Chapter 110: Wife and Children Scattered, Position in Jeopardy
After a few exchanges, Lu Xingye was kicked to the ground.
"Fuck, I’ve never killed a cop before. Guess you’ll be the first."
The man pulled a dagger from his waistband, a savage grin on his face, and lunged at Lu Xingye.
The next second, a sharp pain shot through his hand as the dagger was kicked from his grasp. A vicious kick to the back sent him crashing into the wall.
Lu Xingye stared in shock at Jiang Li’s sudden appearance. His eyes widened in alarm. "Jiang Li, watch out!"
Yu Huannian rushed in from behind, grabbing the man by the collar and slamming him to the floor. He kicked away another assailant to the side and downed a third with a single punch.
"Whoa!" Wu Ming and Miao Anji immediately started clapping and cheering.
Lu Xingye’s body went slack, and he simply lay on the ground. He’d been scared to death.
"Are you okay?" Jiang Li helped him up and onto the sofa.
Lu Xingye shook his head and pointed at the door. Jiang Li went over and pulled it open. Inside, Lin Ye’s wife was awake, strangling a police officer with a charging cable.
Alarmed, Jiang Li rushed forward, pried the woman’s hands away, and slapped her hard across the face. "Are you trying to get yourself killed?"
"COUGH, COUGH... She... she isn’t... Lin Ye’s wife," the officer choked out, pointing under the bed. He looked at Jiang Li with tear-filled eyes. If she’d been a moment later, he would have been a dead man.
Jiang Li looked down and saw another person hiding there.
Seeing her cover was blown, the woman produced a knife and lunged at Jiang Li.
BANG! A gunshot rang out.
Ji Qinghe stood in the doorway, gun in hand. The officers behind her rushed forward to restrain the woman.
"Jiang Li, are you okay?" Ji Qinghe walked over, her expression worried as she checked on her.
"I’m fine, Officer Ji."
"Take the woman and child to the hospital first. Bring the rest back to the station."
Just as Ji Qinghe finished speaking, the woman in front of them spat up a mouthful of black blood and died on the spot.
Seeing this, Lu Xingye ripped up some fabric and gagged the other captured men.
At the police station, Zhou Tiancheng and Zhao Shuo faced Lin Ye.
"Lin Ye, three minutes ago, we received a call from our colleagues. Your wife and daughter have been targeted."
"If our colleagues hadn’t found them in time, they would have died from a gas leak. They clearly don’t give a damn about you. Are you sure you still want to take the fall for them all by yourself?"
As Zhou Tiancheng spoke, Zhao Shuo showed Lin Ye the video that Lu Xingye’s team had sent.
Seeing his unconscious wife and daughter in the video, Lin Ye could no longer remain calm. He had only agreed to take the blame because they’d promised his family would be taken care of and live a good life.
But now, they had tried to murder them.
"Lin Ye, Wu Jianzhang has a guilty conscience and has already admitted to being the mastermind. If you confess now, you’ll be treated with leniency."
Zhao Shuo then played the footage of Wu Jianzhang’s delirious ramblings in the hospital room.
"Yes, it was Wu Jianzhang who made me do it. It was also his assistant, Yang Beiwang, who had my wife come to me and ask me to take the fall for him."
In the end, Lin Ye relented. "I have more evidence against Wu Jianzhang. I can give it to you, but I want to see my wife and daughter first."
Zhou Tiancheng and Zhao Shuo exchanged a look, then both stood up and stepped outside.
"The enemy has already targeted Lin Ye’s family, so they must be watching us constantly. If we arrange a meeting, something could go wrong."
Zhou Tiancheng frowned. Even though Wu Jianzhang told the truth, if the other side claims he was mentally unstable and just rambling, they’d be one step behind.
"Captain Zhou, you’re worried about Wu Jianzhang, aren’t you? Don’t be. It’s fine. The hospital’s official report says he’s mentally sound, just a little shaken up."
Zhao Shuo whispered a few more words in his ear. He found it strange himself, but the report stated everything was normal. ’Thinking about it, Jiang Li, Miao Anji, and the rest are a criminal’s worst nightmare.’
"Huh?"
A shocked expression crossed Zhou Tiancheng’s face. ’From the video, he looked anything but fine.’
"Ahem. It’s not like the hospital would fake a report, right?" Zhao Shuo coughed, pulling Zhou Tiancheng from his thoughts.
Zhou Tiancheng nodded. "Alright, arrange for Lin Ye to meet his wife and daughter here at the station. Let’s see if the evidence he has is related to the real mastermind."
"Right, Captain Zhou."
Zhao Shuo turned and left. Zhou Tiancheng then ordered someone to bring in Yang Baiwan for questioning.
After getting his wounds bandaged, Lu Xingye returned to the station.
Jiang Li and her group followed him inside. She hadn’t met Lin Ye yet.
Jiang Li sat in a chair, having already downed two glasses of water.
"Lin Ye wants to see his wife and daughter. He says he has more evidence on Wu Jianzhang, but he won’t hand it over until he sees them," Lu Xingye said, sitting down beside Jiang Li.
Jiang Li nodded. Her eyebrow shot up when she saw a furious-looking man storm in from outside. ’So, Zhou Fuhai is still around.’
When Zhou Fuhai saw Jiang Li and her group, his blood boiled. He’d truly lost on all fronts.
His family was falling apart, and his job was on the line.
Zhou Fuhai stormed menacingly toward Jiang Li.
Lu Xingye jumped to his feet, blocking his path. "Director Zhou, Jiang Li isn’t one of your subordinates. What do you think you’re doing?!"
Zhou Fuhai narrowed his eyes at Lu Xingye. "Lu Xingye, are you looking to die?"
’None of this would have happened if it weren’t for them. And this punk, Lu Xingye, a rookie who just got off probation, dares to talk to me like that? Does he have a death wish?’
Lu Xingye met his gaze without fear. "Director Zhou, if you want to crush me, you should first worry about how long you’ll be able to keep your own seat."
"We’ve been solving case after case. What have *you* been doing, Director Zhou?"
"It’s almost the end of the year. You want to come after me? Go ahead and try."
’He probably won’t even last that long.’
"You..." Zhou Fuhai’s face flushed with rage. ’When has a subordinate ever dressed me down to my face like this?’
"What’s all this commotion? Don’t you have anything better to do?"
Zhang Hongzhi walked in, flanked by several other people.
Zhou Fuhai froze. He turned his head stiffly. Not only had Zhang Hongzhi come in person, but he was also accompanied by the Secretary of the Disciplinary Committee and the Inspector General.
Zhou Fuhai’s mind went blank. ’But the end-of-year evaluations haven’t even started...’
