Chapter 1166 On the Edge of Berserk

"Now is not the time to kill him." Xiao Lin said in a low voice. "Killing him won’t solve the problem. Take out one Wang Zhanting and there’ll be another someone else. Can you guard against that? Wang Zhantian counts as Shao Weihua giving you an explanation already. Right now you don’t have any excuse to kill him."

"So what if I become a murderer?" The killing intent in Hua Qingyi’s eyes flared up at once. Looking at Wang Zhanting’s mocking face, he wanted nothing more than to smash him into pulp.

Xiao Lin took a deep breath. The spike in his hand scraped along the edge of the dagger’s blade and then thrust forward, forcing Hua Qingyi back two or three steps. The spike stabbed straight into the ground right at Hua Qingyi’s heel. "I won’t let you kill him—both for myself and for you."

Looking at Hua Qingyi’s handsome face twisted by rage, Xiao Lin turned around and faced Wang Zhanting. "What good does it do you to provoke him into killing you? You saw with your own eyes how Wang Zhantian died. Haven’t you witnessed that Shao Weihua’s viciousness up close? You sent the video to me—what were you trying to tell me? I won’t let you die. Wouldn’t you have nightmares at night after watching your own blood brother get butchered in front of you? I want you to stay alive—stay alive and watch how I tear all of you apart, and when that time comes, I’ll kill you with my own hands." Xiao Lin’s eyes were lowered as he stared at Wang Zhanting’s stunned face. "I’m not Hua Qingyi. I won’t be goaded by you. You’ll slowly savor the fury of hatred. Now get out of here."

"You’re going to let me go?"

"Yeah. Crawl back to Shao Weihua’s side and be his watchdog."

"You can’t let him go!" A startled shout suddenly came from afar. Right after, a gray blur shot over in an instant. Before anyone could react, Wang Zhanting was slammed to the ground by a heavy weight. A rank, bloody stench rushed up. "You can’t let him go!"

Lao Jiu braced his hands on his thighs. Thank god he’d made it in time. Mouthfuls of cold air tore through his throat, robbing him of the strength to speak. His lungs were spasming violently.

"What are you doing here?" Xiao Lin looked at Lao Jiu, then at Crow. A bad premonition crept up the back of his skull. "What happened?" Without his order, no one would dare take Crow out of Sin City.

Crow’s front claws were pinning down Wang Zhanting’s shoulder. It bared its teeth and flicked its tongue in and out.

"Xia Xue was taken by Robert. You can’t let him go."

Hua Qingyi froze for a second, and so did Xiao Lin. He turned those pitch-black eyes toward Lao Jiu. "Don’t crack this kind of boring joke with me."

"Consort Ling killed the level-seven codename. They’ve already rushed back to Sin City. Xia Xue should’ve been taken away by the Clown."

Xiao Lin just stood there, stunned. Lao Jiu felt that just getting those words out had taken all the courage he had, but Xiao Lin’s reaction was completely beyond his expectations. He looked terrifyingly calm—so calm it was scary.

All of a sudden, a long howl tore out of his throat. That wild black hair stood straight up. In the dark of night, Xiao Lin looked like some ferocious ghost. As his shrill howl rang out, the air around them thinned to the point of suffocation, and the flowing currents started to gather and condense, forming a vortex that coiled around him—spinning faster and faster.

"Shit!" Hua Qingyi shouted. "Lin, calm down!"

Before the words even fell, Lao Jiu already felt like he was about to be sucked in. Crow’s tail shot straight up, every strand of fur standing on end. It leaped away and started backing up step by step.

The airflow around Xiao Lin had become clearly visible. Crow wheeled around and swiped a claw at Wang Zhanting, who was trying to crawl away, then planted itself on all fours, glaring at Xiao Lin with no intention of backing down.

He had never seen anything like this. Wang Zhanting’s terror had gone beyond words. What the hell was this? His eyes were bulging as if they were about to pop out of his skull. He scrambled backward on both hands and feet, and that beast by his side seemed to understand what he wanted to do, driving him back to his original spot every time.

Dammit! he cursed to himself. Of all the people you could’ve touched, you just had to touch Xia Xue. Looks like this old life of mine is about to be cashed in here.

Hua Qingyi threw himself toward the raging Xiao Lin without a second thought. If they just let this go on, once Xiao Lin lost his reason, no one would walk out of here alive. "Crow!" With just himself and Lao Jiu, they’d be shredded before they even got into that wind ring if they tried to knock Xiao Lin out. Only Crow could resonate with Xiao Lin; the same blood flowed in its body.

A low, muffled howl sounded. Crow, which had been standing its ground, suddenly sprang into the wind ring. Strands of blood sprayed out from within the vortex.

Pitch-black pupils met a pair of amber ones. In that instant of distraction, a massive claw came swinging down with terrifying force. Xiao Lin raised his arm to block on instinct, only to find that the pressure didn’t lessen at all. Instead, it pressed down even harder.

"Can it work? Can that guy pull it off?" Lao Jiu muttered to himself as he watched the two figures flicker inside the wind ring.

"I hope so." Hua Qingyi wasn’t sure there was any such possibility either.

"Trying to run?" While he was hesitating, Lao Jiu suddenly roared and shot out. A flash of steel, and Wang Zhanting, who had just started to move, froze on the sand with a scream like a slaughtered pig. Four throwing knives pinned his wrists and ankles in a spread-eagle on the beach.

Crow’s howls grew more and more miserable, and at the same time the wind ring’s speed finally began to slow. In just a few minutes, the figures inside had become clearly visible. Xiao Lin’s upper body was bare, and the last scene Hua Qingyi saw was Crow mustering all its strength to rake a claw across Xiao Lin’s head.

Bang! Before Xiao Lin hit the ground, Hua Qingyi caught him. He turned to look at Crow. The poor big guy was covered in torn wounds, with barely any of its thick fur left. It was sprawled there like half its life had been beaten out of it, while Xiao Lin in his arms didn’t have a single scratch.

"You really are considerate of him—you didn’t even unsheathe your claws."

Lao Jiu let out a breath and drove his fist straight into Wang Zhanting’s head. This guy just radiated that kind of annoying aura.

"We’re still a ways off from Sin City. I can’t haul all three of these guys by myself; you’re helping." Lao Jiu shouted to Hua Qingyi, his reddened eyes flashing.

"You’re afraid I’ll run?" Seeing right through Lao Jiu’s intent, Hua Qingyi gave a helpless laugh, hefted Xiao Lin over his shoulder, then looked back at Crow and walked over. "Wang Zhanting’s yours. He’s not safe with me."

A man over his shoulder, a wolf in his arms—the sight of that kind of load-bearing march was enough to make your scalp crawl. Luckily this was an undeveloped stretch of coastline. Otherwise the cops would be on them in no time.

Once they left the coast, a car was parked by the roadside. Using the signal from Lao Jiu’s phone, Yelü Shou had found them. He was already considering whether he should have Xiao Lin carry a tracker too. The two of them couldn’t always be together, and taking Crow out was way too eye-catching.

"Lin, he okay?"

"He went berserk." Hua Qingyi summed it up in three words. Yelü Shou let out an understanding "ah." This outcome had been within expectations, but the fact that no one had died was a bit of a surprise.
