Chapter 42: The Heavy Iron Doors

Sponsored

Seraphina forced her feet to move across the sunlit terrace.

Her knees felt weak.

Her hands shook as she clutched her silver prayer beads tight against her chest.

Down ahead of her, Leo Vance stepped through the dark stone archway and began to walk down the stone stairs into the dark underground hall.

His tall, broad back moved with slow, unhurried steps.

Seraphina swallowed hard, gathered the hem of her long white robes, and rushed down the stone stairs after him.

The moment her boots cleared the final step onto the cold floor tiles, the air shifted.

A deep, grinding roar echoed behind her.

*CLANG!*

The massive iron vault doors slammed shut with the force of a falling iron gate.

Heavy iron bolts slid into the stone walls with a series of loud, mechanical thuds.

*Thud. Thud. Thud.*

The bright sunlight of the upper courtyard was cut off in an instant.

Darkness rushed in, replaced only by the pale blue glow of containment runes carved along the floor and the faint flicker of silver oil lamps hanging from iron chains.

Silence settled over the underground hall.

Cold stone.

Damp air.

The heavy smell of old paper, dried ink, and bitter sealing incense filled the underground hall.

Towering bookshelves of black iron and dark wood stretched toward the vaulted ceiling, packed with thousands of old spellbooks and sealed paper scrolls.

Along the outer walls, thick glass cases rested on stone stands.

Inside the glass, old cursed items hummed with faint, dark vibrations.

Restricted Relic Vault.

The deepest, most dangerous vault beneath the Royal Academy.

Seraphina stood frozen near the sealed iron door, her back pressed flat against the cold metal.

Her clear blue eyes darted around the shadowed hall.

Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

A few paces ahead, Leo Vance stopped.

He did not look at the heavy locked doors.

He did not seem worried in the slightest.

Leo kept his hands tucked lazily into his uniform pockets as he turned around and looked at her.

His messy black hair fell across his brow.

In the dim blue light of the warding runes, his dark eyes held a faint, sharp glint that made the breath catch in Seraphina’s throat.

"You can let go of the door, Saintess," Leo said, his voice flat and amused. "It will not open again until the sixth bell rings at dusk."

Seraphina flinched.

She pulled her hands away from the iron surface, holding her silver beads in front of her like a shield.

"I... I am aware of the schedule, Cadet Vance," Seraphina said, trying to steady her voice.

She lifted her chin, trying to summon the calm, untouchable dignity expected of a holy Saintess of the Church.

"We are here on official duty," she continued, her voice echoing softly in the quiet vault. "Lord Noel assigned us to inspect the containment wards in Sector Three. We should begin at once."

Leo let out a quiet scoff.

He took a slow step toward her.

"Lord Noel," Leo repeated, the words dripping with mockery. "You still call him that."

Seraphina’s fingers tightened around the smooth silver beads.

"He is the chosen Hero of the Empire," she replied, keeping her gaze fixed firmly on Leo’s chest rather than meeting his eyes. "It is only right to show proper respect."

"Is that why he gave you away?" Leo asked bluntly.

The words struck her like a slap across the face.

Seraphina gasped, her pale cheeks instantly turning pale, then flushing with sudden heat.

"He did not... he did not give me away!" she protested, her voice rising slightly before she caught herself. "Lord Noel trusted you with my safety. He believed your strength would be useful in maintaining the holy barriers."

Leo stopped three paces away from her.

He tilted his head, looking down at her trembling hands.

"You really believe that?" Leo asked, his tone cold and practical. "He did not even look back when he announced your name."

Seraphina bit the inside of her cheek.

A sharp, familiar ache twisted in her stomach.

She remembered the way Noel had smiled on the pavilion stage.

Bright.

Polite.

Completely empty.

He had patted her shoulder through her thick cloak, offering words of encouragement that sounded like a line rehearsed from a textbook.

Then he had walked away without a single glance back.

Two years.

She had traveled across the Empire at Noel’s side for two full years.

She had spent countless nights kneeling on cold stone floors, chanting sacred prayers to heal his exhaustion.

Yet Noel had never once touched her bare hand.

He had never once asked if she was tired, cold, or afraid.

And today, with a cheerful wave to the crowd, he had locked her inside a dark underground room with the most notorious bully in the Academy.

’Why?’ the thought echoed in Seraphina’s mind, raw and bitter. ’Why was he so happy to leave me here?’

"Silence," Seraphina whispered, trying to push the painful thoughts away. "You know nothing of Lord Noel’s heart. He carries the weight of the entire realm on his shoulders. He has no time for petty distractions."

"Right," Leo said dryly. "A righteous savior."

Leo turned on his heel and began walking down the narrow central aisle between two massive rows of bookshelves.

"Follow me," Leo said without looking back. "The vault log is on the main desk."

Seraphina hesitated for a second, then hurried after him.

The aisle was narrow, barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side.

Tall iron shelves towered on both sides, blocking out the light and casting long, flickering shadows across the floor.

As Seraphina walked behind Leo, the faint, sweet warmth radiating from his body drifted back toward her.

It was not the cold, sterile smell of holy incense.

It was rich, dark, and hot, like spiced wine warming by a hearth.

The Half-Incubus bloodline humming inside Leo’s veins seeped into the close air of the narrow aisle.

Every time Seraphina breathed in, the warmth settled deep into her chest.

Her skin prickled.

A strange, dizzy heat washed over her neck and ears.

Beneath her long white skirts, her thighs brushed together in an involuntary, helpless reflex.

’What is this?’ Seraphina thought in rising panic. ’Why does my chest feel so tight?’

She gripped her prayer beads tighter, silently reciting the First Hymn of Purity to calm her racing heart.

*Goddess of Light, cleanse this vessel of unworthy thoughts...*

Leo stopped suddenly in front of a high wooden desk built into the side of a bookshelf.

Seraphina almost collided with his broad back.

She caught herself just in time, stepping back onto the cold stone tiles with a sharp gasp.

"Here," Leo said, pointing at a heavy iron-bound book resting on the wooden stand.

It was the official logbook tracking every sealed cursed item in the vault.

Leo leaned over the desk, flipping through the thick yellow pages with his right hand.

"The third seal was marked as unstable two weeks ago," Leo noted, his voice calm. "The Church neglected to refresh the binding runes."

Seraphina stepped up beside the desk, keeping a safe distance between them.

"The Church has many duties," she said defensively. "The priests have been busy preparing for the autumn harvest rites."

"Then the priests are careless," Leo said flatly. "Leaving cursed items half-bound beneath a school full of cadets is asking for a disaster."

He turned another page, then reached up toward an upper shelf to grab a leather tube containing the old room maps.

Because the shelf was high, Leo had to step closer.

In a single movement, he shifted his body, stepping directly into Seraphina’s space.

His broad shoulder brushed against her arm.

His tall frame towered over her, completely blocking her path down the aisle.

Seraphina’s back bumped softly against the wooden bookshelf behind her.

She was trapped.

To her left was the heavy desk.

To her right was a solid wall of old leather books.

And directly in front of her stood Leo Vance, his chest barely two inches from her holy robes.

Seraphina’s breath froze in her throat.

Up close, the heat coming off his body was overwhelming.

The sweet, rich scent of his bloodline filled her lungs, making her head spin with dizzy warmth.

She looked up.

Leo was not reaching for the map anymore.

He had one hand rested against the shelf right beside her head, his dark eyes locked straight onto her face.

In the dim light, the crimson-violet tint in his pupils gleamed with raw, unmistakable power.

Seraphina pressed her back as hard as she could against the books behind her.

Her small hands clutched the silver prayer beads against her chest, her knuckles turning white with tension.

"C-Cadet Vance," Seraphina stammered, her voice barely a whisper. "What are you doing? Please... step back."

Leo did not move.

Instead, he leaned in slightly closer, bringing his face down to her level.

"Why are your hands shaking, Saintess?" Leo asked, his voice low and raspy.

"I am not shaking," she lied, her voice trembling visibly.

"Your cheeks are red," Leo pointed out calmly. "Your heart is beating so fast I can hear it from here."

"That is... that is because of the vault’s heavy warding pressure," Seraphina said, turning her head away to avoid his gaze. "The sacred mana here is intense."

"Is that what you tell yourself?" Leo murmured.

He brought his free hand up, letting his long, calloused fingers lightly brush the golden cord tied around her waist.

The contact was brief.

Just the edge of his fingers grazing the fabric over her hip.

Yet the moment his hand touched her, a sharp shockwave of heat shot straight through Seraphina’s core.

Her body stiffened.

A tiny, choked gasp slipped past her lips before she could stop it.

Beneath her linen robes, the sensitive skin of her lower stomach tightened with a sudden, aching pulse.

Her legs felt like they were turning to water.

She had never felt anything like this in her life.

No holy scripture had ever warned her that a man’s simple touch could feel so dangerously hot.

"Lord Noel never touched you like this, did he?" Leo whispered, his warm breath brushing against the shell of her ear.

Seraphina shut her eyes tight, tears of shame and confusion pricking at the corners of her lashes.

"Stop..." she pleaded softly. "Please, Leo... do not do this. I am a sworn maiden of the Church. My body belongs to the Goddess..."

"Your Goddess is not down here," Leo said, his tone cold, dominant, and merciless. "And neither is Noel."

He leaned down closer, his lips hovering barely an inch from her soft, trembling mouth.

Seraphina felt her entire body trembling.

Part of her wanted to scream, to push him away with all her holy strength, to run back to the iron doors and bang on the metal until someone let her out.

Yet another part of her, a dark, hidden part she had never known existed, felt completely paralyzed by the heat radiating from his chest.

Her lips parted slightly on their own.

Her fingers loosened around her prayer beads.

Just as Leo’s dark eyes narrowed to close the remaining distance, the air inside the archive went dead cold.

A sudden, violent shudder tore through the stone floor beneath their feet.

*RUMBLE!*

Dust fell from the high arched ceiling, scattering across the wooden desk.

Seraphina gasped, her eyes flying open.

*CRACK!*

A sharp, deafening sound echoed from the deep darkness at the far end of the vault.

It was the sound of heavy stone splitting in two.

A wave of rotten, icy air swept through the narrow aisle, instantly putting out three of the hanging oil lamps.

The pale blue containment runes on the floor flickered violently, turning a sick, corrupted shade of black.

Leo froze.

His dark eyes snapped away from Seraphina’s face, locking onto the dark archway leading to Sector Three.

Deep in the shadows of the broken chamber, a low, guttural growl vibrated through the stone floor.

The ancient containment seal had shattered.
