Chapter 1176 Counterattack! Escape! (2)

"Maybe in your next life. This isn’t something you can use yet. Without the skill to shoot a leaf off a tree a hundred steps away, this thing in your hands is basically a useless piece of junk."

The classic combo of disdain plus contempt, with a side of mockery, made Murong Lengyue’s eyes round with fury. She wished she could swallow this hateful man alive, bones and all.

"Ah, well, I gotta admit, for now at least, it does look pretty impressive." Xiao Lin added, then glanced at the corpse on the ground, and at his own legs, which were trembling uncontrollably. He didn’t even have the strength to stand up anymore.

"What good is ’impressive’ going to do us? This is just the beginning." Once the excitement faded, reality crawled back into her head. Even though Xiao Lin spoke lightly, Murong Lengyue knew he was only trying to comfort her. Just making it through these measly ten-odd minutes would already be pushing a spent bow to its limit. "Damn it, what the hell are Xiao Yue and the others doing!" Murong Lengyue cursed viciously in her heart. "Usually they stick to me like ghosts, and now? Not a single one shows up. Damn it, damn it!"

"Miss, if you keep yelling like that, I’m really going to start wondering if we’re doing a live broadcast of the Murong Family’s dignified Family Head secretly having a second personality. That would be explosive news."

"You..."

"Hehe! Miss, right now we can only rely on you. Could you please be quiet for a bit? I need time to recover some strength. Can I trouble you to shut your mouth temporarily? If possible, also keep an eye on what’s going on outside. If you don’t want to die here, do as I say."

"Oh!" Watching Xiao Lin find a corner and sit cross-legged, his eyes closing tight as he shut her out, like he’d completely entered his own world, she didn’t even get the chance to ask what exactly she was supposed to do.

Feeling along the wall, she dragged the corpse to the side and propped it against the wall. If a passing Assassin saw it, they’d just walk a circle around the room. She wanted to find something to block the door with, but when she realized she didn’t have the strength to drag any large object at all, she plopped down angrily on a pile of junk and yanked at her own hair in frustration.

Without Xiao Lin around to bicker with her, time crawled by even slower. She had no idea when another wave of Assassins would rush in. Her fingers clenched tightly around the jammed gun as she faced the yawning doorway. Her heart twisted into knots.

After more than a minute, wisps of bluish smoke began to rise from Xiao Lin’s body. His weak breathing gradually steadied; his face was still pale, but no fresh blood was seeping from that black hole of a gunshot wound anymore. Murong Lengyue stared in amazement, hand clapped over her mouth. She didn’t cry out—instead she wished he would hurry up and wake. With her hearing, she could clearly pick up the rustling of footsteps, and from the chaotic rhythm she could tell quite a few people were coming up. Saying she wasn’t scared would be a blatant lie.

Suddenly, Xiao Lin moved in the corner. Then his limp body pushed itself upright. A strange flush climbed his deathly pale face. He opened his sharp eyes, took a deep breath, and walked toward Murong Lengyue.

"Y-you, you, you’re okay now?"

"At best I can hold out for half an hour. But that’s more than enough for us to fight our way out!" The corners of his lips hooked up in a confident smile. Just by listening, he could tell there weren’t many among the Assassins coming up who counted as real middle-tier threats.

"Don’t push yourself too hard!"

Xiao Lin casually stripped off his shirt. His solid muscles were laid bare, the even lines of his body like a perfect piece of art standing in front of Murong Lengyue, forming a stark contrast with that delicate, handsome face of his.

"Uh! Even if you’re planning to strike back, you don’t have to take your clothes off, right? I admit your body is flawless, but a perfect body won’t scare them to death."

Xiao Lin raised a brow and looked at Murong Lengyue like she was an idiot. "If you want a total counterattack, you have to reduce noise as much as possible."

Murong Lengyue shook her head, completely clueless as to what Xiao Lin meant. "I don’t get it!"

"I’m not some fighting expert; how am I supposed to understand all that guy stuff you’re talking about? Besides, I rely on my brain, not my limbs."

"Wow, you really are hopelessly un-cute." Xiao Lin tore his shirt into strips and wrapped them around his feet. "So, Miss, please use that brain of yours to lead us out. Useless brawny guys like us with simple minds and developed limbs apparently don’t have much of a role here." When he finished, Xiao Lin hopped a couple of times. His feet, now wrapped thickly in cloth, landed almost soundlessly. Only then did he nod in satisfaction. But when he turned back, he saw Murong Lengyue’s eyes practically shooting flames, and he couldn’t help but chuckle. "Women really are petty."

He picked up the pistols lying beside the three corpses on the floor, tossed two to Murong Lengyue, and kept one for himself. "Hold onto those. Your marksmanship is more reliable than your brain. But remember to save some ammo. Don’t shoot unless it’s absolutely necessary, got it?"

"Will it kill you not to insult me?"

"No."

"You... How did I not know you had this kind of ability?"

"Ah, were you about to say you’ve fallen even more in love with me?" Xiao Lin winked at Murong Lengyue, and before she could react at all, he scooped her up into his arms.

"Ah... what are you doing..." This sudden move made Xia Xue Xue Xue XueXueXueXue Murong Lengyue let out a low cry despite herself, her voice thick with shyness and tension, and her earlier anger was instantly blown clean out of the sky.

"Nonsense, obviously I’m carrying you. Can’t you tell?"

"Of course I know you’re carrying me. But why? WHY?"

"I’m giving you my back. Watch it carefully for me, and notify me the second anything happens."

"You mean, like comrades-in-arms?" Feeling Xiao Lin hook his thigh up hard, rubbing right against a certain spot, her whole face burned, and she couldn’t even get the last few words out.

"What are you blushing about?"

"Ah! Nothing!" Murong Lengyue hurriedly wrapped her arms around Xiao Lin’s neck, both shy and annoyed. Did this guy’s head only have Xia Xue in it, and no concept of men and women when it came to anyone else? Pressed together this tightly, never mind how suggestive the pose looked, chest pressed to chest, Murong Lengyue felt a wave of heat all over her body.

But Xiao Lin had no time to savor the softness against his chest. He shifted slightly, and when he felt there was no major hindrance, he no longer hesitated. The spikes in his hands began to spin rapidly and slipped out in silence.

He moved carefully down the stairs, level by level. Within the two floors below, Xiao Lin didn’t spot any moving silhouettes, but on the third floor down, his pitch-black, razor-sharp eyes keenly caught a dark figure ahead, crouched and inching forward with full concentration.

Though adjusting his breathing could temporarily restore his stamina to a peak state, that "peak" came at a price. His master had warned him more than once: unless it was an absolutely extraordinary situation, he must never use this kind of Evil Arts. Once he lost this borrowed power, the aftereffects could be extremely dangerous.

Only right now his whole body was brimming with power. Even though he knew that once this force faded, the best outcome would be a long period of weakness, the sensation of strength after the pain still made his whole body feel wonderful. He moved faster and more nimbly; with cloth wrapped around his feet, he glided forward like a ghost of the night—silent yet swift.

The Assassin ahead, bent low and creeping forward step by step, suddenly felt a chill wind at his back. Shocked, he whipped his head around, his pistol turning with his body.

But just as his head started to turn, there was a soft thud. Xiao Lin’s spike lashed up viciously, the sharp tip thrusting into the Assassin’s throat and exiting from the back of his skull. Because the speed was too fast and the force too great, the gleaming metal didn’t even pick up a single bead of blood.

Xiao Lin’s expression didn’t change in the slightest. One hand pressed down on the man’s head as he slowly drew the spike back out, while his eyes continued to sweep the floor. After confirming no one else was there, Xiao Lin moved toward the stairwell. Just as he appeared at the landing, an Assassin from downstairs appeared at his own stairwell entrance, about to come up.

Both froze for a split second, but even in that brief moment of surprise, Xiao Lin’s feet never stopped. His whole body suddenly rose, and in midair he spun through a rapid one-eighty. As he turned upside down over the man’s head, spike gripped tight in his hand, the other man lifted his head slightly, a hint of confusion on his face. With a cruel, cold smile tugging at his lips, Xiao Lin drove the spike straight down. The sharp tip plunged into the man’s forehead, nearly half the spike’s length buried in his skull. Dead on the spot!

Xiao Lin’s twisting body didn’t pause for even a heartbeat. The instant his strike landed, both his hands yanked the spike free, and he dropped lightly to the ground. Even with a living person clinging to his chest, it didn’t affect that fierce attack in the slightest. The backflip and spin were still flawless—filled with a kind of gorgeous beauty and ruthless cruelty!

He straightened up quickly, one hand reaching out to steady the corpse that was about to collapse, quietly sweeping his gaze across the floor.

Murong Lengyue’s hands clung to Xiao Lin’s neck. After trying one attack herself, she stopped letting her thoughts run wild on useless things and instead focused her eyes on watching Xiao Lin’s back. There was a strange feeling of pride and excitement—this kind of man would actually entrust his back to someone like her, who had zero experience. Did that mean he kind of trusted her too?

"Answer me, am I the first woman you’ve ever given your back to?" The silence on the floor was unnerving. In the pitch-darkness, Murong Lengyue felt her eyes grow tired, unable to pierce the shadows. She tightened her grip around Xiao Lin’s neck and clamped her legs more tightly around his waist.

"Such a pointless question."

"Just answer me. It’s important to me."

"Yeah."

"Not even Xia Xue?" Murong Lengyue refused to let it go. As Xiao Lin circled the floor on his sweep, she moved with him, her lips brushing his earlobe. That spot was sensitive on most people, and she figured Xiao Lin probably wasn’t an exception. She "accidentally" brushed against it now and then as she spoke.

"Are you trying to get us killed?" Xiao Lin cursed, drawing a soft laugh from Murong Lengyue.

"So you’re not completely numb after all."

"Quit messing around." This time Xiao Lin was clearly displeased, and Murong Lengyue put away her mischievous thoughts. She really might have gone a bit too far.

"Got it!" (To be continued. If you like this work, you’re welcome to visit Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for it with recommendation tickets and monthly tickets. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
