122 One Mountain How Many Lives

As Akira waited for Elena and the others to return with Sarah, Akira's information terminal received a call request from Carol. Looks like Elena contacted Sarah, too.

When Akira manipulates the information terminal to accept the call request, she hears Carol in a good mood.

"Akira, this one's good. I'll tell you more about the request later, but Akira's been working hard to satisfy herself."

"Right."

Carol listens to Akira, who seems somewhat less interested, and speaks in a slightly enhanced tone as she tells Akira.

"... I negotiated well so that Elena and I could be satisfied. If you think it's a lie, ask Elena later."

I'm not doubting Carol. Akira thanks her with a little wonder.

…… No, I don't doubt anything. Thanks for your help. "

"You're welcome. We'll be waiting for you at the hunter's office outpost, so come here with Sarah."

"Okay. I'll be right there."

Akira hangs up the call and goes back to the car. Sarah had been told the same thing by Elena, and Akira went with Sarah to Elena and the others.

Carol was looking at an information terminal with a slightly more difficult look on her face and a broken call with Akira. Conceive while rebuffing (soldering) an earlier conversation with Akira. I could confirm that I had earned Akira's liking. That in itself is exactly what Carol expected and a delightful development that means Akira's cage (candle) has gone one step further.

However, Akira's reaction during the conversation was very different before and after she tangled Elena on the subject. More strictly, Akira had shown a stronger interest in Elena's interests than in her own. At least that's what Carol decided from Akira's attitude.

(Elena seems very admired by Akira. Some of the stories I heard from Sikarabe seemed to Elena that much like Akira... I knew I had to ask Akira or Elena. But I don't think Akira understands that she will be misdemonized, or Akira herself. Then……)

Carol looks at Elena on the side. As for Carol, it's more convenient for a man to ask a lot of questions, but he won't have a choice at this time. The question is whether we have time for that. Akira and the others come straight here. You should be careful what you waste during the operation. I don't know if I can get time to talk to Elena and the others after the operation.

(… to the extent that you can think about your future relationship, would you be helpful? The place we're going to be heading is Serantalville. Where we decided we needed to send a good hunter who had a successful bounty neck crusade. Even though there are outward circumstances, some edge will spin because they go together where the Kugamayama city's countermeasure team so decides)

Carol thinks so and remembers when she was dying in Serantalville.

(For now, I have to go home alive)

Hunter operations are operations that exchange their lives for gold. Still, I want to choose where and how to die. Carol checked once now where she was going to go and tightened her mind strongly.

Akira and the others are on their way to the Serantaru building to make a city section of the ruins of Mihazono Street. The hunter's office unit is advancing to a controlled location, making it safe to get to the building.

Akira received a detailed explanation of the request from the rendezvous Elena and the others. Akira and the others' main task is to investigate the situation inside the building before the main unit being braided enters the Serantar building.

The formation of Akira and the others has not changed since this morning. There are six of them: Akira, Carol, Elena, Sarah, Shikarabe and Togami. The change is about the captain turning into Sikarabe.

However, this is on paper to maintain the decency that it was a request from Via Drancam. We tried to align the Tankrantula Crusade Team, but because Parga and Yamanobe were unable to participate due to various circumstances, we took the form of a replacement.

The actual commander of the unit remains Elena. It also convinces the Drancam side through Arabe, where Sikarabe is the executive of Drancam.

This means Elena has full powers in the actions of Akira and the others in the Serantaru building. In other words, you can't withdraw from the Selantaru building without permission above, etc. Akira and the others can retreat whenever they feel in danger by investigating the inside of the Serantaru building as they please.

Akira was observing the sights around her as she drove her car.

In the vicinity of the road leading to the Serantaru building, debris removal work was underway to expedite the movement of the unit, which was scheduled to be dispatched as soon as braiding was completed. A man-made civil work machine is carrying larger debris to the side of the road. If you are interested in man-made work machines, you may want to watch them for a while. However, Akira's interests were directed at something else.

Akira squeaks with a slightly harsh look.

"... Is this why I didn't encounter a monster this morning when I requested rescue that was empty"

A strong protective wall was laid around the boulevard leading to the Serantalville so that the outside enemy would not block the way. A number of large simple barriers were installed, with tanks and man-made weapons defending it. We can also see those equipped with powerful firearms.

Carol sitting in the passenger seat tells Akira to agree.

"You had fewer monsters from other parts of the world as the surrounding monsters gathered in the Serantalville. Is the perimeter of the building still undergoing large-scale fighting? We're gonna need a successful winning-head crusade."

A tank is aiming the main gun at a large mechanical monster. A shell fired from the main cannon hits the monster directly. A shell explodes inside a mechanical monster, turning the enemy into a new wreck.

A man-made weapon is pointing a giant machine gun at medium-sized mechanical monsters, and it is being washed away with a giant bullet. The impact of countless bullets destroys, crushes, and blows up enemy mechanical parts.

Heavy equipment troopers are shielding simple barriers to wipe out small mechanical monsters. Monsters looming from the shadows of rubble and narrow alleys are also destroying them with care.

Akira looks at the intense fighting in the vicinity and puts her doubts in her face.

"... is this okay?

Carol answers Akira's question, which lacks specifics, with a spare look.

"Maybe it's okay. I don't think there's anything like a front collapsing and monsters blocking our way home while we're investigating the inside of the Selantarville. The city's troops may have done a little hard to secure their way to the Serantaru building, but once they've built up the supply route, they'll have quite a few."

Supplies supporting the fire power of the troops defending the road leading to the Serantaru building are being transported using the road leading to the Serantaru building from the hunter's office outpost on the ruins of Mihazono Street. Unless this supply path is crushed, the hunter's office side will continue to prevail for the time being.

"We should be able to afford to maintain the front even to send the main unit that will come after us into the Serantalville. Unless there's more to it, I don't think the front's gonna collapse while we're investigating the Selantarville."

Mouth what Akira somehow thought when she saw the very powerful looking troops defending the boulevard.

"We don't have to gather hunters and braid the troops, wouldn't it be quick if we sent this unit to Serantalville?

I look at Akira, who seems a little strange, and Carol answers with a bitter smile.

"Well, there's also a reason that tanks and man-made weapons can't control the interior of a building because of size issues, but I guess the primary reason is cost efficiency"

"Cost?"

"Yes. Cost issues. It's cheaper to hire us hunters. Maybe that unit is part of the city's defense force. That trooper must have someone inside the fence. A talent who has been within the fence since birth, highly educated there, and trained enough to fight outside the fence. A lot of money has been spent ever since I was born. How much in the hell would it cost to send such a human being into the current Serantalville in case he let him die? If you have a family, you have to pay a survivor's pension or something, and if you have insurance, you have to pay that. What will be the total amount of the loss? You have no idea."

Seeing Carol speaking with a gentle laugh, Akira exhales lightly and then answers.

"So you're saying it's cheaper to hire us? The reward is too much for us, but it's cheaper than the damage."

"That's the thing. Furthermore, it is for the sake of profitability that Serantarbil is left behind in a certain sense. There are several suspicions of Serantalville involvement in the ruins of Mihazono Street, and there are quite a few dead people out there, probably caused by Serantalville. I think if we destroy the building and make it more ground, it's likely to be safe. But I won't do that. Because if you destroy the building, you will likely never have access to the relics of the old world that will be replenished in the building again. I'm not willing to kill a goose laying golden eggs. Even if the geese become monsters and eat and kill some of the people around them, as long as the gold egg comes with a price to tolerate the damage."

Akira exhales with a complex expression.

"... well, it's worth risking your life to go collect artifacts in the ruins."

Understandable. Convinced to some extent. If the Unified Enterprise Union were to further the ruins of the Old World on account of their dangers, there would be a very massive backlash from those who were getting food from them. But still, it is true that there are things that are not refreshing. That was the look on Akira's face.

Carol laughs and talks.

"If you are uncomfortable with being treated as a mountain of life, do your best to have a high price on your life."

"What exactly am I supposed to do?

"You just have to earn it. This is the east, because we're hunters. If you make plenty of money, as a life that generates so much profit, it's a waste of time to lose, and as the owner of enough power to generate that money, for better or worse, you'll be treated accordingly."

Akira answers with a bitter smile.

"You're so intelligent."

"It's like that in the world. Hunters in particular. Basically, it's a life betting operation, so you're not subject to evaluation to the extent that you've risked your life. On top of that, I need to win the bet and get the money worth the life I bet. The higher the amount of gold you get, the more valuable your life will be. Naturally."

Akira can understand Carol's story, too. Somewhat convincing. But I couldn't be more ambitious than Carol, who laughs and talks like that.

"Really, that's intelligent."

Alpha laughs and talks.

'It's okay. I have my support, and by the time Akira accomplishes my request, Akira will no longer be treated like a mountain. The grievances around here will all be resolved if Akira gets stronger. Leave it to me.'

'... right. I asked for it.

Akira answered that calmly, even though she felt deviated from Alpha's response.

Troops besieging the Serantar building were rolling out a fence along the outer perimeter of areas without other buildings that were spreading circularly around the building. Troops were securely deployed to keep new monsters out of the circle so that they wouldn't let monsters gush out of the building.

As Akira and the others approached the city's troops while in the vehicle, the guard gave instructions to stop (and) with a hand gesture. As Akira and the others pulled over, a guard approached the lead vehicle.

The lead vehicle is a Sicarabe car. Shikarabe is switching to a wilderness specification four-wheel-drive vehicle of the same lineage as Akira and the others, rather than a previous armoured personnel transport vehicle. The vehicle was marked prominently with the mark of Drancam.

Sikarabe tells the man on guard.

"It's the advance team of the Selantarville offensive. Let me through."

"I have been contacted. I'm sorry, but I need you on foot from here. I have a simple protective wall that takes a long time to move around and close. Keep the vehicle in that area."

Sikarabe makes his expression a little more offensive when he hears the man's explanation. The simple protective walls used by Akira and the others at another containment site they passed this morning were of a type that was easy to open and close. At the very least, it will have a more robust deployment of the simplified protective wall with higher performance than there is any clearance through which the vehicle will pass.

"... how creepy (first) is it dangerous if you don't install that type of simple protective wall?

"I don't know. As far as we're concerned, after the control of the Selantar Building, we're going to make the building the second base of the Mihazono City ruins, and we're going to think it's for the defense."

"If we have troops of this size, wouldn't it be quicker to take control of the first floor of the building and secure it?

The guard man answers with a disgusting look.

"Give me a break. I'm sorry to break into a place like sending a bounty neck crusade unit as a repressive unit, even if it's an order from above. That's your job, isn't it? Don't lay around."

They are troops sent by civilian military companies in Kugamayama cities. Not a member of the city's defense forces. I'm not even the kind of hunter who collects artifacts like Akira and the others. Purely dedicated personnel, usually guarding facilities, etc.

The eyes of Akira and the others were filled with feelings that seemed both frightening and foolish to see the inexperienced.

Their senses are right. However, for the sake of its correctness, a large sum of money is needed to develop its correctness (for) long-term safety and to buy its safety (for). Those without money become hunters, and become accustomed to danger in their daily hunter operations, causing their senses to become distorted (yu) and allowing them to become unconsciously more dangerous.

Hunters are such a bunch of lunatics in a way. I guess their senses are that they want to die or be a battle freak who jumped through some of those lunatics, such as the hunters who participate in the bounty neck crusade. Their perception makes no big difference between Akira, Shikarabe and Elena. And that, in the right sense, is right.

Akira and the others, who heard the explanation from Shikarabe, were to head to the Serantalville on foot.

Akira and the others are ready before entering the siege net through a gap in the fence. A man on the guard who was watching those Akira and the others is talking to a colleague.

"... we had two kids mixed up, but they're the ones who succeeded in the bounty neck crusade, right?

"They're from Drancam, aren't they? Look, there's a slightly stronger kid, and he's talking about a successful bounty neck crusade. Maybe that's him."

"Oh, is there such a thing? The one with the expensive gear? You sure look strong. And the other one?

"I don't know. I don't care. I want to go back to the city sooner than that. Why do they have to send us to places like this?

"They plan to come to Cerantalville for whatever the city greats were visiting or negotiating. They want to do something about the building early to make sure it's safe, and they want to take over the building if possible."

"Is this the situation?

"This is the situation. In order not to drive that visit crazy, they dispatched an excessively creepy force to keep your greatness from dying. We're part of it."

"You're an annoying one, though I don't know how great you are. This is the situation with the ruins. Call it off."

"But he was the head of the long-term strategy department, and he must have been a Yanagi Sawa. It must be great enough for me to get by."

"Absolutely, I want you to understand the hardships in the field."

They stayed on guard with zero (spill) stupidity towards the opponent who caused them to be sent to such a place.

Akira and the others who broke into the interior of the siege carefully approach the Serantaru building. Proceed to an area where the remains of mechanical monsters and the bodies of hunters remain scattered. There was nothing like a new monster springing up as soon as they approached the entrance to the building, and Akira and the others went straight into the building.

We arrived in the reception hall on the ground floor of the Serantaru building. Akira looks surprised by the sight of the hall. The hall was unnaturally beautiful. There are definitely bullet marks on walls and ceilings, etc. The debris is also scattered somewhat. But there was a difference between the wreckage of the machine and the body of a man outside.

As Akira and the others explore the hall, Alpha abruptly tells Akira.

"Akira, I'm gonna take my seat off a little bit."

'What?'

'It's okay. I'll be right back. Don't worry, there are no enemies around you.'

That's all Alpha said, he disappeared from Akira's sight.

"Alpha?"

There is no response to Akira's call either. The movement of the fortified clothes is slight but dull. The response of information gathering equipment has been dramatically reduced. It's proof that Alpha's support is lost.

Akira becomes aware of palpitations caused by tension.

(... calm down. He said he had no enemies. He also said he would be back soon. It's okay. Just calm down)

Akira takes a slow, deep breath and tries to ease excessive tension. Be aware of the tension and intentionally alleviate it as much as you need. That's possible for Akira right now.

Elena and the others noticed Akira's condition, but it was cleaned up as a nervousness caused by the fact that she had come back to the Serantalville, where she had previously encountered a cruel (horrible) eye.

Elena gives instructions to everyone.

"Akira and Carol are talking about a significant decline in the performance of information-gathering equipment inside the Serantaru building. Everyone check the condition of their information-gathering equipment. Check that my information-gathering equipment is not broken. It seems that there may also be anomalies in short-range communication, so if the line is in poor condition, it could be disconnected. Make sure you have a simple map of the Serantalville and the location of everyone, including yourself."

The goggle-shaped display device worn by Akira displays a brief map of the surrounding enemy situation and the Serantaru building. The display data is from Elena. Information gathering equipment, etc. had been set up in advance so that various types of data could be linked prior to departure.

Akira somehow sees Carol. Carol doesn't wear a display device that looks like it. I wonder about it and ask Carol as she fingers her own goggles.

"Does Carol have to put something on or something?

Carol answers with a good laugh.

"I am modifying both eyes as part of my physical enhancement. That's why we don't need that hand display device."

"Really?"

Akira peeks carefully into Carol's eyes. Carol stares back at Akira, smiling proudly.

"... you just look like a normal eye"

"It's made of nanomaterials that mimic biological function. But what do you say? It must be quite something."

"No, that's why I'm only seeing normal eyes"

"Don't you think your eyes shine differently?

"... when they say that, it's like something different..., no, what do you think? Hmm."

When Akira is roaring, Sarah interrupts Akira and the others who seem to be staring at each other from the side.

"Akira. Have you confirmed?

"Ah, yes. Sorry, not yet."

Akira answered with a little panic and thought Sarah was the same physical enhancement expander as Carol. And Sarah also realized she wasn't wearing anything like goggles.

Ask Sarah as Akira fingers her own goggles just like she did when Carol.

"Does Sarah also not need goggles like this or anything? Carol says he's modifying both eyes."

"What?... Oh, that's the thing. Me and Elena use this."

When Sarah understood Akira's question, she pointed to an ornament that also looked like a hair ornament that was reaching her head. The look on Akira's face when she sees it turns into something confusing. Continue explaining with Sarah smiling bitterly.

"This is a small stereoscopic video display device. They're showing footage right in front of me, a few millimeters away."

Akira turns her expression into something that has deepened her confusion.

"Um, is it okay to put that stuff in a shaky place like your hair? I feel like the footage is really shaking and very spicy."

"It's okay. The video doesn't shake at all, so it's easy to see, and you can move the display out of sight when it's out of the way. It's convenient to do a lot of manipulation with your gaze."

"What technology would make such a thing?

"Come on? I'm refreshed about the technical stuff, too. However, the description of the product also stated that it was diverting technology from the old world, so I guess Akira is doing a lot to solve what she said."

"I see."

Akira's expression turned into something that convinced her. To be precise, I gave up any further understanding. Old world technology. No questions asked persuasion existed in that language.

Ideas like Akira are not uncommon in the east. That's something I can't help. A rare (rare) kind of genius is born, raised, learned, and gained knowledge in a privileged environment, and spending his life elucidating its principles is still not enough to understand. That's the technology of the old world.

Akira thought of the woman who had been here before when she heard the word 3D video. I looked over the hall again, but there was no such person.

"... you're not here"

Sarah asks Akira wondering.

"What's wrong?

"No, I kind of remembered the word 3D footage."

Carol also notices and begins to look around.

"You're certainly not here."

Elena also noticed that Akira was looking for a 3D video woman who looked like an admin personality for this building. Preliminary information told me that when someone comes into the building, they always show up. But I don't see anyone like it.

"Serantal. The managerial personality of the building. I thought I might be able to hear a lot of things because of this situation, but I don't think I can. Akira, don't look forever, adjust your information-gathering equipment. It's over?

"Almost there, too."

Akira rushes to continue adjusting the information-gathering equipment. I don't have an alpha, so I have to make my own adjustments. After all the attempts, Akira put the settings back together because she only found that changing the settings poorly would make the accuracy worse.

Ask Elena while Sikarabe adjusts the settings of the information-gathering equipment.

"Speaking of which, how did you get this Serantalville map data? This wouldn't be the data Drancam provided. Is that Elena's old one?

Carol interrupts and answers.

"Oh, that map data is mine."

Ask Carol with a slightly unexpected look on her face.

"... is that good? Your map data would mean a sale with a secret agreement electronically signed.... hey, I guess you're not willing to deduct everyone's share of the price from the reward"

Answer with a tongue-in-cheek look that Carol said was out of heart.

"Alas, it's a long way to say that I provided personal effects data in good faith and free of charge for the safety of everyone. Don't you agree with Akira?

Akira, suddenly told the story, answers with a little confusion.

"What? Oh, right. It is useful to have map data. It'll help."

Ask as Sikarabe sends Carol a gaze of suspicion.

"I'm sorry, but I didn't grow up so pure and innocent that I could believe in pro bono goodwill. Plus, I can see about the market price for Serantarville map data. It's not like raising change. You, how long have you been such a philanthropist?

Akira is also a person who has nothing to do with the environment in which she grows to be pure innocent. When I heard about Sikarabe, I began to suspect that there was something behind it.

Carol notices how Akira is doing and immediately tells Shikarabe the answer that sounds like it.

"Excuse me. If it's for the safety of me, the person I took off the dead place with, and my friend, that's about it. Well, if you're going to tell us why Sikarabe is so comfortable, sometimes it's just pre-mutation map data. Among the ruins of the old world is a place that suddenly changes its internal structure one day. Even if not, no wonder there's a massive number of monsters and a massive number of hunters engaged inside the Serantar building, causing the floor to collapse. So the value of the map before the anomaly is greatly reduced. And if the main unit that follows us gets some control of the Selantarville, there will be people who will be running the latest version of the map data. In that case, the price of the data before the anomaly will drop even further. That's the result of my overall judgment. Convinced?

Carol didn't speak to convince Sikarabe. Sikarabe noticed about that as well. At the same time, even if Carol is up to something, it doesn't hurt the team. Sikarabe understood that too.

I am not interested in companies that are not harmful to me. Sikarabe is convinced and tells Carol in the dark that she will no longer touch the matter.

"... oh, I'm convinced. I'm sorry I doubted you weirdly."

"It's fine. If you understand."

Sikarabe and Carol ended the story with a meaningful smile somewhere.

Carol provided free map data for her own safety, but also to sell thanks to Elena and the others, thereby improving Akira's testimony. I don't want to be crushed by Shikarabe's suspicions. The story Carol made of Sikarabe also included the meaning of getting rid of it.

Carol checks on Akira on the side. The colour of Akira's expression and suspicion of Carol had disappeared as per the prospectus.

Elena speaks to everyone, especially to Sikarabe.

"If you're ready, it's time to leave, okay? And don't sprinkle the seeds."

"I'm sorry. I'm ready. Let's go."

When Elena saw Akira and the others, Akira and the others nodded lightly and expressed their gratitude.

Tighten your expression so Akira can regain her temper and focus on her whole body. More than Alpha hasn't returned, Akira must follow Elena and the others on her own. Do whatever you can to keep your hands around your feet. Akira was strongly determined.

'I'm home. Did you miss me?

Akira's intentions were immediately wasted. Because Alpha appeared in Akira's sight again and said so with a smile (ho ho).

When Akira answers Alpha's question honestly, she has to say yes. Ask the opposite question in an unsatisfactory manner to avoid it.

'What were you doing at a time like this?

'Kind of. Never mind, it's no big deal.'

'Stop it if it's not a big deal. Where do you think you are right now?

'That's not what I meant. At least I was doing something I just missed my seat. If you want to know the specifics, you can talk about it, but you need to ask Akira a question and answer to make sure you understand the contents correctly after she asks you about the various rules and conventions that take about half an hour in order to meet the conditions for me to tell Akira about it, but you want to hear it?

"I don't want to hear it"

"Isn't that right?

Alpha laughed with pleasure when she heard the answer as expected.
