"So that’s how it is. Then it looks like this Director Zhang really is a piece of crap."

"Tell me about it. Everyone in the company is pissed at him but doesn’t dare say anything. And I heard a lot of people in Finance who wouldn’t listen to him got screwed over by him and straight-up kicked out of the company. You know how hard it is to find a job now. Who knows how many people Director Zhang has ruined doing this."

Bai Lan obviously held a huge grudge against Director Zhang; her eyes were full of anger as she spoke.

"Alright, alright, let’s not bring up this annoying stuff. I was just asking casually. Since he’s that kind of person, I won’t go to the Finance Department then."

Murong Hai seized the chance to change the subject, hoping Bai Lan wouldn’t keep going.

"What’s so great about the Finance Department anyway? If you ask me, with how handsome you are, it’d be a shame if you didn’t come to our Design Department. As long as you’re willing, I guarantee you’ll make a name for yourself there. I can’t promise anything else, but at the very least you’ll be able to buy an apartment within a year."

Hearing this, Murong Hai was also shocked.

He knew Xu Group’s benefits and pay were really good, but buying an apartment within a year—that sounded a bit over the top.

Housing prices in the capital were skyrocketing. Even before, Murong Hai wouldn’t have dared guarantee he could buy a place within a year.

But from what Bai Lan was saying, this seemed like no big deal to them, just everyday life.

That alone showed just how good the pay and benefits at Xu Group really were, and also explained why so many people were breaking their heads trying to get in.

"Thanks for telling me all this. I’ll think about your Design Department. But right now I’m just a security team leader, still a long way from you guys."

When Murong Hai said this, there was a hint of sadness in his eyes that easily stirred people’s sympathy.

Bai Lan, standing next to him, clearly noticed it. A man as handsome as Murong Hai, plus that slightly brooding look, instantly captured her girlish heart.

"Can we exchange contact info? I’d like to be friends with you." Bai Lan said shyly.

What she said took Murong Hai by surprise, but from the look in her eyes he already understood.

Unless something unexpected happened, this girl had definitely taken a liking to him—and from the looks of it, it was love at first sight.

To be honest, Murong Hai also had a good impression of Bai Lan. He’d seen plenty of pretty girls, but none had ever given him this sense of closeness the way she did.

"Sure!" he said, and then exchanged contact information with Bai Lan.

All in all, Murong Hai was very satisfied with this meal. He’d already dug up what he wanted; next he needed to hurry back and report to Xu Ke.

Xu Ke had been busy these past few days dealing with Wang Lishan, and Murong Hai hadn’t seen him for several days now.

"Xu Ke, where are you right now? I’ve got something." Murong Hai asked in a low voice.

At that moment, Xu Ke was out investigating with Xiao Keyi, but after searching all morning they still hadn’t made any progress.

"What did you find over there? Tell me exactly what’s going on."

Xu Ke was practically ecstatic now; he’d already pinned all his hopes on Murong Hai.

Murong Hai then relayed every single thing Bai Lan had told him to Xu Ke without leaving anything out.

After listening, a countermeasure formed in Xu Ke’s mind almost immediately.

Since this Director Zhang had hidden so deep and no one had suspected him all these years, he must have long been floating on air.

Dealing with cautious people might be a bit tricky for Xu Ke, but when it came to arrogant types like this, he was very confident.

"Ah Hai, check Director Zhang’s daily routine for me. I’ve decided to start with this old fox."

Once he knew the next step of the plan, Murong Hai immediately began digging into Director Zhang.

These past few days, Zhang Qiang and Li Dong had been busy constantly swallowing up Wang Lishan’s turf.

But they had no idea this was all something Wang Lishan had deliberately put on for them.

He had to let those two eat and drink their fill before he could wipe them out in one go.

"Zhang Qiang, aren’t we winning a bit too easily lately? I don’t know why, but I’ve got this bad feeling, like we’re overdoing it."

In just a few days, they’d already swallowed up a lot of Wang Lishan’s territory.

But there was zero reaction from Wang Lishan’s side, as if he didn’t know anything about it.

"You, you just love overthinking. That bastard Wang Lishan is probably busy dealing with Xu Ke right now and doesn’t have time for this. Once he’s done with Xu Ke, that’s when the two of us will take care of him."

Zhang Qiang and Li Dong were still daydreaming about how they’d take down Wang Lishan, not realizing they’d long since become someone else’s prey.

Wang Lishan didn’t take them seriously at all; he was just planning to swat them aside in passing.

From start to finish, Xu Ke never saw those two as any kind of threat either; he was just waiting to finish off Wang Lishan before dealing with them.

On Wang Lishan’s side, his plan had already reached a critical stage.

He and Director Zhang had long been in contact; they were just waiting for him to turn the key people inside the company, and then Wang Lishan’s side could move.

"Old Zhang, you’d better put your heart into this one. Success or failure all comes down to this. We’ve been planning for so many years—we can’t afford any mistakes."

On the phone, Wang Lishan nagged Director Zhang over and over. He was terrified something might go wrong at this final step. He’d been waiting too long for this day.

"Relax, Old Wang. After all these years, you still don’t trust my work? Look at how long we’ve been in this company—has anyone ever suspected our relationship? Isn’t it thanks to that little show I directed back then? Those idiots in the company bought it hook, line, and sinker. They’d never dream that the two of us had already teamed up."

Thinking of his masterpiece from back then, Director Zhang was full of pride. He couldn’t believe he was clever enough to come up with such a flawless plan.

"Everyone knows what’s in Sima Zhao’s heart"—no matter how well Wang Lishan and his people thought they were hiding.

In reality, over the years some people in the company had already started to suspect them; they just didn’t have solid evidence, so they didn’t dare act rashly.

Wang Lishan thought this plan of his was watertight, but in fact plenty of people were watching him from the shadows.

Even though Xu Ke hadn’t made any substantial progress yet, he’d already grasped the key clues.

As soon as Wang Lishan dared to move, Xu Ke would immediately respond.

Xu Group was nowhere near the point where Wang Lishan could call the shots. The Xu Family’s company could only belong to Xu Family members.
