Chapter 168: Not Short On Healers
It wasn’t long before the chaos cause by the influx of new heroes caused teams to send members for clarification from Kalli.
She already had notes posted on the wall, explaining that the newcomers were from the Arks and the underwater base. Nobody had an issue with the new people, but they did want to know the situation, and what region had fallen that they had so many new faces.
Five hundred new faces was more people than they had to begin with, and the presence of so many heroes with healing abilities changed their entire tactic.
No longer did they have to spread out to hold the line, while remaining within range of the healers. Now, there were enough healers that they could fight in whatever way was the most effective.
The Ogres were still charging at the walls constantly, while the heroes fought to keep them from smashing the outer wall into an easily climbed slope.
That appeared to be their tactic of choice at the moment, as so many blows were aimed at the wall itself, instead of at the heroes atop it. But nobody had time to be worrying about the repair schedule after the battle, they only had time to focus on not dying or being overrun by Ogres.
"How is the situation in the healing room?" Kalli asked the next runner, meaning the resurrection pod.
"Currently stable. There are some of the level one heroes watching it now, but nobody has come out since the last batch of new people."
He wanted to say that everything was looking up, but he didn’t dare to put it into words and risk jinxing the whole thing. There was nothing worse for your odds of survival than saying that you had good odds of survival.
Kalli returned to watching the feed from the turrets, which showed that the Ogres were falling fast, but also that the magma corrupted monsters were still not joining the fight.
In fact, they seemed to be diminishing.
Whether that was because the Ogres were killing them, or because they didn’t respawn when there was a certain concentration of monsters in the area, and the air defence batteries had eliminated many of them, she did not know.
But what she did know was that there were no more Ogres on the horizon.
What they had in the area appeared to be all of them for the morning, so the heroes might get some time to rest before the next wave of attackers.
The third trial was absolutely insane, as far as Kalli was concerned. They were being swarmed by monsters wave after wave. But there didn’t seem to be any sort of logic behind the timing, and they were not coming from anywhere.
They had simply appeared for the battle.
For a brief moment, she wished that they had the firepower to deal with that asteroid that was most likely the cause of this entire disaster. But she feared that now that the process had started, it might only make things worse.
While it was almost certainly related to the events, there was no guarantee that removing it would stop them. If the merger of the worlds continued, but removing the asteroid removed access to the System, what would they do?
Die, that’s what they’d do.
For now, she would focus on improving their living conditions. She had almost all the resources from the second trial left to place, after all.
Six buildings, two dungeons. Those were the core aspects, as she had already placed the barrier over the greenhouse, and they had the Arks nearby in place of the fishing boat.
Though, she would bring that out after the battle.
Instead of worrying herself over things she couldn’t change, Kalli began making plans for the keep, based on what they were likely to need, and where she should place it.
For now, it wasn’t safe to expand outside the walls, and she wouldn’t want to put tall buildings next to the tuber fields, which would mess up their sunlight.
Though, the more that she looked at them, the more that she was realizing there was something very wrong with their binary star system.
For one, the orbit of their planet only seemed to circle one of the two stars.
Unless it passed between them and made a figure 8 pattern, that didn’t make any sense at all. Her understanding of gravity said that they should orbit outside the pair, with the pull of the two stars conflicting.
Was the second sun not a sun at all?
It gave off light and heat, it should be one. But the orbital data she had from the satellites suggested that it was not. Trying to figure out what else it could possibly be, like a bioluminescent planet, was enough to keep her from worrying too much about what was going on at the wall.
[ Feeling useless is the worst feeling in the world. Everyone is out there fighting to survive, and where am I? Standing behind my counter waiting for them to come order more supplies to keep themselves alive.
It feels like I’m just a placeholder, some grand cosmic joke being played on the heroes.
But what else can I do? The store doesn’t operate without me, even if I can allow them to bring up the whole inventory on the screens, nobody can purchase them without me present.
So, I just stand here and hope that my guidance is enough to keep us all from dying? ]
For a moment, Kalli felt her thoughts spiralling, then gritted her teeth and tried to think of anything else.
Music. That was what she needed. A bit of upbeat theme music so she didn’t keep thinking about death and failure. However, the moment that she turned the radio on, it felt so horribly out of place that she couldn’t keep it going.
Instead, she changed the playlist to the sort of soothing instrumental elevator music that just gave a bit of background noise to keep the place from being too quiet.
That was better than nothing, anyhow.
But she needed a plan that wasn’t "Hold the walls and don’t die".
At least, a plan of some sort to begin once that was actually an option.
