Chapter 281: Echoes of the Fall
Across Aetheris, the sky tore open...
One moment, the world was calm. People went about their days like it was just another normal night. In Aegis Prime, mana-lamps lit up the streets. In the coastal city of Valenfall, giant iron cranes stood silent under the stars while dockworkers finished tying down their ships.
Then came the sound.
It was not thunder. It was not an explosion. It was the terrible, screeching snap of reality breaking like dry wood.
A jagged black line split the sky directly above Aegis Prime, but it didn’t stay in the clouds. The tear ripped straight down through the air, stopping just fifty feet above the main plaza. It tore open both in the sky and along the stone ground itself.
The sky bled a sick, bruised purple and black.
A pressure so heavy crashed down that glass windows for three miles shattered instantly. People screamed and ran as the black line widened into a huge, weeping wound in space. Corrupted mana, thick, oily, and smelling of rotten eggs, poured out like an upside-down ocean.
Before anyone could understand what was happening, abyssal beasts tumbled straight out of the tear and burst up from the ground, raining directly onto the crowded streets.
In Valenfall, the ocean turned pitch-black on the eastern horizon before the air even tore. The harbor waters boiled in violent currents, throwing dead sea-life onto the docks as the tide pulled back fast.
Suddenly, a massive Grade 8 rift split open over the eastern bay, stretching from the dark water straight into the sky.
Deep-sea abyssal horrors, beasts three stories tall with long tentacles, rows of needle-sharp teeth, and jagged bone-armor, dragged themselves out of the churning black water, crushing trade ships like dry wood.
Above the central Arcane Spire in the Magic Tower City, the sky tore open directly over the defense arrays, shattering the protective runes into useless sparks.
Lady Seren Emberveil stood atop the central spire, her deep crimson and silver robes snapping violently in the pressure wind. Her sharp eyes narrowed as her power flared, her hands weaving complex fire circles in mid-air to stabilize the collapsing barrier arrays before the abyssal tide could crush the lower quarters.
She had sensed the corrupted mana spike the moment it happened and had rushed out of her quarters before anyone could even sound an alarm.
If anyone could hold the line here, it was her.
In the Crimson Citadel of the Vampire Domain, Matriarch Liliana von Noctis stood on the highest tower. Her long silver-white hair whipped in the wind as her deep crimson eyes locked onto the sky tearing open above her lands.
When the first wave of abyssal beasts rained down toward the outer walls, Liliana raised her hand.
With a single flick of her wrist, she unleashed a wave of condensed crimson blood-mana, cutting a hundred falling beasts in half before their blood could even touch the walls. Her voice, filled with raw power, echoed across the courtyard as she commanded the noble vampire houses to send out their warriors.
Across the Elf Domain, two tears appeared, one directly above the sacred Great Tree of Sol-Valis, its silver leaves turning black where the corrupted mist touched them, and another along the southern border.
King Thandril Sol-Valis moved swiftly through the palace halls, his robes flowing behind him as he made his way toward the Great Tree. His eyes burned with cold fury as he raised his staff.
A massive wave of mana surged through the earth, raising thick walls of enchanted bark to block the abyssal horde pouring through the trees, while elven archers drew their bows and rained down enchanted arrows.
In the lower, shadowed districts of Sanctyra, far from the blinding light of the capital’s grand cathedrals, the quiet sanctuary tucked against the cliffside groaned under the sudden tremor.
Bess was holding her old wooden broom, sweeping the smooth black stone steps of the small church, when the sky above the lower valley cracked into jagged dark lines.
The terrible sound of reality breaking made her weak body tremble, but she did not drop her broom. As the corrupted mana swept through the narrow street, black stone cracked, and the cliff above began to crumble.
A dark hole opened right above the narrow street, dropping two razor-clawed abyssal beasts onto the stones. Bess looked up, her faded, wrinkled eyes reflecting the dark glow of the rift. She didn’t have the strength to run, nor did she have the power to cast a spell.
Instead, a gentle, sad smile touched her frail lips.
"Ah... so it is my time," Bess whispered softly, her faint voice swallowed by the chaos.
In her mind, she didn’t see the monsters. She saw a young vampire girl with silver-white hair and deep violet eyes who had stood right here in this church, desperate for answers.
I hope you found your path, Elisabeth... walk safely in the shadows, child. May the Goddess watch over you all...
A terrible screech echoed through the alley as a sharp bone claw swept down toward a young child hiding on the steps behind her.
Without a second thought, the frail old caretaker stepped forward, throwing her weak body over the child. The heavy shadow fell, the black claws cut through the air, and old Bess closed her eyes for the last time, wrapped in the quiet, blanket-like darkness she had always loved.
In the upper district, the grand cathedral’s glass dome shattered inward. High Priestess Celestia didn’t flinch. She stepped forward as her Holy Knights drew their blessed swords, forming a wall around the praying people.
A brilliant golden barrier burst from Celestia’s hands, burning the falling abyssal creatures in bursts of fire.
In the strongholds of the Beastkin Territories, the sky split open over the ancestral war-grounds.
High Chieftain Varga Ironclaw stood on the high wooden walls of the Silverfang fortress. His silver fur stood on end with rage, and his eyes burned with fury. Beside him stood his wife, his trusted elders, and his large family, including his fifty sons and daughters, all in full armor and holding heavy battle-axes.
"My kin! Stand tall!" Varga roared, his voice shaking the walls as he swung his massive war-axe into the air. "The skies may rot, but the Silverfang tribe bows to no monster!"
Without a second thought, Varga ordered his eldest sons to lead a group to contain a smaller Grade 5 Gate that had opened along the eastern valley border. Then Varga himself jumped off the fifty-foot wall into the main abyssal breach below, his axe trailing arcs of destructive force.
In the Dwarf Kingdom, tears in the sky opened over the surface outposts and mountain passes, raining down monsters that charged toward the underground entrances.
Deep inside the capital mountain, King Borin Ironwell stood in the forge-hall, his red beard glowing under the furnace light. With a heavy stomp, he triggered ancient defense runes, dropping massive stone slabs to seal the outer trade tunnels while dwarven warriors locked shields at the main gates.
Across every land, monsters fell from the sky and crawled up from the ground. The world had been thrown into an all-out war in a matter of minutes.
_
At the exact same time, the sky above Aegis Academy met the same terrifying fate.
The stars and the moon vanished, swallowed whole by a thick, suffocating blanket of purple mist. It rolled across the horizon like a living wall, swallowing the mountain peaks around the campus before spilling over the walls.
Inside the Academy grounds, the emergency alarms didn’t go off.
The defensive runes along the outer walls and the communication networks connected to the Astra Net shorted out instantly, overwhelmed by the sudden, violent surge of corrupted mana. The air grew heavy, bitter, and thick with the smell of rot.
On the edge of the campus, near the Sealed Valley, two figures moved through the thick forest at terrifying speed.
Professor Morgana’s boots barely touched the ground with each step. Her hair, pulled into a messy ponytail, whipped behind her as her eyes scanned the trees. Beside her, Damon Draven moved like a ghost, his long dark coat silent despite the brutal speed they were keeping.
"The air is already violent," Damon said, his voice flat, calm, and cold. He held out a hand, watching the faint purple sparks dance across his knuckles. "The mana is corrupted. The same as a high-grade Gate."
"It’s worse than that," Morgana growled, not slowing down. "Look at the mist."
Around them, the trees were twisting, their bark turning black and peeling away as the corrupted air killed the life from the leaves.
The purple fog crept into their lungs like ice water, dulling their senses and messing with their internal mana. When they broke through the last line of trees and reached the ridge overlooking the Sealed Valley, both fighters stopped dead.
Below them, the valley was gone.
Where forests and jagged stone ridges used to be, there was only a churning sea of dark purple haze. And in the center of that sea, floating three hundred feet off the ground, was a massive, pulsing tear in space.
A Grade 8 Gate.
It was huge, its edges jagged and weeping black liquid that turned into mist before hitting the ground. But what made Morgana’s blood run cold wasn’t just the rift itself.
It was what the mist was doing.
Thousands of monsters were already crawling out of the tear, Grade 4 and Grade 5 threats, towering multi-limbed beasts with needle-like armor, and floating, many-eyed horrors dripping with dark acid.
But they weren’t just coming from the Gate.
The purple mist itself was turning solid. Out of thin air, using the corrupted mana hanging in the air, new beasts formed directly from the fog. Horrible creatures of hard bone, shadow-born stalkers, and razor-clawed four-legged beasts appeared by the dozen every second.
"Damn it. They’re pouring out of the rift, but the air itself is making them," Morgana said, her voice grim. "If this mist reaches the city, the beasts will get past the walls without even breaking them."
"The monsters are already moving toward the Academy and the city," Damon noted, his dark straight-sword resting at his side, its metal gleaming with a black shine. "If we leave this place to defend the academy, the valley will overflow. If we stay, the first wave reaches the students."
"The academy isn’t weak," Morgana spat, her mana exploding outward and pushing the purple mist back in a wide circle. "Even the lower-ranked students know how to fight. If the senior students form up, they can hold the inner plazas against the first wave. We hold the source right here."
_
While the ridge of the Sealed Valley became a bloodbath, chaos hit the Grand Hall of the banquet.
Seconds earlier, the hall had been filled with music, laughter, and the clinking of glasses as students and nobles enjoyed the evening banquet. Couples danced near the center floor, and laughter echoed beneath the floating crystal chandeliers.
Then, the world shifted.
A heavy, suffocating pressure slammed into the room. The floating chandeliers flickered wildly before dying completely, plunging the hall into shadow. Every high-ranked student in the room stiffened as a violent, unnatural wave of mana washed over them from the direction of the Sealed Valley.
A split second later, the tall arched windows shattered inward. Thick, sickening purple mist poured through the broken frames, rolling down the walls and across the floors like heavy smoke.
Panic broke out instantly.
Students shoved past each other, knocking over tables. Silver plates, roasted meat, and expensive wine glasses crashed onto the floor.
"What is that?!"
"The windows—someone call the guards!"
"Everyone shut up and stand still!" a voice roared across the hall.
It wasn’t a teacher. It was Elian Silvanis.
The Student Council President stepped to the front of the upper balcony. His usual warm golden eyes were completely cold now. He didn’t waste time shouting orders that no one would hear. Instead, he slammed his boot onto the marble railing.
Boom!
Elian used his Barrier affinity, pushing a surge of mana into the hall’s main supports. A shining, golden wall burst up from the floor, spreading quickly into a multi-layered barrier that sealed off the broken windows and pushed the purple mist back toward the walls.
"Student Council members, form lines at the four main staircases!" Elian commanded, his voice echoing clearly through the huge hall. "First-years, move to the center of the room. Don’t touch the mist. Don’t run for the doors in a panic, you’ll crush each other."
Beside him, Sylvia stepped forward. Her long hair was loose, her eyes sharp as glass. She drew her sword in one smooth move. Bright, pure yellow lightning crackled along the blade, casting harsh, flashing light across the balcony.
"Anyone who causes a panic gets knocked out," Sylvia warned coldly, her voice cutting through the noise. Her Master Low presence washed over the crowd, calming the terrified students. "Move to the center. Now."
At the eastern table, Leo stood near the edge of the group. Beside him, Caster moved closer to protect Julia. She was trembling but holding her ground, her pink hair messy and her eyes wide with fear.
Cordelia stepped closer to her, placing a firm hand on her shoulder. "Julia, are you alright? Stay close to me."
Lyssaria stood close to her brother Roan, her eyes calm but alert. Malva stood a few steps away from Leo, her face blank and unreadable, but her eyes were scanning the room with sharp focus.
Roan wiped a trickle of blood from his lip, still sore from his earlier fight with Alice, his eyes locked on the purple fog pushing against Elian’s barriers. Alice reached into her spatial ring and pulled out her massive longsword with a heavy metallic sound.
Riven had already drawn his dual daggers, stepping up beside Alice.
"What the hell is this?" Roan muttered, his lazy demeanor completely gone. "This isn’t normal. The mana in that mist... it feels rotten."
Leo didn’t answer right away. His eyes were fixed on the sky outside the broken windows. Through the gaps in the purple fog, he could feel the sickening, heavy mana pulsing from the Sealed Valley.
What is this? Leo thought, his jaw clenching. This mist... this mana... it’s completely wrong. Why is this happening?
His mind raced, matching every detail he knew about the original game story. The timeline was broken. It was like someone had taken the original story and thrown it into a grinder.
"Leo..." a soft, trembling voice called out.
It was Julia , clinging tightly to Caster’s sleeve, her eyes wide with fear. Her Spatial Pressure affinity let her feel the small tremors in the world around her.
"Leo... the space outside... it’s tearing apart," Julia whispered, her voice shaking. "It’s not just over the valley... I can feel tears opening all across the city... across the whole academy..."
Before Leo could process her words, the doors at the main entrance of the banquet hall were thrown open.
The students flinched, raising their weapons, but it was not a monster that entered.
It was Vice President Helene Draven.
Her dark skin was wet with rain, her short silver hair damp, and her sharp grey eyes swept over the hall in a second. Her Gravity affinity settled over the room, calming the chaos.
Right behind her stepped Professor Vance, his brown hair messy and his thin coat wrinkled as he held a tracking tablet. Beside him was Professor Eleanor. Behind them, four guards took up defensive positions.
"President Elian," Helene called out, her voice calm and steady.
"Vice President," Elian replied from the balcony, keeping his hands steady as he held the barriers. "What is happening outside?"
Helene walked down the center, her boots clicking against the floor. The crowd of students parted for her.
"The campus defenses are broken," Helene stated plainly. She didn’t try to soften the news. "A Grade 8 Gate has opened inside the Sealed Valley..."
A wave of gasps echoed through the room.
Grade 8.
The words hung in the air like a death sentence.
Color drained from even the bravest students and proud heirs of major houses. Grade 8 meant Sovereign-rank threats. It meant creatures that could destroy cities, wipe out armies, and require the strongest fighters in the world just to slow down.
"Grade 8...?" Caster whispered, his hands trembling. "That’s... that’s a world-ending event. How did a Grade 8 Gate open inside the Academy?!"
Arthur, standing near Amelia and Nyra, stared at Helene in shock. His golden eyes were wide. He knew what a high-grade Gate could do, he had watched Oakhaven burn under a far smaller threat.
Leo stood frozen as the realization hit him.
A Grade 8 Gate...?
