Chapter 272 - 261: Georgia, Do You Believe in Fate? Part 1
Just because he said "I love you," the walls she had put up came crumbling down.
’I really am too soft-hearted.’ Faced with his relentless advances, she was always helpless.
The next morning, when Georgia Thorne woke up, she found they had somehow fallen asleep on the bed, and she was mostly lying on top of Elliot Sheridan.
While he was still asleep, she carefully slipped out of bed and started making breakfast.
Elliot Sheridan woke up not long after Georgia Thorne got out of bed.
While Georgia Thorne was making porridge, she saw him come out of the bathroom and get on his phone.
Half an hour later, Owen Sawyer arrived with a fresh change of clothes.
"Good morning, President. Good morning, Madam," Owen Sawyer greeted.
He wasn’t a gossip, but the apartment was so small that the bed—and the comforter on the floor—were the first things he saw upon entering.
’Did the President really sleep on the floor last night?’ he couldn’t help but wonder.
Owen Sawyer was starting to really admire Georgia Thorne. She had Elliot Sheridan completely wrapped around her finger.
’It’s true what they say, for every force, there’s a counterforce.’ Georgia Thorne was clearly born to tame Elliot Sheridan.
Georgia Thorne had cooked the rice porridge until it was extra soft. Looking at Owen Sawyer, she asked, "Secretary Sawyer, would you like a bowl?"
It was only seven o’clock. If Owen Sawyer had come from Elliot Sheridan’s apartment with the clothes, he must have been up very early.
Owen Sawyer wanted to say yes. He had been rushing between two different places since early this morning and hadn’t even had a sip of hot water.
But before he could open his mouth, Elliot Sheridan cut him off. "Secretary Sawyer has already eaten. Don’t worry about him."
He hadn’t eaten anything.
Owen Sawyer wanted to look aggrieved, but he didn’t dare. A certain someone’s sharp gaze shot toward him, his lowered voice laced with a heavy warning.
Georgia Thorne picked up an empty bowl and looked at Owen Sawyer. "Is that right?"
Under such a threat, how could Owen Sawyer dare to say otherwise?
He forced a smile. "Madam, I had a big breakfast this morning. I’m still stuffed!"
Elliot lowered his gaze. "Go wait outside."
"Yes, sir!" ’My boss is so cheap,’ Owen Sawyer thought. ’After all the years I’ve spent working myself to the bone for him, I can’t even get a bowl of his wife’s porridge.’
Georgia Thorne ladled a bowl of porridge for herself and sat down across from Elliot to eat.
She sprinkled white sugar over her plain porridge. It was how she liked to eat it when there were no side dishes.
Seeing this, Elliot pushed his bowl toward her. Georgia looked at him, confused. "What’s wrong?"
"Did you put sugar in mine?"
Georgia shook her head. "Has your sense of taste come back?"
"So just because I can’t taste anything, you won’t put any in for me? Georgia Thorne, you’re abusing your husband!"
Georgia was speechless.
She was growing more and more impressed with Elliot. He could say something so childish with a perfectly straight face.
’So not adding sugar is considered abuse now?’
With a helpless smile, Georgia sprinkled a spoonful of sugar into his porridge. Then, a certain someone said, "Add one more."
Georgia silently added another spoonful. Anyone watching would have thought his sense of taste had returned.
Elliot slowly stirred the porridge in his bowl. He took a bite. Still no taste.
And yet, he could have sworn he tasted a hint of sweetness.
After breakfast, Elliot leisurely put on his suit jacket and handed her his tie.
Georgia held the tie and looked up at his ramrod-straight posture. "Can you bend down a little?"
He glanced at her, then slowly lowered his head, meeting her upturned face. He stole a kiss on her cheek.
Georgia froze, caught off guard by his sneak attack. Too flustered to react in time, she shot him an angry glare.
That was a mistake. One look was all it took.
She hadn’t expected him to be so forward. "Georgia," he began, "do you believe in fate?"
’Where did that come from?’
Lately, she couldn’t figure Elliot out. One minute, he was the prim and proper Mr. Sheridan she’d first met; the next, he was acting like a shameless rogue.
As for whether she believed in fate, Georgia thought she did.
The fortune she’d drawn on their trip to Akashima had come true not long after all.
Georgia said nothing, just looked at him, waiting for him to continue.
"I never used to believe in fate, but I do now." Elliot toyed with a strand of her long hair. "Georgia, you are my fate."
Outside of their sweet talk in bed, she rarely heard Elliot say such sentimental things.
Logically, a man as shrewd as him should have been an atheist; God had no place in his worldview.
Everything he had today, he had built with his own two hands.
But now he was saying that she was his fate, and because of her, he believed.
’The cunning devil.’ He knew exactly what her weaknesses were.
Her eyes misted over. She forced the words out. "Elliot, what on earth are you trying to do?"
"Let’s get back together."
"..."
Getting back together. Such simple words, yet for them, it was so difficult. With the memory of their unborn child between them, Elliot’s tone became guarded.
He took the tie from her, turned away, and tied it himself.
They both changed into their clothes.
Elliot took Georgia’s hand as they got into the car.
Owen Sawyer stole a glance at them. One had his full attention fixed on the other, whose eyes were red, as if she’d been crying.
Georgia hadn’t given him a clear answer, but she let Elliot lead her by the hand into the office building.
The employees hadn’t really believed Elliot and Georgia were married. After all, they’d only heard Secretary Sawyer address her as "Madam" once and had never seen any other proof.
Now, seeing it with their own eyes, their envy toward Georgia grew by several degrees.
Elliot’s care for Georgia was plain for all to see. Who wouldn’t fall for a man so considerate and rich?
After seeing the proof, some envied Georgia, while others were disappointed in Elliot.
How could such a handsome, wealthy, and powerful man fall for someone as unremarkable as Georgia Thorne?
Georgia still hadn’t given him an answer. "Let me think about it."
She broke free from his embrace and stepped out of the elevator.
’Think about it.’ Did she need a morning? A whole day?
That morning, Elliot sat distractedly in his office. He couldn’t focus on the documents on his desk and canceled all his meetings.
He had a sudden urge to go see Georgia, to find out what she was doing.
In truth, he’d never believed in fate. He’d always figured it was better to believe in himself.
Everything he possessed today had been earned through his own hard work.
But Georgia was different. She had a mind of her own.
When he saw the contents of the divorce papers, he had completely panicked.
He could let go of anything in this life, but he could never let go of Georgia.
The more he thought, the more his mind churned, completely occupied by the image of Georgia.
Last night, after pulling her close, he had realized she was awake, too.
When she’d snuggled into his embrace, he had been ecstatic—happier than when he had landed his first hundred-billion-dollar project early in his career.
But now, he was growing agitated again, wondering what the outcome of her "thinking about it" would be.
Meanwhile, Georgia had just sat down at her desk, only to be buried under a mountain of backlogged work.
She finished applying the base colors to her latest design, held a team meeting, and prepared to go out and buy supplies that afternoon.
Georgia and Kai skipped lunch, rushing out to purchase the fabrics they needed.
Kai had been studying abroad and mentioned wanting to try some of Portmire’s famous local snacks. Georgia thought about it, but she couldn’t immediately recall where to find the most authentic ones.
Kai, however, mentioned a place with great interest.
Georgia was taken aback. The place Kai mentioned was near her old elementary school.
It wasn’t far—just down the street and across two more roads from where they were.
They had already bought a few things, all of which Kai was carrying.
The snack street was always bustling with business because it was surrounded not just by an elementary school, but by a middle school and a high school as well.
Around mealtimes, it was packed with middle school students, including many young couples walking hand in hand.
Georgia and Kai waited in line for a while to get the local specialty, a soup with rice. Sitting among a crowd of students, the two of them looked particularly out of place.
Georgia looked at the scallions in her bowl and frowned, a headache already starting to form. Before she could say anything, a spoon reached over from across the table and cleanly removed every last one.
The gesture gave Georgia a powerful sense of déjà vu.
Kai took a sip of the fragrant soup and looked up at her. "Why aren’t you eating?"
Georgia stirred her food with her spoon and whispered, "Thank you."
After lunch, the two continued their shopping. Their arms were full of bags when they happened to run into Owen Sawyer on the street.
It was a true coincidence. As the two of them were waiting for a ride, a horn blared from behind them. Owen Sawyer stuck his head out the window. "Madam!"
Coincidence or not, Georgia and Kai got in the car.
Kai’s hands were full, so Georgia opened the car door. However, there was another man already sitting in the back seat.
Owen Sawyer twisted around from the driver’s seat. "Kai, why don’t you sit up front."
Kai was reluctant, but seeing Georgia’s impassive expression, he clenched his fists. "Hello, President."
Elliot gave a noncommittal "mm," his attention fixed on Georgia. He took the bags from her hands. "You’ve been running around all afternoon. You must be tired."
They drove back to the company in silence. Kai got out of the car and looked at Georgia, who hadn’t moved. "Georgia, are you..."
"You can head back to the office. Georgia won’t be going up."
Elliot cut Kai off, casually taking Georgia’s hand as if to declare his ownership.
They were a married couple, and Elliot was his boss. Kai was willing, but powerless to do anything.
Loaded down with bags, the ever-perceptive Owen Sawyer also got out. "You can’t carry all that by yourself. Let me help you!"
With that, he took the items from Kai’s arms and headed into the building.
Inside the car, Elliot moved into the driver’s seat and looked at Georgia in the back. "Not coming up here?"
"..."
"Fine, I’ll be your personal chauffeur for the day!" Elliot said cheerfully, raising an eyebrow.
The corner of Georgia’s mouth twitched as she looked at the man in the front seat.
In the elevator, the image of Elliot holding Georgia’s hand flashed through Kai’s mind. He couldn’t help but ask, "Secretary Sawyer, how long have Georgia and the President been married?"
