SSS Primeval Devourer: Every Path I Devour Becomes Mine

Chapter 45: The First Measure Academy Summons

Sponsored

The First Measure Academy changed the western gate before it wrote the summons.

Workers removed the sponsor-cabinet lock at sunrise, carried it into the public court, and laid it beside the service key Nima had recovered. The new lock required one Academy key from inside and another from the gate watch. No private plate could open it alone.

Vhar watched from the lower steps while food, sleep, and his completed circulation restored sixteen Uvar. The crossed blades remained on his back, and the old stone beneath his boots carried his controlled weight without complaint.

Elara arrived carrying breakfast in two paper wraps. She gave one to Nima, who had spent the night in a guarded candidate room rather than the lower-branch dormitory where the collection order expected to find her.

"They moved my bed before they moved my name," Nima said.

"Beds are heavier," Vhar replied.

"It was a blanket and one box."

"A formidable box."

Nima smiled around the first bite. Elara gave Vhar a long, unimpressed look.

"Her room has one door, one window, and two guards who know she may leave," Elara said. "That last part required repeating."

They had collected Nima’s belongings from the lower dormitory at first light. One blanket, two Academy shirts, a cracked wash bowl, three copied lesson sheets, and a wooden meal box had filled less than half a handcart.

The private collection notice had already been tied around her old door handle.

Nima had stopped in the corridor when she saw it. "They prepared this before the team entered the practice court."

Elara read the notice without touching its wax. "They expected to empty your room whether you agreed or not."

Two lower-branch students watched while Nima took the meal box herself. When one asked whether she would return, Nima looked at the collection notice. "The Academy may keep my place or remove it. Either way, I choose my next road."

Vhar carried the handcart behind them with enough control that the cracked bowl never clicked against the box. Elara carried nothing until they reached the guarded room, where she took the blanket and checked the window latch before allowing anyone to call the space protected.

One guard tried to keep Nima inside until House Talvern answered the summons. Elara asked whether the Academy meant to protect a witness or store one, while Nima requested the answer under his name. By breakfast, the record let Nima leave with either guard, approve visitors, and return without sponsor permission.

The examiner from the comparison yard crossed the court with the damaged fixed-circle board under one arm. He placed it beside the old lock rather than hiding it in storage.

"The board belongs in the summons record," he said. "The protected position would have closed behind Nima after the second carriage, and I allowed the station to begin without asking why."

Nima lowered her food. "Are you saying that because the collectors failed?"

"No. I sealed the same statement yesterday before they entered. Their failure makes the consequence harder to avoid, but it does not improve my decision."

She considered him, then resumed eating. His statement placed the broken board beside her name instead of blaming her for the closing lane.

Two Academy guards brought the four restrained collectors through the eastern passage. Their House Talvern coats, recovery tokens, cable reels, hooks, net weights, sealed order, replacement token, and sponsor service key traveled on a separate evidence cart where everyone could see the distance between people and objects.

The lead collector walked without resistance. "House Talvern will dispute Academy custody over contracted recovery staff."

"It may do so after receiving the summons," the evidence officer said. "Until then, you entered Academy ground with a private key, attempted removal without consent, and deployed restraints against candidates and a registered witness."

"The order carried sponsor authority."

Nima looked at the old lock on the stone. "So did the key, but the gate belongs to the Academy."

The collector had no answer that changed either object.

At second bell, the record officer brought the summons into the public court. It was one sheet of heavy paper fixed between two thin iron plates so neither rain nor a hurried hand could destroy the text without leaving evidence.

He did not read a speech. He named the actions the paper required while workers performed them.

"The House must send an accountable representative to answer for the sponsored comparison, joined source offer, substituted meter route, and failed private collection."

A worker hammered the upper plate into the public notice frame.

BANG!

"The four living collectors remain in Academy custody until that answer is received or lawful transfer is established."

The guards moved them through the inner evidence gate and locked it after the last person crossed.

CLANG!

"Every witness named in the comparison, transfer, collapse, and collection records receives protected access to the House-response route. No sponsor representative may alter their room, meals, candidate standing, or movement before the Academy answers the delivered evidence."

The lower records worker carried out the failed-body collection roster. Elara’s name occupied one iron strip near the top; Nima’s had been added beneath it in fresh black ink.

The worker looked at both women. "The summons removes you from this route, but it does not place either of you under another House or private claimant. Academy standing remains separately reviewable."

"Remove the strips," Elara said.

The worker released the retaining pins. Elara’s iron name strip came free first. Nima’s paper addition followed, leaving two empty spaces in a roster that had expected their bodies to remain available.

Neither woman handed her name to Vhar.

The evidence officer sealed both removed entries inside the summons packet as proof of what had changed.

The record officer turned to Elara. "Without House recovery protection, your sponsored equipment access ends today. Academy practice equipment remains available under ordinary candidate rules."

"So I return the shield I already returned."

"Correct."

"Your generosity is breathtaking."

Nima choked on a laugh. Even the examiner looked away before his expression betrayed him.

The officer let the laughter pass. Elara rested one empty hand where the sponsor token had once hung, then faced him again without asking anyone to soften the answer.

"What happens to my candidate place?" Elara asked.

"The summons prevents removal before House Talvern answers, but it does not guarantee admission afterward. Your comparison result will be judged without the failed-body route controlling it."

"My candidate place can still be denied."

"Yes, but not by disappearing into a private assessment first."

Elara accepted the distinction because it preserved uncertainty without surrendering her body. "Put that beside the roster removal. I don’t want protection rewritten as a victory I haven’t earned."

The record officer added her words to the public copy. Nima leaned close enough to read them and then asked for the same sentence beneath her own strip.

Separate seals ensured neither woman’s standing could be hidden inside the other’s result.

An Academy courier waited beside the notice frame with a duplicate summons under chain custody. The record officer showed both sides to Elara, Nima, Vhar, and the comparison examiner, then locked it inside a leather case with two numbered seals.

"The courier travels to the public House Talvern receiving gate," he said. "A gate representative must break neither seal, mark receipt on the exterior plate, and return the lower counterstrip."

Elara folded her empty breakfast wrap. "How long before silence becomes refusal?"

"The deadline is tomorrow at second bell. The receipt proves delivery today; House Talvern must send an answer or leave the summons unanswered."

Whatever House Talvern chose to answer would come tomorrow, but the receipt already proved the Academy had delivered an enforceable obligation instead of leaving everyone beneath an unanswered threat.

The courier left through the newly keyed western gate. An Academy guard accompanied the case only as far as public jurisdiction required, while a second remained behind so witness protection did not vanish with the message.

Elara watched the gate close. "You left the source when the gallery fell."

Vhar looked toward the repaired service court, where no stolen tube had been recovered. "Yes."

"Would you make the same choice if the source could never be replaced?"

"The people could not be replaced either."

"That’s a clean answer. You didn’t have ten routes failing at once."

"Someone besides me will need authority over the routes I cannot occupy."

Elara studied him more carefully. "You are not asking for rescue. You are looking for people who can hold a second route."

"You ignored the fixed circle before we had a conversation. I have little evidence that attaching your judgment to mine would work."

"Sensibly observed."

He did not offer her an oath, a power, or a place in a future order. She had defended Nima before receiving any promise from him, and shrinking that choice into recruitment would have made it cheaper.

The courier returned near evening with dust on his boots and the lower counterstrip fixed beneath a fresh exterior mark. Both case seals remained intact.

House Talvern’s receiving gate had accepted delivery.

The record officer matched the counterstrip to the posted summons, pressed the Academy completion seal across them, and entered the receipt time where Elara and Nima could see it.

The examiner who had carried out the broken circle remained until the receipt returned. "If House Talvern answers that the comparison was valid, I will give my statement before yours," he told Nima.

"Why before mine?"

"Because I had authority to stop it, while you had reason to fear refusing."

Nima folded her arms. "You don’t get to answer for what I saw."

"No. I answer for what I failed to do. You answer after me, and nobody gets to use my words to shrink yours."

She considered that more carefully than an apology. "Alright, but I read the final copy before it leaves the room."

"You should."

The summons had not remained a document on an Academy wall. It had crossed the road, reached the House, and returned with proof that silence would now be a choice.

Nima carried her meal box toward the guarded room under her own name. Elara walked beside her without a sponsor token, while the public roster behind them no longer classified either body for private collection.

House Talvern had until tomorrow to answer.

The First Measure Academy had already acted.
