Chapter 154 - 152: Belated Lavish Hospitality
Wang Jiawei frowned the moment he heard that, then glanced at Zhou Tiancheng, who was sitting beside him sipping tea.
Zhou Tiancheng immediately shot back, "What? Director Wang, don’t tell me you think I’m behind this? Are the cameras in your station just for show?"
Wang Jiawei rolled his eyes, speechless. He then looked at the officer beside him. "What’s the situation with Miao Anji?"
Zhou Tiancheng instantly turned to Wang Jiawei. "Oh? What’s this? Director Wang, you don’t actually think our Xiao Ji knows the Clone Technique, do you?"
Zhou Tiancheng chuckled. "Or is it that your police station can’t even keep an eye on one person? To be this useless... if you ask me, you might as well get some new people in here."
After speaking, Zhou Tiancheng snorted coldly. ’Stupid old man. So what if this is your turf? Big deal!’
"Zhou Tiancheng!" Wang Jiawei was fuming. ’So what if his performance metrics have been looking good lately, and his superiors praised him and used him as an example? Has it gone to his head?’
’He’s really getting lawless.’
Zhou Tiancheng raised an eyebrow, stood, and straightened his clothes. "Director Wang, instead of flying into a powerless rage, you should probably think about how you’re going to apologize later."
Wang Jiawei was taken aback. ’Me, apologize?’
’All we did was bring in a suspect. Isn’t that standard procedure?’
’If he’s cleared, we let him go. It’s that simple. Why are they making it out to be such a serious affair?’
Zhou Tiancheng walked to the doorway to wait for Jiang Li and the others, then glanced down at his phone.
’It’s been a while. The mayor should be arriving soon.’
Jiang Li and Yu Huannian rushed over, bringing Miao Jiangling with them.
Miao Jiangling still couldn’t quite process what had happened on the way here. ’How on earth did Jiang Li and her group end up following me?’
And she hadn’t noticed a single thing out of place the entire time.
Miao Jiangling was currently tied up tightly and tossed in the back seat. Jiang Li tilted her head, looking at her.
"Miao Jiangling, what exactly have you people done to Xiao Ji all these years!"
Jiang Li stared at Miao Jiangling, her expression devoid of the courtesy she had shown her before.
Miao Jiangling looked at Jiang Li and snorted coldly. She hadn’t expected Jiang Li to go to such lengths for someone who was practically a stranger to her.
"Jiang Li, how long have you even known Miao Anji? You have no idea what kind of person he really is. Why bother?"
"Just let me go, and I’ll tell you the kid’s secrets. How about it?"
Jiang Li gave Miao Jiangling a cold look. "Then I have no interest in knowing."
"Jiang Li! Miao Anji dares to plot against me, the very relative who raised him! Aren’t you afraid that damn brat will turn around and bite you one day?"
Agitated, Miao Jiangling’s face flushed as she glared at Jiang Li.
"He calls me Sister. That makes him my brother. As for anything else, you don’t need to concern yourself. You should be more worried about how much longer you have to live."
Jiang Li retracted her gaze. ’Everyone has secrets. Cherishing the present is more important than anything.’
"Bah! I have no idea why that little bastard Miao Anji is so devoted to you. Then again, he’s just a monster we kept locked in a bug-infested den since he was a child."
"You gave him a few square meals, and he’s still grateful for it. It seems he didn’t eat enough bugs as a child... Urk!"
Miao Jiangling felt a hand tighten around her neck. Her eyes bulged as she stared in shock at Jiang Li.
Jiang Li narrowed her eyes at Miao Jiangling. "What a coincidence. I’m a monster, too."
Jiang Li’s expression shifted, and she gave a light, airy laugh. "Oh, so you people like to eat bugs. Tsk, and Xiao Ji never told me."
"Otherwise... I would have made sure to give Granny a proper welcome."
Miao Jiangling stared at Jiang Li in terror as a terrible premonition washed over her.
Jiang Li glanced outside. "Lu Xingye, pull over for a second."
Lu Xingye pulled the car over. He had overheard their conversation, and the thought of the well-behaved Miao Anji being so cruelly abused as a child made his own chest tighten with anger.
He didn’t get out, simply parking on the roadside and watching Jiang Li haul Miao Jiangling from the car. ’She’s probably just going to teach her a lesson,’ he thought.
That is, until Jiang Li started dragging Miao Jiangling toward a wooden outhouse...
"Jiang Li, are you insane? Let go of me!"
Jiang Li sneered. "Don’t you love eating bugs? I’ll let you eat your fill before you die!"
Jiang Li shoved the woman’s face directly into a nest of bugs near the corner of the wall.
Alarmed, Lu Xingye jumped out of the car. He took two steps forward, then hesitated, figuring Jiang Li probably knew what she was doing.
Wu Ming grimaced at the scene, ultimately pulling out her phone to distract herself. Otherwise, she was afraid she’d lose her appetite for dinner.
Ten minutes later, Jiang Li emerged, dragging a half-dead Miao Jiangling behind her.
Jiang Li tossed the woman on the ground and looked at Lu Xingye. "Call the police. Tell them to come get her."
’Don’t want to get the car dirty.’
Lu Xingye hastily pulled out his phone and called the police. A short while later, a police car arrived.
Wang Jiawei had even come personally. He looked at the old woman lying on the ground, then back at Jiang Li’s group.
"If you wanted to clear his name, you could have at least found a believable scapegoat."
’How could this old lady’s build possibly match the person on the surveillance footage? And did she fall into a cesspit? The stench is awful!’
Jiang Li looked at Wang Jiawei, displeased. "Director Wang, I don’t believe we have any grudge against you, do we? You haven’t investigated or asked a single thing. Will you only be satisfied once you’ve forced my brother to confess to a crime he didn’t commit?"
Wang Jiawei reacted like a cat whose tail had just been stepped on, instantly flying into a rage.
"What nonsense are you spouting! I’m just sticking to the facts! The murderer on the surveillance footage was clearly a young man. How could it possibly be an old woman!"
Jiang Li was internally speechless. ’Explaining things really isn’t my strong suit.’
Lu Xingye stepped forward. "Director Wang, they’re from Miaojiang. They specialize in Gu Technique. They can control people and create illusions. We’ve encountered this before. Everything you saw was a fake-out, deliberately created by Miao Jiangling."
"The person who appeared on camera was likely just a random man with a build similar to Xiao Ji’s, who Miao Jiangling was controlling..."
Wang Jiawei put a hand to his forehead, cutting Lu Xingye off. "Stop, stop, stop. What are you even talking about? Gu Technique? And I suppose you fight demons and slay monsters, too? This is absurd. Utter nonsense!"
’Are these people nuts? What century are we in? He’s a police officer, and he actually believes this stuff.’
Miao Jiangling, who had been so nauseated she’d vomited nothing but bitter bile, looked up when she heard Wang Jiawei’s words as if she’d just seen her savior.
"Officer, you have to help me! I don’t know these people at all! They just came up and beat an old woman like me, and—and they’re trying to force me to go to the station and confess to a murder!"
"This is the greatest injustice!"
"Director Wang, we brought the one who filed the report."
At this, Wang Jiawei turned to look at the two trembling men behind him, then shot a look at Jiang Li’s group. "Perfect. A direct, on-the-spot identification. Now let’s see what other absurd theories you can spin!"
"Mr. Sun, you’re the one who filed the report, correct? Take a look. Are these the people you saw?"
Wang Jiawei smiled, looking at Sun Qiming, the man who had called it in.
Sun Qiming’s gaze swept back and forth across the group.
