Chapter 142 - 59: Lu Zhi’an’s Overnight Visit, Zheng Qi’s Return (Part 2)
Shen Yanzhi’s eyes narrowed. "You’ve got the nerve to ask? My wife spent 1.5 million just to find out where Zheng Qi was."
Lu Zhi’an exclaimed in admiration, "She’s a keeper!"
’But now that I know, there’s no way I can let Jiang Li be the one to pay for this.’
’If it wasn’t for me, Jiang Li wouldn’t have gotten mixed up in this mess, much less wasted all that money.’
He immediately transferred the money to Shen Yanzhi. "Give this back to your wife later."
Shen Yanzhi raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Not bad."
Lu Zhi’an took a sip of water. "If it had been you who paid, I definitely wouldn’t be paying it back."
Shen Yanzhi just smiled without a word, which made Lu Zhi’an’s skin crawl. "Stop smiling. It’s creepy."
Shen Yanzhi was speechless. "Have you had dinner?"
Lu Zhi’an chuckled and shook his head. "Nope."
"I figured you probably hadn’t eaten, so I had some food prepared."
With that, Shen Yanzhi stood up. "Come on, let’s go eat."
The two went to the dining room, where a nutritionist had prepared some barbecue, with a dry pot chicken placed in the center of the table.
Shen Yanzhi asked, "Want a drink?"
Lu Zhi’an nodded. "Let’s drink."
’If he didn’t have a drink, he honestly didn’t know how he was going to get through the night.’
He had been worried sick ever since he saw the address.
He had originally planned to drive over, but before he’d gone even three kilometers, Shen Yanzhi called to say that Zheng Qi would be back tomorrow morning.
After mulling it over at home for a while, he finally decided to go find Shen Yanzhi, only to find the house completely dark, without a soul in sight.
Shen Yanzhi snapped his fingers. Xie Wan retrieved a decanted bottle of red wine and poured a glass for each of them.
Shen Yanzhi waved his hand. "You can go to bed. We don’t need you here."
Xie Wan nodded. "Very well, Mr. Shen."
As soon as Xie Wan left, Lu Zhi’an couldn’t help but ask, "Who was that?"
’She’s good-looking, and she hangs on Shen Yanzhi’s every word.’
’If he didn’t know Shen Yanzhi only had eyes for Jiang Li, he would’ve suspected Xie Wan was his mistress.’
"My private butler."
Lu Zhi’an clicked his tongue. "Sounds expensive."
Shen Yanzhi shook his head. "I wouldn’t know. My wife handles all that."
Lu Zhi’an shuddered. "I get it, you married the woman of your dreams, but do you have to bring up your wife in every other sentence? Are you trying to rub it in that I don’t have one?"
Shen Yanzhi blinked innocently. "But it’s the truth. My wife really does manage all of this."
Shen Yanzhi raised his glass, grinning like the cat that got the cream. "But yeah, I am totally rubbing it in that you don’t have a wife."
Lu Zhi’an clinked his glass against Shen Yanzhi’s and scoffed, "Heh, so what if you have a wife? Have you even confessed your feelings to her?"
Shen Yanzhi downed a large mouthful of wine. "So what if you’ve confessed? Do you have a wife?"
Talk about twisting the knife.
That was it.
Lu Zhi’an was seething, but he couldn’t beat Shen Yanzhi in a fight or a war of words. He muttered sullenly, "The other party has declined to speak with you and has thrown a slipper in your direction."
After saying his piece, he took a sip of wine, and his eyes instantly lit up. "Hey, this wine is pretty good."
Shen Yanzhi raised an eyebrow. "Of course it is. My wife bought it at auction for ten million."
Lu Zhi’an rolled his eyes. "You really can’t go two sentences without bringing up your wife."
"Jealous?" Without waiting for an answer, Shen Yanzhi continued, "If you’re so jealous, go get a wife of your own."
Lu Zhi’an snorted. "You think I don’t want to?"
’I don’t even have a girlfriend. How am I supposed to find a wife?’
’He was already trying so hard to woo Zheng Qi, but she wouldn’t even give him the time of day.’
’Although, things were a little better now. At least he had Zheng Qi’s WeChat, and she would actually reply to his ’good morning,’ ’good afternoon,’ and ’good night’ messages.’
Shen Yanzhi clapped him on the shoulder. "The revolution has not yet succeeded, comrade. You must press on."
Lu Zhi’an pouted and raised his glass. "Tell me something I don’t know."
The two of them chatted idly, drinking and eating, and the time flew by.
By the time they were done, it was already past three in the morning.
Lu Zhi’an was dead drunk, muttering Zheng Qi’s name over and over. Shen Yanzhi couldn’t resist recording a video as evidence he could use for blackmail later.
He helped Lu Zhi’an into bed, and only then did he return to his own room.
Worried that the smell of smoke and alcohol on him might bother Jiang Li, he took another shower.
The moment he lay down, Jiang Li, as if equipped with GPS, rolled right into his arms, making his body go rigid.
He lay there, stiff as a board, for a long moment. Only after making sure he hadn’t woken Jiang Li did Shen Yanzhi finally let out a sigh of relief.
He turned on his side, gathered Jiang Li into his arms, and, by the light of the moon, gently pressed his lips to hers in a fleeting kiss.
"Good night, my love."
