Chapter 280: The Harvest of Ruin
The silence that followed the Fallen Leader’s final words was suffocating.
It settled heavy and cold over the Sanctuary, thick enough to choke a weaker person. The rulers of Aetheris, sovereigns who commanded armies, people who bent the laws of nature, and kings whose names were carved into stone, sat completely frozen.
Not a single chair moved. Not a single breath was drawn loudly.
What could they say? One man had walked into the most secure, secret room in the world without setting off a single alarm.
He had stood in front of them, mocked their power, stripped away their pride, and exposed their deepest, ugliest fears, all while calling their noble crowns and ancient legacies nothing more than pathetic forts built from fear.
He had called them scared cattle waiting for the butcher.
...And right now, sitting in the shadow of his terrifying presence, none of them had a single thing to say back.
Then, a low, rumbling chuckle broke out from the side of the table.
"Pfft..." Zephyr slapped his knee and burst into a loud, roaring laugh.
"Pahahahaha!" Zephyr doubled over, clutching his stomach as he laughed so hard a tear formed in the corner of his eye. "Oh man... oh gods, my stomach!"
The Fallen Leader’s gaze shifted slowly toward him. The rest of the room stared at Zephyr in complete shock, looking like they thought he had lost his mind. In truth, every ruler there already knew Zephyr was crazy, but to laugh at a moment like this felt like madness.
"Did... did you rehearse that in a mirror before coming here?!" Zephyr wheezed, wiping his eye as he pointed a finger straight at the Harbinger. "Honestly? That speech sounded like it was written by a ten-year-old edgelord who couldn’t control his own fantasies!"
Zephyr stood up from his chair, copying the Harbinger’s dramatic hand movement in a silly, high-pitched voice: "’Oh look at me, I am the Harbinger of Ruin! I have no emotions! I am fear, fear is me, feel my edgy darkness!’"
Zephyr broke down laughing again, shaking his head wildly.
"Seriously?! That’s the best you could come up with? I’m dying over here! ’I stripped my heart down to stone,’ chill out, old man! You don’t have to suppress your feelings just because you had a bad century! You can keep your "dark emotions" to yourself, nobody asked for your life story!"
Zephyr stepped around the table, his ocean-blue eyes sharp with a mocking, dangerous glint as his boots hit the floor with a thud. He briefly glanced toward the floating images of the Union leaders, scoffing openly.
"And don’t you dare put me in the same group as these scared fools," Zephyr added, waving a dismissive hand at the kings and Sovereigns. "They might sit here shaking in their seats, but I don’t care about their titles or their political games."
He turned back to the Fallen Leader, his grin turning as sharp as a blade.
"You sit there boasting about carving away your heart like it makes you divine," Zephyr spat, his voice dropping.
"Emotions aren’t weaknesses, you idiot. They are the... forge. Love isn’t a weakness, it’s the fuel that makes you fight until your lungs burst and your heart stops. Sadness isn’t a weight, it’s the heavy hammer that turns grief into steel. Anger doesn’t blind you, it sharpens the edge so your blade bites deeper into the bone."
He paused for a moment and said in low tone. "...And fear? Fear isn’t a leash, old man. Fear is the cold edge of the blade that keeps your eyes open when the dark comes hunting."
Zephyr leaned forward, towering over the edge of the table as lightning crackled softly beneath his skin.
"If rotting in the cold, stripping away everything that makes you alive, and becoming a hollow, speech-giving ghost is what you call being freedom... then keep your abyss. I’d rather burn out as a mortal brute with blood on my blade than live a thousand years as a statue in the dark."
The Fallen Leader did not snap into a rage. Instead, he simply tilted his head, his pale face smooth as carved ivory as he let out a soft, pitying sigh.
"How predictable..." the Fallen Leader murmured, his voice smooth.
"You cling to those fleeting sparks because you know nothing else, Zephyr. But nothing in this world comes without a price. Even the heavens and abyss demand their payment when you dare to reach for power. Every time you love, every time you burn with rage, you hand the abyss another chain to bind you."
He turned his gaze toward the High Seats, a cold, mocking smirk touching his lips.
"Just look at your precious Union," the Fallen Leader continued.
"Your Oracle... her mind is already breaking, isn’t it? She clawed at her own eyes trying to see the future, trying to see the rise of the Abyss King. She paid the price for your arrogance, warning you of the weakening seals and the awakening in the depths, and now she sits in the dark, bleeding her life away while you monsters sit here."
A sharp wave of shock swept through the room.
High Elder Sylas’s eyes widened slightly, and even Grand Duke Orion stiffened. The fact that the Oracle’s health was failing after her last vision was a top secret known only to the High Seats in this room. Not even the lower members knew.
Yet the Fallen Leader spoke of it as if he had been sitting beside her bed.
A terrifying thought settled over every king and ruler there: They had a traitor. The Fallen knew everything.
"You think you can hide behind your walls?" the Fallen Leader sneered softly.
"You build your grand places, you hide behind the prophecy of the Abyss King, and you pretend you are in control. But... you are blind. You capture one of my low-ranking followers, you torture him for information, and when he gives you a piece of my plan, you pat yourselves on the back thinking you were ready. You played right into my hands."
The Fallen Leader took a slow, careful step back toward the edge of the room.
"I would love to stay and watch you all tear each other apart over who sold you out," he murmured, his voice carrying a quiet, deadly amusement. "But my time here is done. The stage is already set, and the show is about to begin."
Behind him, the air cracked with the sound of breaking glass as a jagged dark hole tore open, revealing a swirling void of violent energy. The Fallen Leader turned his back on the room and took a slow, careful step toward the portal.
Crack!
Without a single hand movement or spoken word, a dozen swords of bright blue lightning appeared out of thin air around the intruder. Their glowing tips locked directly onto his throat, heart, and eyes, stopping him inches from the portal.
"Who said you could come and go as you please in front of me?" Zephyr’s voice rang out, sharp and deadly, his blue eyes glowing with wild power. "Remember one thing, kid. You might think you’re old, but I’ve lived long enough to know a broken old man when I see one."
The Fallen Leader paused. He looked down at the crackling lightning blades hovering near his skin. Slowly, calmly, he raised a single finger and gently touched the tip of the blade at his throat. The blade didn’t explode, it simply turned into mist around his skin.
"You really haven’t changed at all, Zephyr," the Fallen Leader murmured softly, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips. "Still as loud and foolish as ever."
"Yeah, yeah, I heard you," Zephyr scoffed, resting both hands on the handle of his huge sword. "Whatever you say, U.N.C.L.E."
The Fallen Leader stared at Zephyr for a long moment, then let out a soft, quiet laugh.
"You may be right to call me that, Zephyr..." the Fallen Leader spoke softly, stepping past the fading lightning toward the center of the portal.
"But one day, when you or those around you suffer because of those very emotions you love... I will ask you then: does it feel good to feel, or would it have been better to cut them all away? I will ask you when you are kneeling in the ash."
He turned his pale face back toward the rest of the High Seats, his voice echoing through the room like a funeral bell.
"Consider this my grand opening," the Fallen Leader whispered, his silver eye spinning at a terrifying speed.
"I am the fire that will burn away your hollow titles and test whether your fragile Union is worth surviving. Let us see how much your people trust their ’immortal sovereigns’ when the sky falls on their heads. Show me your worth... or burn in your own sins."
He took a final step back into the shimmering dark void behind him, his cold smile widening as the spatial tear began to collapse.
"I came here today to remind you all that I am your karma made manifest... and The Fallen will rise—"
Snap.
The Fallen Leader snapped his fingers.
Zephyr lunged forward in a flash of motion, his greatsword trailing a blinding, deafening wave of thunder. But the spatial portal snapped shut like a folding mirror, completely swallowing the Fallen Leader’s figure and his fading voice.
Boom!
Zephyr’s blade sliced through empty air, shattering the floor into a crater where the portal had just been, sparks of dying lightning dancing across the ruin.
For a few seconds, absolute silence ruled.
Before anyone could speak, the sensors in the sanctuary went wild. It wasn’t an alarm at first, it was a sudden, violent drop in the world’s mana... that made every Transcendent-level fighter feel in their blood.
"What is this pressure?!" King Borin Ironwell barked, as his instincts screamed in danger.
Cardinal Titus Corvin leaned over the central screen as it finally exploded in a frenzy of flashing red warning lights. Urgent alerts took over every private channel and security system in the room. His face turned deathly pale as he scanned the fast streams of data flooding his display.
"By the Goddess..." Titus breathed, his voice trembling. "It wasn’t just a threat..."
"Report! Speak, Titus !" Grand Duke Orion Ashford demanded, his voice rough.
"Multiple rifts are opening everywhere!" Emperor Aldric shouted. "A Grade 8 Gate has opened over the Capital of Aegis Prime! And another Grade 8 Gate has just opened in the city of Valenfall!"
"Two Grade 8 Gates in the Human Domain alone?!" Grand Duke Orion’s eyes widened.
"That’s not all!" High Priestess Celestia cut in, her soft face tightening in horror. "A Grade 7 Gate has just opened over Sanctyra!"
"My borders!" Beastkin High Chieftain Varga growled, his clawed hands leaving deep marks in his armrests. "A Grade 7 Gate has opened over the Great Plains, and a Grade 6 is tearing through the northern mountain passes!"
"The Dwarf Kingdom has two breaches!" Borin shouted, reading his own urgent messages. "A Grade 7 over the capital peaks and a Grade 6 collapsing the deep tunnels!"
"The Magic Tower City has a Grade 8 Gate forming directly above the central Arcane Spire!" the Arcanum Sage reported, his glowing image flickering wildly.
"Even my domain..." King Thandril of the Elves spoke, his old voice filled with cold disbelief. "Two Grade 8 Gates have appeared over the Great Tree and the southern border."
"And a Grade 8 over the Crimson Citadel..." Matriarch Liliana added, her eyes narrowing into deadly slits.
"Look at the rifts!" High Elder Sylas narrowed his eyes, his hands moving across the map. "None of these gates are fully open yet!"
"Does it matter?!" Emperor Aldric snarled. "These aren’t normal gates where monsters stay inside until we go in to clear them! These are Incursion Break Gates! The rifts will throw hordes straight into the sky and onto our streets!"
The room went icy cold.
A Incursion Gate was the worst nightmare for any civilization. There was no time to set up defenses, no time to send in armies, and no way to trap the enemy inside the rift. The moment the gates fully opened, thousands of monsters would rain down directly onto cities, forts, and lands.
If these gates were allowed to pour out their horrors unchecked, millions of civilians would die within hours. The foundation of the whole world would collapse, and the people’s trust in the Astra Union, the belief that their god-like rulers could protect them, would be destroyed.
But beneath the panic and the immediate nightmare... what every ruler in the sanctuary truly felt was a suffocating, primal fear.
Fear of the Harbinger of Ruin. Fear of the ghost who had just stood in their sanctuary, mocked their existences, and vanished without leaving a trace.
Every single domain across Aetheris was under attack at the same time. It was a huge net of destruction covering the whole world. The amount of power, lives, and years of planning required to open multiple Grade 7 and Grade 8 Gates at the exact same moment was beyond understanding.
How...?
The question burned in the minds of everyone present. How could one group bypass every rune, every early-warning tower, and every defense built by the founders of Aetheris? How could they plan a worldwide strike of this size without a single leak?
It was a move that must have cost The Fallen years of saved resources, lives, and hidden groups, a desperate gamble that stripped the cult down to nothing.
Yet the attack was perfect...
And the worst part was the crushing realization that everything they thought they knew was a lie. The high-ranking Fallen member the Union had captured? The interrogation? The warning about an upcoming attack?
It wasn’t a victory for the Astra Union at all.
It was a piece of bait, fed to them by the Harbinger. He had thrown them a bone, watched them scramble like fools to prepare for one attack, and used their distraction to secretly set up a trap for the whole world.
He hadn’t just attacked them, he had played them, mocked them, and showed them how helpless they really were.
"We have no choice!" High Elder Sylas commanded, his voice ringing across the sanctuary like thunder. "We must split our forces and defend our capitals now!"
"Wait!" Emperor Thandril shouted, his face desperate. "If every High Seat and ruler returns to defend their own capital... what about Aegis Academy?! The Sealed Valley has a Grade 8 Gate opening. What about the trapped students?!"
Dead silence hit the table. The choice was cold and brutal.
If the rulers abandoned their capitals to save the academy, their homelands would burn and millions would die. If they stayed to protect their capitals, the heirs of every major family trapped in the academy would be slaughtered.
"We cannot abandon our homelands," Lord Caspian von Noctis spoke, though his eyes showed deep pain. "We must trust the academy teachers. Helene Draven, Damon Draven, Morgana and Headmaster Vega must hold the line until we clear our gates."
"Vega is trapped on the southern border dealing with a regional rift!" Aldric yelled. "They are on their own!"
"Then they must survive on their own!" Grand Duke Orion barked, his face hard as iron. "I am returning to Aegis Prime to deal with the gate!"
"I will head to the Elf Domain to assist King Thandril," High Elder Sylas stated firmly. "The Great Tree cannot fall. Move! All of you, defend your sectors!"
One by one, the projections of the domain leaders cut out as kings, matriarchs, and archmages rushed to lead their armies. Near the shattered floor, Zephyr stood quietly. He lifted his massive greatsword and rested it over his shoulder.
"Zephyr!" Grand Duke Orion called out, dark shadows whipping violently around his body as his form began to dissolve into the surrounding darkness. "There are two Grade 8 Gates in the Human Domain! I am taking the Capital of Aegis Prime! You take the second Grade 8 Gate at Valenfall!"
Zephyr didn’t even look at Orion. "...Don’t tell me what to do, Orion."
"Father..." Duke Noah’s projection spoke, his eyes calm yet grave. "Are you heading to Valenfall?"
Zephyr was silent for a moment. His eyes flickered with something raw, something barely contained. He wanted to go to the Academy. He wanted to see his grandkids, to make sure they were safe, to stand between them and anything that threatened them.
But he also knew that Valenfall was the bigger threat. Millions of lives that would be lost if he delayed.
"...Valenfall first," Zephyr said, his voice flat, almost bitter. "The Academy will hold. My grandkids and your wife are Celestials. They’ll survive. And I trust both Morgana and Damon to hold the gate for some time. They both are good kids."
He turned his gaze toward the distant horizon, toward the dark storm clouds gathering over the northern border.
"But if anyone, any monster, any demon, any bastard from the Fallen, touches a single hair on their heads before I get there..." His voice dropped to a low, dangerous growl. "I will burn that gate to ash, and then I will find the Fallen leader and make him wish he had never been born..."
Without waiting for a response, Zephyr stepped forward. A blinding burst of lightning detonated beneath his boots, shattering the sanctuary’s stone edge as he shot out into the sky like a falling star, descending directly toward Valenfall.

But I just want to say this, these POV shifts are sometimes necessary. You can’t tell a story like this from just one angle. Also, in this arc, you’ll see different POVs. Not just Leo, but others as well. That’s just how this story has to be told right now.
