Chapter 44: No One Takes This Line
The collection team arrived while Nima was repairing the strap Elara had returned to her.
Four adults entered through the western gate wearing House Talvern’s branch stitching and recovery tokens. Two pushed cable reels, one carried a net, and the leader held a sealed order.
Vhar stood opposite with Radrazh and Ulqor crossed behind him. Food, sleep, and the lung-return circuit had restored part of his reserve, but he did not reach for either blade.
Elara carried another Academy practice shield. Its ironwood face covered her from shoulder to knee, while yesterday’s bruised arm remained loose at her side.
The lead collector stopped beyond striking distance. "Elara Keldran and Nima Corl are listed for protected recovery after interference with a sponsored body comparison. You will come with us before the Academy review changes your condition."
Nima’s hand froze around the strap. "My condition is that I still have my place."
"Your place is under review, and recovery preserves what remains while the sponsor decides whether continued training is safe."
Elara shifted one foot toward Nima. "Where are you taking her?"
"The order names private assessment under the failed-body collection route."
"That route treats removed students as sponsor material."
The collector kept the order extended, although Nima had not reached for it. "The sponsor takes failed students to a private room, examines them, and decides whether they return."
Nima’s fingers tightened around her strap. "So my place disappears before anyone writes where I went."
The collector held out the order. "You were preserved under the same protection, so you know resistance closes it."
Elara did not take the paper. She looked at the two reels, the folded net, the western gate behind them, and Nima’s unprotected route toward the eastern stairs.
"That gate should require an Academy escort," Vhar said.
The rear collector glanced back. A brass key remained in the outer lock, stamped by the same sponsor cabinet that had joined the comparison and source records.
The leader folded the order against his palm. "Our entry is authorized."
"The key got you into the yard," Elara said, "but Nima hasn’t agreed to leave it."
She turned enough to see Nima without giving the team her back. "The east stair leads to guards, but the first cable will try to close it. Do you want me between you and them, or do you want another route?"
Nima studied the court instead of accepting the safest-sounding answer. "Between us, but keep me close enough to move when you do, because I won’t stand in another square while people decide whether I count."
"Stay at my right shoulder, and if I lose the shield, take the stair instead of coming back for me."
"You came back for me yesterday."
"I moved with you before, but today you may have to keep moving without me."
Nima tied the repaired strap around her wrist. Fear remained in both hands, although it no longer chose where her feet stood.
"Nima," she said, "do you want to go?"
The girl swallowed. Her eyes moved across four collectors before returning to Elara. "No. If I refuse, they can remove my bed."
"They are trying to remove more than that."
The leader’s patience thinned. "Step aside, or your sponsor protection ends here."
Elara brought the shield up. "It ended when you brought cables for a girl who said no."
The two reel carriers pulled their release handles.
CLACK!
Steel cables shot across the court at waist height. One carried three hooked loops toward Elara and Nima. The second angled past them toward Vhar, meant to restrain the strongest witness before the collection closed.
Vhar let Elara choose first.
She did not retreat toward Nima.
She advanced into the main cable, and the first hook struck her shield rim.
CLANG!
Elara turned the ironwood face, caught the second loop against its rear brace, and stepped across the third before it could wrap her ankle. The reel carriers pulled together, expecting the line to drag her into a fixed defense.
Elara gave them the shield.
Its lower edge hit the stone. She rolled the cable around the steel rim, planted one foot behind it, and changed the direction of their combined pull. Both collectors staggered toward each other because their reels now fought through the same moving anchor.
"Nima, left stair," Elara said. "Stay inside my shoulder."
Nima moved, though fear shortened her first step.
The net carrier threw across the exit.
The weighted mesh opened above them. Elara drove her shield upward before it settled, caught the center cord, and continued forward with the net spread over the ironwood face. Its corner weights struck stone on either side.
BANG!
BANG!
She had turned a falling restraint into a roof.
Nima ducked beneath it and reached the first stair.
The leader came around the shield with a hooked pole aimed at Elara’s injured arm. She released one hand from the grip, let the hook pass beside her ribs, and trapped the shaft between her forearm and shield edge.
"That arm was recorded damaged," he said.
"It still moves."
Elara stepped through him.
Her shoulder drove into his chest while the shield crossed his hips.
BANG!
She turned the collision sideways, lifted him from his stance, and dropped him onto the net his own team had thrown.
THUD!
The hooked pole left his hand.
Across the court, the secondary cable reached Vhar.
He caught it with his left hand before its restraint loops opened. The reel bit, reversed, and tried to drag him toward the western gate.
Vhar’s heels settled into the court, and the cable lost every fraction of slack between his fist and the reel. He kept his attention on the lane aimed at him while Elara’s fight remained hers.
He walked backward along the cable’s own route.
The reel carriage skidded toward him. Its rear anchors tore grooves through the court while the carrier abandoned the handle and tried to flee.
Vhar hauled the cable sharply down and back. The line went rigid, and the reversed load struck the reel axle before its carrier could release the brake.
CRACK!
The reel axle collapsed inside its housing. Cable tension died, the restraint loops struck empty stone, and the secondary lane ceased functioning without touching anyone behind it.
Sixteen Uvar had entered the intervention. Vhar remained beside the ruined reel.
The main line still belonged to Elara.
One collector drew a short cudgel and rushed Nima on the stairs. Nima saw him and looked toward Elara. She did not wait to become cargo. She looped her repaired strap around the stair rail, caught the loose cable Elara had redirected, and kicked it under the man’s forward boot.
His own teammate pulled.
The cable snapped tight behind his ankle.
He fell hard enough to lose the cudgel.
Elara reached him before he could rise. Her shield edge pinned his sleeve and wrist to the stair without crushing the bones beneath them.
"Stay down," she said. "You have already mistaken movement for permission once."
The two reel carriers tried to separate. Elara pulled the cable wrapped around her shield, shortening both routes until their equipment drew them back toward the court’s center. She struck one reel handle with the shield rim.
CRACK!
The wooden grip split. Its locking tooth dropped into the wheel, stopping the first carrier in place. She rotated, used the trapped reel as a pivot, and drove the shield face into the second carriage.
BANG!
It overturned. The remaining cable spilled harmlessly across the stone.
The lead collector tore free of the net and reached beneath his coat.
Elara planted one foot on the hidden hand before it found whatever waited there. She did not crush it. She increased pressure until his fingers opened around a second sealed collection token.
"That authorizes a replacement team," he said through his teeth.
"Leave it where the guards can read how early you expected to need one."
Academy guards entered through the eastern stairs with the evidence officer behind them. They found one destroyed secondary reel, one overturned main carriage, three collectors restrained by their own equipment, and Elara standing over the fourth.
The guard at the front looked from the House tokens to Nima. "Did either named student consent to removal?"
"Neither of us consented," Nima said. Her voice shook, yet she did not hide behind Elara to give the answer.
"Did Vhar Blackvein strike a collector?"
"He did not," Elara replied. "He wrecked his own threat and stayed out of my fight."
Vhar glanced at the collapsed reel. "It was not thriving."
Nima made a breathless sound that might have become laughter if the danger were farther away.
The guards collected every cudgel, hook, token, and release key before cutting nobody free. Each collector received a choice between surrendering under Academy custody or remaining physically bound while the public evidence officer read the order aloud.
The leader looked at Elara’s shield, Nima’s tightened strap, and Vhar beside the ruined reel.
"We surrender."
The other three answered separately. Guards replaced the cables with Academy restraints, locked both gates, and carried the order to the evidence room.
The court quieted around unwinding cable. One broken reel clicked to a stop, the last hook settled against stone, and none of the four collectors had a free hand left to reach for another order.
Nima walked to the western gate and pulled the brass service key from its lock. Her handprint did not authorize evidence handling, so she carried it between two open palms until the evidence officer received it.
"This let them enter after the witness route changed," she said. "Please put my name beside where it was found, but don’t write that I opened anything."
The officer looked briefly surprised, then gave Nima the exact wording before she recorded it. "Found in the western service lock and transferred untouched by Nima Corl."
"Yes."
Elara checked each fallen collector. None had been struck after surrender, and every restraint left hands visible.
Elara lowered the shield only after Nima stood beyond every collector. The bruised arm trembled once from ordinary strain, although her grip did not fail.
"Your sponsor protection is gone," Nima said.
"I know, but it stopped protecting me when they brought cables."
"What do you have now?"
Elara looked at the surrendered team, the Academy witnesses, and the girl who had helped take the line instead of waiting behind it.
"Witnesses, and a result they cannot call passive failure."
She returned the practice shield to its rack even though the court around it remained covered in House Talvern cable. The guards held four collectors, their order, and the brass entry key for the evidence room.
