatever’s left down there, it knows it too!"

"Then we hold!" Ilyana called, her frost-wreathed blade cutting through two creatures in a single, fluid arc before she pivoted to meet a third. "However long it takes!"

Arlen fought alongside Halvard at what had become the formation’s most contested stretch, the secondary line no longer secondary in any meaningful sense, simply another front in a battle that had stopped respecting the careful structure Ilyana’s original plan had established.

"Left!" Halvard shouted, and Arlen spun in time to catch a creature’s strike on Aura Ward, the impact still driving him back several stumbling steps despite the technique’s absorption.

Selene’s magic flared again nearby, ice lancing through a cluster of the twisted forms, but Arlen caught, in the fragment of attention he could spare, the way her movements had grown visibly slower — the accumulated toll of sustained, repeated casting finally beginning to show.

"Selene’s flagging!" Doran called, planting himself more firmly at her flank, shield absorbing strikes meant for her exposed position.

"So is everyone," Kess called back, her acid-touched claws finding another mark even as exhaustion roughened her usually easy voice. "Keep pushing!"

Kaelis moved through the chaos with blurred, desperate speed, his twin blades finding openings that grew narrower with every passing minute, and Arlen watched him take a glancing wound along his forearm that he barely seemed to register, adrenaline apparently carrying him past the pain entirely.

Rurik roared again, Aura surging feral and bristling around him, and tore through a cluster of creatures with raw, exhausted fury, though even his considerable strength showed the accumulating strain of a fight that had long since exceeded any reasonable expectation of quick resolution.

Priya, sheltered near Maren’s working radius, worked frantically between combatants, her restorative magic stretched thin across too many wounds arriving too quickly for any single healer to properly manage.

"I can’t keep pace!" she called, genuine alarm cutting through her usual steady focus. "Grennig needs proper attention, not just enough to keep him upright!"

Grennig, still fighting despite his earlier wound reopening somewhere in the chaos, waved off the concern with grim, stubborn determination. "Later. Hold the line first."

Arlen felt the fight’s mounting desperation settling into his own chest, a cold, familiar clarity that reminded him uncomfortably of Millbrook’s original crisis — the sense of a situation genuinely, dangerously slipping past what careful preparation alone could properly manage.

"Behind you!" he shouted to Halvard, catching a flanking creature through Earthen Grip’s warning vibration a half-second before it would have struck unguarded.

Halvard pivoted just in time, his blade finding the creature’s exposed side, but the reprieve lasted only moments before two more emerged to press the same gap.

"There’s too many," Halvard said, breathless, his usual composed steadiness cracking under the sustained pressure. "We’re not clearing them faster than they’re coming."

Garrick’s voice cut through the chaos, steady despite everything. "Hold formation! Sister Ashwood needs only a little longer!"

Arlen caught sight of the Guild Master fighting near the ring’s most contested section, his blade moving with the same unhurried, economical precision he’d shown throughout, though even his evident skill couldn’t fully stem creatures that seemed to emerge faster than any single fighter, however capable, could reasonably manage alone.

A fourth wave began surfacing even as the party fought to clear the third, and Arlen felt the formation’s careful structure finally, genuinely begin to buckle — gaps opening faster than anyone could close them, the accumulated exhaustion of nearly two full days of sustained combat finally exacting its inevitable cost.

"Ilyana!" Osric shouted, his voice carrying real fear for the first time since Arlen had known him. "My wards are failing — I can’t hold this pace much longer!"

"Then we adapt!" Ilyana called back, though even her composed authority carried a new, unmistakable strain. "Tighten further! Protect Sister Ashwood above all else!"

The party compressed inward, sacrificing ground for concentration, and Arlen found himself pressed close alongside Halvard, Grennig, and Kaelis in a tightening ring around Maren’s still-glowing, still-unbroken concentration, the fighting now close and desperate in a way that left no room for anything beyond raw, immediate survival.

Selene’s magic guttered, a spell collapsing half-formed as her reserves finally, visibly failed her, and Doran threw himself bodily into the gap her faltering casting left exposed, his shield taking a blow that visibly staggered him despite his considerable strength.

"Doran’s hurt!" Aria’s voice cut through the chaos, sharp with genuine alarm, already moving toward him despite the danger.

Arlen fought on, every muscle screaming with accumulated exhaustion, Enduring Vitality straining to keep pace with damage and fatigue that had long since exceeded anything he’d previously endured. He called on Storm Step, closing a critical gap near Priya’s position, and drove Edgeline Strike into the creature threatening her exposed flank with everything his depleted reserves still allowed.

"Thank you," Priya gasped, already turning back to Doran’s more serious wound.

The golden light at the clearing’s heart pulsed again, brighter still, and Arlen understood, even amid the fight’s mounting chaos, that Maren’s work was reaching some critical, decisive threshold — close to completion, or close to catastrophic failure, with no clear way to tell which from where he stood.

"How much longer?" Garrick shouted toward Maren’s position, his own voice carrying, for the first time, genuine strain.

"Almost," Maren managed, her voice tight with effort, sweat streaking down a face locked in absolute, unbroken concentration despite the chaos surrounding her. "Almost—"

The ground beneath the clearing’s center shuddered violently, and a shape considerably larger than anything the party had yet faced began tearing itself free from the crystallized earth directly behind Maren’s kneeling form, and Arlen felt every careful, disciplined thought in his mind narrow into a single, desperate realization.

"Something’s coming through!" he shouted, already moving. "Behind her — something big!"
