Lu Jihan pressed down hard on Shana. "Calm down, Shana! Don’t get worked up!"

She watched helplessly as they pushed Amu into the operating room. The two heavy doors shut mercilessly in front of her, and time seemed to freeze, not moving an inch for a very long while.

Shana sat blankly on the bench outside the operating room, the muscle under her right eye twitching uncontrollably.

Song Yinyin came over and sat beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder and gently patting it.

Shana wanted to give her a smile, but she couldn’t even lift the corners of her lips. Everything around them was in chaos, her ears flooded with all kinds of sounds—the clatter of metal instruments, doctors and nurses occasionally talking, the beeping of machines, and so on...

The noises drifted near and far, muddled and oppressive, making it unbearable.

She simply covered her ears and curled up on the bench.

No one knew how much time had passed when suddenly a shrill, flatlined sound came from some machine inside the operating room.

Shana heard a sudden burst of commotion, and then a man’s voice shouting loudly, "One, two, three... one, two, three..."

After that came a series of continuous thudding sounds.

Bang—

Bang—

Bang—

Each sound followed the other, like a heavy hammer pounding Shana’s heart.

"What is that?" Shana asked in a daze, even though she more or less guessed what it might be.

"Defibrillation... they’re defibrillating Amu..." Song Yinyin’s throat tightened, and she could hardly go on.

Defibrillation?

The word dropped into Shana’s ears like raindrops hitting an oilcloth umbrella, thudding and splashing everywhere, making her heart clench painfully.

No one knew how much time had passed before the doors of the operating room finally opened. Lu Jihan immediately got up and went to speak with the doctor.

Shana wanted to follow, but Song Yinyin grabbed her firmly.

From a distance, through the crowd, all she could see was Amu’s face beneath the transparent oxygen mask, so deathly pale he barely looked human.

"No! Amu! Don’t... don’t... sob... don’t go..." Shana tried to stay calm, but she simply couldn’t.

Her legs suddenly gave out, and with a thud she dropped to her knees on the floor.

Song Yinyin held her shoulders tightly. Her heart ached just as much as Shana’s, but she was far more clear-headed, clutching Shana hard to keep her from doing anything foolish.

In the end, Amu was still taken out of the ICU, and the corridor felt unbearably empty...

Shana still refused to leave, and Lu Jihan and Song Yinyin had no choice. They could only wait until her emotions eased a little before they used force to take her out of the hospital.

When they walked out of the hospital, the sky outside was oppressively dark.

Thick gray clouds gathered over the northern sky, and the air held that abnormal stillness that comes before a storm.

Shana’s strength was completely gone; she squatted down, curling into a ball.

Later, the wind picked up, and fat raindrops suddenly came crashing down from the sky without warning.

Shana stood there in the rain, silently lifting her face. The gale drove the rain hard against her skin; it stung like lashes from a whip, yet it clearly eased the indescribable torment and anguish in her heart.

In the end, unable to withstand the crushing grief, Shana toppled straight to the ground and fainted.

By the time Shana woke up, President Shi Mai’er had also finished emergency treatment.

Learning that Amu had been gravely wounded and ultimately lost his life in order to protect his daughter, President Shi Mai’er was stricken with grief and remorse.

When father and daughter finally met, thinking of Madam Vera and of Amu, the two of them clung to each other and wept bitterly.

However, compared to Shana, President Shi Mai’er was far stronger.

After all, as the president of a nation, the fate of the entire S Country mattered more to him than his own family.
