Chapter 186: New Level 1 Heroes Need Kills

The newly minted level 1 heroes found their calling in the new {Air Defence Battery} emplacements.

They rushed over in groups of ten to man the guns, even though they knew that they were going to have to switch out every few minutes.

It was relatively easy points, and the other heroes had informed them that they got experience from the System for killing higher level targets, so they should actually level up very quickly if they could take out mass numbers of monster in this wave.

It felt like cheating, but if the System said that it was fair, then they would exploit the method as hard as possible.

That immediately improved the results that the defensive formation was getting against the Cyclops forces with their barrier skills, but the flying Rogues did have to back off a little further, as many of the new heroes were not particularly good shots.

Or, they were too excited, and not shooting straight. But nobody was taking any risks.

They were getting better after a few minutes, and the doubled firepower was crushing the Cyclops front lines long before they were going to reach the walls.

At least, on most sides of the walls.

The northeast, where the Cyclops force had circled around the Arks, was the closest to the walls, and they were almost there now, while the west and southwest sides were blocked by the river, which ran too deep for most of the forces to cross.

As Kalli had feared, the Giants knew how to swim.

And at their size, even the mighty river wasn’t going to slow them down too much. Only enough to make them easy targets.

They had enough cannons now that each of them took a zone, while the Rogues circled behind the enemy force. Not for much longer, though. Kalli could see that their firing rate was slowing, so they were out of mana, and would have to give up and return soon, before the suits ran out as well.

They were doing their best to target the cyclops force, as while the rest of the army was scary, it was nothing compared to the barriers that could withstand such punishing firepower.

The northern wall was the first to find out when one of them made it to the vanguard.

Lightning and fireballs exploded against the shield, while dozens of laser beams impacted the barrier at once. The barrier held with a golden glow, and the front row of heroes was pushed back as the Giant advanced.

Then, one of the Rogues closed from behind and loaded the Cyclops’ head with pulse cannon fire.

That ended the threat of the shield, but the smaller enemies had made it to the wall, and they were attempting to get over. They had brought ladders and entire trees with them, which were laid against the stone to form a ramp.

Having giants in the force definitely had advantages, as the brutes could carry a twenty-metre tall tree over their shoulder.

However, with the tanks in power armour, the heroes were not weaklings either.

Kalli watched on the camera feed as Reggie managed to grab an Ogre in a leg lock after his sword was knocked from his hand. Then, the heavily armoured warrior gave a twist and the Ogre was thrown through the air in a crude suplex that was much more effective than it was pretty.

Reggie was back on his feet in half a second, but the Ogre was pinned to the ground by the other warriors in the group, and quickly killed.

The technique was not one that most warriors would go for, as it left them vulnerable as well. But it definitely worked, especially with the power armour. That extra bonus was enough to throw around the Ogres, as the System had declared the smaller Giants, with surprising ease, even against their struggles.

The Rogues gathered to eliminate the last of the Cyclops forces that had reached the wall, then practically crash landed in front of the hall of heroes, out of mana and exhausted.

"These suits are amazing, but that’s going to be the death of me. There isn’t even a warning until it gets to one percent mana reserve, and then you’ve only got two minutes of flight time left." Sinn complained.

"Check the suit settings, you should be able to turn that up, or add another warning. But good work clearing the cyclops forces. Here, grab some pork buns and catch your breath.

They’re going to need you back on the line soon, and we don’t have a lot more Rogues high enough level to be able to form a second squad.

As you already noticed, it takes a lot to properly control the suits in combat. If they’re in the hands of someone like me, who doesn’t have the specialized skills for it, the amount of damage that a team can do plummets to less than a third of the total, so it’s simply not worth making another squad without high level pilots.

But other than that, how did it go?

Any concerns before you’re rested? Need a change of weapons, or anything else?"

The rogues shook their heads. "Nothing that we can think of. The Pulse Cannon is the best that we could hope for, I think. The only other option would be a solid projectile weapon that doesn’t burn through mana."

"I can give you a heavy machine gun, fifty calibre with armour piercing or rare grade rounds. That’s basically identical damage per shot to the pulse cannon, but faster firing. The only issue is that it’s not going to last as long before reloading, and I’m not sure that you can switch ammunition belts in flight.

The weapons weren’t really designed to be used while being carried, after all."

She had a point. They were designed to be hard mounted. But so were the pulse cannons. The only difference was that they didn’t need free hands to reload.

"We will take them if things get dire. But for now, we’re just going to lay here."

Kalli laughed at the exhausted Rogues. "Enjoy your snacks and let your mana recover. There’s always more work to do."
