Chapter 143 - 59: Lu Zhi’an’s Overnight Visit, Zheng Qi’s Return (3)
Jiang Li was woken up by a ringing phone. Seeing it was an unknown number, she instinctively wanted to reject the call.
Just as her hand moved to press the reject button, she suddenly remembered—she had arranged for Zheng Qi to be brought back this morning.
She hurriedly answered the phone. "Hello, may I ask who’s calling?"
A man’s cold voice came from the other end of the line. "This is Four Six. She’s been delivered. Open the door and take receipt."
Jiang Li urgently shook Shen Yanzhi awake. "They brought Zheng Qi back."
Shen Yanzhi shot bolt upright, threw off the covers, and jumped out of bed. "I’m on my way."
The time between him getting up and leaving the room couldn’t have been more than five seconds.
Jiang Li was stunned for a moment, then she spoke into the phone, "My husband is on his way. Please wait a moment."
After hanging up, she went to the bathroom to wash up, changed into some loose-fitting clothes, and then headed downstairs.
But when she got downstairs and got a clear look at the person in the living room, Jiang Li’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Compared to the last time Jiang Li had seen her, Zheng Qi looked as if she had been utterly ravaged.
She was covered in injuries, her hair was a mess, and her eyes were hollow and vacant.
She strode over to Zheng Qi’s side. Noticing her trembling, Jiang Li couldn’t help but pull her into an embrace, gently patting her back. "It’s okay, it’s okay now," she soothed. "You’re safe."
Zheng Qi didn’t say a word, her body still trembling uncontrollably.
Jiang Li pressed her lips together, then let go of Zheng Qi and placed her hands on her shoulders. "It’s me, Jiang Li. Do you remember me?"
At these words, Zheng Qi’s vacant eyes finally focused.
Seeing the person standing before her, she threw her arms around Jiang Li and burst into tears.
Shen Yanzhi and Lu Zhi’an stood to one side. Lu Zhi’an’s face was etched with worry, and he was a complete nervous wreck. "What in the world do you think happened to her?"
Shen Yanzhi shot Lu Zhi’an a look. "You’re asking me? How should I know?"
’I went with Lu Zhi’an to pick her up. If he doesn’t know, how could I?’
’But judging by her appearance, she’s definitely been beaten and has suffered a great deal.’
"What if... and this is just a hypothetical, mind you!"
Lu Zhi’an’s eyes were fixed on the weeping Zheng Qi; he didn’t even turn his head. "What about it?"
"If she was... violated... would you..."
Before Shen Yanzhi could finish, Lu Zhi’an immediately cut in, "It doesn’t matter what happened. She’s the only one I love."
His hands at his sides clenched into fists. "If someone really did hurt her, that’s their fault, not Zheng Qi’s."
Shen Yanzhi reached out and patted Lu Zhi’an’s shoulder. "Thinking like that proves you’re a good man, the kind someone could spend a lifetime with."
Lu Zhi’an laughed self-deprecatingly. "Zheng Qi hasn’t even friendzoned me yet, and you’re already beating her to it."
Shen Yanzhi just shook his head and smiled, offering no reply.
Once Zheng Qi had cried her fill, she belatedly realized she was still clinging to Jiang Li.
Slightly embarrassed, she let go, lowered her head, and said awkwardly, "I’m sorry, I lost control for a moment."
Jiang Li shook her head to show she didn’t mind. She tucked a stray strand of hair behind Zheng Qi’s ear and asked softly, "Are you up for telling me what happened these past few days?"
Zheng Qi sniffled. Seemingly unwilling to revisit the memory, she shook her head firmly. "It was nothing. It’s in the past now."
Jiang Li sighed. "Alright. If you don’t want to talk about it, you don’t have to."
She reached out and took Zheng Qi’s hand. "But for now, how about we get something to eat?"
Zheng Qi was about to say no, but her stomach betrayed her with a loud GRUMBLE. "Would it be too much trouble?"
"Not at all."
Jiang Li had already told Xie Wan to have breakfast prepared, and to make extra.
Zheng Qi’s face flushed. "Thank you, then."
Jiang Li waved it off. "There’s nothing to thank me for. We were college classmates, after all."
She turned to lead Zheng Qi to the dining room and was startled to see Lu Zhi’an there with Shen Yanzhi. "When did you get here?"
Lu Zhi’an scratched his head, looking a little awkward. "I got here last night."
Jiang Li raised a thoughtful eyebrow. "Come on, let’s all go eat breakfast together."
’Good thing I had them make extra,’ she thought. ’Otherwise, it probably wouldn’t have been enough for the four of them.’
