Chapter 474: The Locusts
Just as the first wave of locusts arrived sounding like a mawing machine, three minutes were up and Lu Zhen, together with a few others who had come to wait at the gate worked together to close the it.
This disaster was isolated outside, but they didn’t know how many people would survive it.
Even while underground, they didn’t need Lu Tao’s super hearing to hear the sound of locusts outside.
These insects moved together like train cabins. It was as if they were attached.
Millions upon millions of locusts passed above the surface wave after wave.
It was only after three days that Leng Pan and the others realized that the locusts seemed to move in a particular pattern.
Every single day at seven in the morning, a wave of locusts would pass through.
It was as if they were migrating and each migration lasted two hours.
After two hours, at around 9:00 in the morning, it would stop. Or to be more precise, that wave would travel far.
Then, the skies would be clear for about five hours before another wave passed by at 2:00 in the afternoon.
This time, it would last for three hours until 5:00 in the afternoon.
After that, the locusts seemed to disappear off the face of the earth. You couldn’t even find one if you searched with a light.
During this time, everything would be peaceful until the morning of the next day at 7:00 am again.
This cycle repeated itself and no one knew what it meant or why it happened.
So, after the third day and everyone understood this cycle, Leng Pan ventures outside.
The gates were opened at 10:00 am, at least an hour after the first wave just to ensure that no stragglers remained behind.
Even if there were, they would be too few to pose a threat.
To her surprise, when she walked out, the devastating scene she had imagined of collapsed buildings was nowhere to be seen.
The buildings in the base were still intact.
However, not a single blade of grass remained.
All the trees, vegetables, and other vegetation that had been planted within the base was gone.
Even the roots of the trees were gone.
This was the only indication of the new disaster.
However, Leng Pan wasn’t fooled by the appearance of the seemingly intact base.
She took out a modified off-road vehicle, and headed towards the gate of the base.
Others seemed to be bored and wanted to explore outside too.
Lu Zhen, as a wife-doting maniac wouldn’t stay behind while his wife went out into such a dangerous environment.
So, just as Leng Pan got into the driver’s seat of the car, the passenger side door was opened and the man got in.
With a shake of her head, she didn’t mind and fastened her seatbelt before stepping on the accelerator and driving towards the main gate.
"You want to check out how other places are doing?" Lu Zhen asked as he found a comfortable position to settle in the car.
"Yeah. The scene mom described is absent in our base, but that might not be the case in other places. So, I want to see how the outside looks like." Leng Pan replied nonchalantly.
In fact, she was worried. If the locusts really consumed everything, that means everything would truly be gone.
Even though the apocalypse had been going on for a long time already, people could still stumble upon places that haven’t been touched before and manage to scavenge some supplies that kept them going.
However, if the locusts even reduced buildings to rubble, what supplies would there be left?
That could only mean that now they would have to find a way to truly produce the non-renewable products and grow food.
However, the meterorites that fell and the gas released had even ruined the texture and composition of the soil.
Crops couldn’t be grown like before.
The only reason their base could so easily grow crops was because they stockpiled a lot of soil and seeds before the apocalypse arrived.
Moreover, Leng Pan used the spiritual spring water to dilute the water used for watering the plants.
In this way, the energy in the water restored the soil and made it suitable for growing crops again.
In fact, because of the energy, the vegetables watered with this water even did better than before the apocalypse.
But other places didn’t have the spiritual spring water and those who did salvage some soil to grow crops had no way to grow food.
With the arrival of these locusts, the apocalypse just got another degree harder and the survival rate for humans became lower.
Not to forget that the aliens were watching them with covetous eyes to strike a bow while they are down and take over the planet.
Nothing seemed to be going well for them. Yet, they still had to struggle to survive.
"Don’t worry too much, things will get better." Lu Zhen seemed to feel her emotions and comforted her.
Even though it seemed that hope was dwindling with every disaster.
However, they had fought to the end in the first apocalypse, and Leng Pan wouldn’t give up so easily.
"Mhmm....I know." She replied softly.
"By the way, I forgot to tell you that I gained a space too." Lu Zhen suddenly dropped a bombshell that caused Leng Pan to step on the brake of the vehicle abruptly.
It happened so fast that those who had followed behind nearly crashed into them.
Luckily, with all this time in the apocalypse, the reaction speed of many people had been honed.
So, nothing happened. They just thought that the person driving ahead had seen something that shocked them to the point of breaking without warning.
This was because Leng Pan had stopped the car just two meters outside the gate of the base.
Without another word, she quickly created a mist bubble around the car to isolate the space she and Lu Zhen were in.
