Chapter 1179: This Person Has No Heart

On this night when many people entered their dreams, some found themselves unable to sleep. Director Meisai anxiously paced back and forth in the confines of his office, the sound of his leather shoes hitting the floor reminiscent of a silenced handgun, so heavy it seemed as though the floor would crack beneath him.

No one likes to be pulled from the brink of sleep for official duty, and neither did Director Meisai. Yet, this damn duty required him to personally lead the team.

"Meisai, pacing back and forth won’t help. Murong Lengyue won’t just appear because of it. Besides, judging from the scene, she should be with Xiao Lin. There are rumors about them appearing to be dating; has the Murong Family Head fallen in love? The male lead is that troublemaker from the police station." Tang, unusually, didn’t head home right after his shift. He was waiting for a lift from Meisai, though it seemed tonight they’d both be spending the night at the office.

"Let me take you home; it’s already late." Meisai paused, remembering Tang’s presence.

"Can you leave?" Tang hopped off the desk. "It’s midnight, the witching hour." Meisai felt a cold sweat break out on his back. "There was a shooting near the night market, with many witnesses. If they plan to escape, they’re likely nearby. You should check the area’s map for possible locations. If someone wants them dead, if one attempt failed, there will surely be a second."

Meisai nodded, exhaling. "Perhaps someone else can tell us something."

"I’ll go with you!"

Miller sat obediently in his temporary holding cell, a space filled with low-level criminals. Here, he acted as though at home, eating and sleeping on schedule, though no one dared to cause trouble or speak with him. Sitting cross-legged against the wall, one could see he wasn’t a typical Italian, something Meisai noticed at first glance; Miller’s style and logic were unlike those of a local.

"Miller!" The guard tapped the bars with his baton, waking prisoners in the middle of the night was rare; the police weren’t that diligent. Miller opened his eyes, seeing Meisai and a child before him. "Come out!"

Meisai scrutinized the man who had taken Wang Weibo’s spot, silent as a log. "Here’s your chance."

"I won’t say anything. In six hours, if you have no proof, you must release me."

To someone already inside for over thirty hours, six hours wasn’t long; a nap could make it pass quickly.

"Really? What if I told you this is news from two days ago and now there’s new evidence, extending those six hours?" Meisai tapped the table, but Miller’s expression remained unchanged, a tough nut to crack, resistant to police tactics.

After an awkward silence, Meisai handed Miller a cigarette. "Your boss did something putting all of Palermo in crisis. Do you think you’ll just walk out of here? He’s overwhelmed now." His blunt remark caught Miller off guard. "Ah, forgot you’re in here, cut off. Didn’t your men sneak news to you? No wonder, considering the rumors of you usurping your boss. You killed Wang Weibo, right?"

"If so, show the evidence. Psychological games won’t work with me. Robert’s actions are out of my control. Arrest me if you have proof or release me when time’s up."

"I see, nothing to discuss then. But know your boss went crazy, targeting Murong Lengyue. Now the whole world, not just I, want him. Pray Murong Lengyue remains unharmed; if anything happens to her, many will take down Robert even before Xiao Lin gets involved."

"Murong Lengyue?"

"Ah, finally a reaction," Meisai chuckled. "Yes, the Murong Family Head." He noted Miller’s surprised, confused look. "Surprised? So am I. Thought his target was Xiao Lin, but Robert aimed higher, attempting to kill Murong Lengyue. Just got reports of a large explosion at a construction site near the night market. Victims are unknown, bodies shredded beyond recognition, requiring DNA to ID. Should Murong Lengyue be among them, it’ll be chaos."

"What do you want from me? This won’t implicate me. Robert killed them, not me."

"Well, people in the club died, no matter how cleanly you acted, traces remain, right?"

"Being a state’s witness isn’t feasible. Moreover, do you think the police can outpace assassins, Director Meisai? I don’t have such faith in you."

A dismissive grin irked Meisai. "Take him back."

Miller was pulled up to leave, giving Meisai a nod. "Thanks for the smoke!"

Tang dropped from a vent. "This person has no heart!"

"Huh?" Meisai was unperturbed by Tang’s presence but puzzled by his sudden words.

"I peeked into his soul; there’s nothing there. I saw nothing."

"Can you check his files? This man isn’t simple; he’s more capable than Robert. Yet, why hide under him for so long?"

"I’ll try! I’ve been watched closely." Tang hadn’t used a computer in ages, being under cyber-surveillance as a high-priority criminal. "Restarting will take a day or two, shaking off pests is tricky."

"What’ve you done to get monitored?"

"Classified!" (To be continued. If you enjoy this work, please visit Qidian (qidian.com) to contribute recommendations or monthly votes; your support is my greatest motivation.)
