Chapter 820: Who Can Stop Them?
The last part of the journey is always the hardest.
After more than a dozen hours of flight, a direct flight from Shangjing to the west coast of North America finally landed slowly on the runway of LAX.
A day ago, this major international airport was pre-arranged.
From the entrance to the VIP corridor to the airport runway, the flags of both China and the United States were planted.
Local state legislators, representatives of civic groups, as well as White House and NASA officials from Washington, D.C., stood in a black-pressed row next to the gangway, greeting astronauts returning from tens of millions of kilometres away under the footage of media reporters.
“Welcome home, our warrior…” opened his arms to welcome Johnson down the stairs, the vice president hugged the frosty astronaut and said to him in a heavy voice, "It's been a long time since you've suffered. ”
“Thank you…” let go of the vice president, Johnson asked in a somewhat tired voice, "Where's my wife? ”
“Here she is, and your children. ”
The vice president stepped aside.
With a beautiful little blonde, she ran up her calf and into Johnson's arms.
“Dad!”
“Hey, my little guy... miss your dad?” Rubbing her little girl's head, Johnson squatted half to the ground, and finally a smile spread over her tired face.
The angelic smile made him feel exhausted and healed in an instant.
Watching the teardropper walk toward his wife, and his two sons, half squatted on the ground, he stood up and gave his sons, and this great woman a hug.
Lie in the arms of your husband, Julian swallowing and muttering.
“… you are finally back. ”
Buried his nose between his wife's hair, Johnson took a deep breath and said with a slightly trembling voice.
“Sorry to bother you...”
Not far away, the cameras in the hands of journalists recorded this touching scene and moved it onto the television screen, touching more American families.
But it doesn't matter to Johnson.
Importantly, the journey was ultimately unbearable.
He's finally home...
After releasing his wife, Johnson shook hands with everyone who came to greet him and then hugged them.
Although Ares failed, no one would blame a hero who had challenged the no-life zone.
Being able to return safely from tens of millions of kilometres away is a remarkable thing in itself.
Neither was he the one who was saved.
Getting in the limousine waiting outside the VIP tunnel, Johnson relaxed a little while back against the chair, but just as he waited for his wife and children, he saw that it was not his family, but Director Carson and Vice President, who went on to walk in.
The door closes and the car starts slowly.
Lifting his eyelids, he glanced at the vice president sitting opposite him, and Johnson asked.
“Are you going to drive me and my family back to Arizona? ”
“Of course not, we'll put you in a hotel in Los Angeles City first, and your flight home will be in a week.” The vice president smiled and put his hands together, then looked at Director Carson sitting next to him, "I'm sorry to interrupt your reunification with your family, but our Mr. Carson... he wants to talk to you about something. ”
“With regard to the Moon Palace and the Xia Guang… and everything you see,” Carson squeezed a smile out of his face, adding, “you know, there are things that are not easy to talk about on the Chinese communication channel. ”
Johnson laughed and said, "There's no need... I don't think the Chinese would care, otherwise they wouldn't have let me back, would they? ”
Director Carson and Vice President exchanged sights and opened their mouths to Johnson, trying to ask.
“Perhaps you need to rest now? If so, we can talk about it again tomorrow..."
“No,” Johnson shook his head, "let's talk now, it doesn't take much time per se, and I don't want to waste another whole day discussing this tomorrow. ”
“OK, thank you for your cooperation," Director Carson photographed and gave him an encouraging look, "let's … begin with the Summer Glow. ”
Johnson nodded, “No problem, but I can only tell you what I saw… and I hope you're not too surprised next. ”
Closed his eyes and remembered for a moment, Johnson spoke slowly to the vice president sitting across from him and NASA director Carson about what he had heard on the way from the orbit of Mars to his return to Earth.
“The Chinese ship is huge, with blue fire spraying behind two pairs of open wings… or perhaps not fire, xenon plasma? This is probably it. When we sit back in the cabin looking out, we feel like a lifeboat sailing next to a giant wheel. They recycled us without much effort and then provided us with fresh water and food… even cleaning the bathroom for personal hygiene. ”
“The cabin of the Xia Guang was probably modified by the cargo compartment, but the facilities on it were quite complete, and it was not this that shocked the most, but their attitude towards energy. The energy on the Xia Guang is almost limitless, at least nobody reminds us how many quotas of electricity or water we can use a day. They have little restriction on our freedom except to return to our room at the prescribed time… It is like a tour on the Xia Guang compared to the difficult environment on the BFS. ”
“It's not these that surprise me the most, it's the Moon Palace.” Speaking of the Lunar Palace, Johnson unconsciously appeared in his weary pupils with a hint of shock, "it was like a fortress… a fortress floating in the sky. The open solar panels and heat sinks are like farmland, standing in front of it, any spacecraft is just as small as a tiny piece of dust floating between the universes...”
The moon palace shocked Johnson considerably more than the Xia Guang.
For the remaining ten minutes, his narrative has basically focused on the life of the Lunar Palace.
Until he uttered the last word, neither of the two men sitting opposite him who could hear God ever spoke.
The silent atmosphere persisted in the car for a long time.
Sitting next to the silent Director Carson, the Vice President took a deep breath, stretched out his trembling fingers and removed his glasses, took out his glasses cloth and rubbed it, whispering to himself and saying a few words.
“God… unbelievable. ”
If everything the astronaut said is not exaggerated...
The Chinese space technology has reached a level that he can't imagine!
When he heard the phrase, Johnson snapped and laughed at himself and said.
“It's unbelievable...”
The gaze drifted boringly out the window, looking at the landscape passing along the way, and the giant egg-shaped building standing not far from the suburban highway, Johnson glanced slightly and asked with a slightly curious voice.
“What's that? ”
Last time I was in Los Angeles, it was five years ago.
He doesn't remember this strange thing on the way to the airport.
“You mean that? That's our national ignition device, California's 'artificial sun,'” the vice president laughed, regained some spirit, looked at Director Carson sitting next to him and said, "Well, my man, there's no need to be so depressed. Despite setbacks to the Ares plan, the federal government and American names will not change their resolve to space. ”
“The little sun in California... is it?” Johnson laughed, and the tone of voice was a little pessimistic, "maybe when we built it, they moved the fusion device to the moon. ”
Although he did not say who they were, the context's pointing was obvious.
After hearing the sentence, the Vice-President sitting opposite him was slightly stunned and subconsciously rebutted.
“It is impossible for them to conduct nuclear tests on the Moon. ”
“Maybe," Johnson replied casually, not interested in arguing about the topic, "but if they did, who could have stopped them? Is it our Director Carson or the President? Or the Congressional Budget Committee? ”
I'm afraid whichever one...
I don't think so.
