Chapter 243: A Strong Connection with President Xiao Lu
"Do you have any idea who I am?"
Ann Betty stood up, hoping to dispel Yun Zijin’s intimidating aura by looking down on her.
"Ann Betty, wasn’t it? You just introduced yourself a moment ago."
’Ann Betty must really have a few screws loose,’ Yun Zijin thought.
How could Mrs. Cen possibly feel at ease letting her out on the town?
"You! I am Mr. Cen’s secretary!"
Yun Zijin raised an eyebrow. ’Mr. Cen’s secretary, eh?’
"Does your chairman’s wife know you’re attending this symposium with your dear Mr. Cen today?"
Bringing a secretary instead of his wife to such a formal event... it’s hard not to let one’s imagination run wild.
"What’s that got to do with you!"
"You’re right, it’s not my business. Zero One, take her to Mr. Cen and tell him he shouldn’t let every stray dog off its leash. If it bites someone, he’s the one who’ll be held responsible."
"Yes, Miss!"
This time, Zero One gave Ann Betty no time to react. He grabbed her by the belt and hoisted her into the air.
Ann Betty wanted to struggle, but she was wearing an off-the-shoulder dress; any sudden movement threatened to expose her. Left with no other choice, she resorted to spewing a torrent of vile insults.
Zero One remained unfazed, his eyes scanning the crowd for the man who had brought Ann Betty to the symposium: Chairman Cen.
Ann Betty’s loud, profanity-laced tirade naturally drew the attention of many guests. They all began to speculate what she could have possibly done to have a bodyguard ordered to haul her away.
Zero One quickly located Chairman Cen Senrong. He strode over, still carrying Ann Betty, and unceremoniously dropped her beside the chairman.
"Chairman Cen. My Miss has a message for you: ’You shouldn’t let every stray dog off its leash. If it bites someone, you’re the one who will be held responsible.’"
Having said his piece, he turned and left without waiting for Cen Senrong’s reaction, giving the chairman no opportunity to ask for an explanation.
"Who was that?"
Cen Senrong asked those around him.
Most people just shook their heads. They had never seen the man before, either.
After a long moment, someone in the crowd spoke up hesitantly, "I think I saw him come from that direction. It’s less crowded over there. I think only that group went to sit there for a bit. Now, the only one left is the young woman who came in with them."
Cen Senrong immediately turned to the speaker. "Are you sure?"
If that was the case, then this young woman was not to be trifled with.
Cen Senrong couldn’t believe it. In the span of just ten minutes, Ann Betty had managed to stir up a hornet’s nest.
And by the looks of it, a rather large one at that.
Ann Betty could only stand quietly to the side, trembling like a quail. She was just Cen Senrong’s secretary—the disposable kind.
The main reason she had confronted Yun Zijin was jealousy. She was envious that while they were both women, Yun Zijin was worshipped like a princess, while she had to debase herself as a dirty little secret for an old man!
When she’d heard that Yun Zijin had grown up in an orphanage, she had been delighted, glad that there was finally one thing in which she was superior.
But after seeing the bodyguard Yun Zijin had summoned, Ann Betty finally understood that the gap in their status was as wide as the distance between heaven and earth.
"I only caught a fleeting glimpse. With a group like that over there, how would I dare to stare?"
"If you’re concerned, Chairman Cen, you could go over and see for yourself. Didn’t you say your daughter has quite the relationship with that young master of the Lu Family?"
In truth, most of them were just dying to know the identity of the young woman who had arrived with that VIP group.
Hearing them mention his daughter and Lu Yunque, Cen Senrong proudly puffed out his chest. That connection was his trump card, the very thing that allowed him to feel a cut above everyone else in this crowd.
Because of this connection, Cen Senrong was even convinced that Cen Mulin was likely to become Lu Yunque’s future wife.
Then, the Cen Family could ride the Lu Family’s coattails straight to the top.
Meanwhile, Ann Betty, standing silently to the side, wore a peculiar expression as she listened to everyone fawn over the supposed relationship between Cen Mulin and Lu Yunque.
’Do they not know that Lu Yunque already has a girlfriend?’
She had heard it with her own two ears just moments ago: Yun Zijin had explicitly said she was President Xiao Lu’s girlfriend.
Ann Betty considered warning Cen Senrong, but they didn’t give her a chance to speak. The whole procession was already moving majestically toward Yun Zijin.
Ann Betty: ’It’s not that I didn’t want to say anything, you just didn’t give me the chance.’
Cen Senrong’s large, imposing group looked like they were spoiling for a fight. In response, the seven members of Zero One’s detail, who had been blending into the crowd, suddenly materialized and formed a protective circle around Yun Zijin.
"Are you the woman who just had a run-in with Ann Betty?"
Cen Senrong hadn’t forgotten that it was on this woman’s orders that a bodyguard had just dragged Ann Betty over to him.
If someone hadn’t brought up the connection between his daughter Mulin and President Xiao Lu, he would have been utterly humiliated.
Yun Zijin had just done a quick search on her phone for key figures at the Cen company, so she’d seen Cen Senrong’s online profile. She knew the man at the front of the group was its chairman.
He was also the man who had brought Ann Betty to the symposium.
"Has Chairman Cen come here to hold me accountable?"
Yun Zijin glanced at Ann Betty, who was hiding at the back of the crowd. ’Didn’t think Cen Senrong would value her this much,’ she mused.
’To think he’d personally lead a posse over to demand an explanation.’
"I am the one who brought Ann Betty here. Even if you have some connection to President Xiao Lu and his circle, that gives you no right to be so insolent to my secretary."
"However, seeing as you’re still young, I’m willing to let this matter drop if you just apologize to Ann Betty."
Hearing Cen Senrong’s words, Yun Zijin simply stared at him as if he were a complete moron.
"Chairman Cen, what is the meaning of this? Did you bring this whole crowd over to cause trouble for my girlfriend?"
Before Yun Zijin could say a word, Lu Yunque’s voice cut through from behind Cen Senrong’s entourage. Everyone hurriedly turned to look.
And there they were: Lu Yunque and his three companions, all returning together.
"President Xiao Lu! I’m Cen Senrong, and my daughter is Cen Mulin. I’d like to thank you so very much for taking care of my daughter while you were at university."
Yun Zijin shot Lu Yunque a look that said: ’You took care of Cen Mulin at school?’
Lu Yunque’s expression screamed: ’I’ve been framed! All I ever did was study! I never thought about anything else!’
"Chairman Cen, I’m afraid there’s been a misunderstanding. I wasn’t particularly close with any female students during my university days, let alone in a position to ’take care’ of anyone."
Desperate to clear his name, Lu Yunque very pointedly explained that he had had no significant interactions with Cen Senrong’s daughter at university.
Cen Senrong was dumbfounded. What was happening? At home, his daughter had always claimed that President Xiao Lu had looked after her quite well while they were studying abroad. How could President Xiao Lu now be saying he wasn’t close to any female students?
The others began to give Cen Senrong strange looks. Hadn’t he just been boasting about how well President Xiao Lu looked after his daughter?
So this was what "looking after her quite well" looked like?
"President Xiao Lu, my daughter’s name is Cen Mulin. She told me you were always very kind to her when you were studying abroad. Mulin never lies."
Cen Senrong desperately tried to jog Lu Yunque’s memory of Cen Mulin.
