The due-diligence team returned its first report at 8:16 the following morning.
Adrian had expected a company.
What he found was a history.
He sat alone in his office with six digital folders open across the wall display — ownership, assets, subsidiaries, patents, financial history, and finally, a single name. Thomas Sterling. He opened the ownership file first and started reading.
Sterling Industrial Holdings had survived longer than most privately founded industrial companies had any right to. Its original structure had been unusually conservative for a firm that expanded as aggressively as it had through the late 1960s and 1970s. Thomas Sterling had established the company in 1964 and, at some point in the early 1980s, gradually transferred ownership into a private family trust.
The trust had changed names twice. Its trustees had changed six times. Its beneficiaries had changed three times.
One thing had remained constant.
The controlling shareholding had never been sold.
"That’s interesting," Adrian said quietly, and opened the next document.
The present-day ownership structure was complicated enough to discourage casual investigation. Several investment vehicles held minority positions. Two pension funds held another block. A private European industrial group held just under twelve percent.
But the controlling interest belonged to one entity.
Sterling Heritage Trust — 51.8%.
"Who controls the trust?" he asked.
Emma answered from the doorway. "We’re still working on that."
"Still?"
"It’s more complicated than it should be." She stepped in and set a tablet on his desk. "The trust isn’t registered as a conventional investment vehicle. No publicly listed beneficiaries. Current trustees are two British solicitors and a Swiss fiduciary company."
"And the beneficiaries?"
"That’s the problem. Officially there aren’t any."
Adrian looked at her. "That’s not possible."
"It is if the trust was structured correctly." She tapped the screen. "There’s a succession clause. If the Sterling bloodline produces a qualifying heir, control can be transferred."
"What qualifies as a qualifying heir?"
"We don’t know yet."
"Find out."
She nodded. "I thought you’d say that."
"Emma."
She stopped at the door.
"Don’t tell anyone I’m looking into the trust."
"Already understood."
The door closed.
Adrian looked back at the screen. For the first time since Daniel had uncovered Sterling Industrial Holdings, the company no longer looked like an old business his great-grandfather had left behind by accident.
It looked like something that had been waiting.

Robert walked in at 9:03 carrying a paper folder.
"You printed it," Adrian said.
"Some things deserve paper." He dropped the folder on the desk. "The company is worth more than its balance sheet suggests."
"How much more?"
"Potentially considerably more." Robert opened the folder to a page he’d already highlighted. "Sterling Industrial owns land. Over three hundred acres across four industrial sites in Britain. Most of it underused."
"Why?"
"The company stopped expanding decades ago."
"That doesn’t explain why it still owns the land."
"Nobody wanted to sell." Robert turned a page. "A board resolution from 1989. Every attempt to dispose of major industrial property was rejected by the trust. Even when the company needed cash."
"Especially then," Adrian said, reading it.
There was no financial justification in the resolution. Only a single line.
Strategic industrial land shall not be disposed of without extraordinary authorisation.
"Who wrote this?"
"Thomas Sterling."
Adrian leaned back.
His great-grandfather had apparently understood something Adrian had only recently begun to grasp himself — that industrial capability wasn’t simply factories. It was land, people, machinery, energy, supply chains, training. And the capacity to expand later, when everyone else had already sold the space that expansion required.
"You’re thinking about buying it," Robert said.
"I’m thinking about understanding it."
"That’s not what your face says."
Adrian smiled slightly. "Then my face needs better management."
Robert laughed, then sobered. "One more thing. Sterling Industrial has almost no debt."
"How?"
"Every time the company came close to taking on significant debt, someone injected capital." Robert placed another sheet in front of him. "Private entities connected to the Sterling Heritage Trust. Over the decades, roughly £2.4 billion in today’s money."
Adrian stared at the figure. "From the trust?"
"Apparently."
"Then where did the trust get the money?"
Robert’s expression was dry. "That’s what I thought you’d ask."

The car reached Sterling Industrial’s largest surviving site outside Birmingham at 10:27, surrounded by warehouses, railway lines, and older manufacturing businesses that had somehow survived the collapse of British heavy industry that had taken so many of their neighbours.
The main gate was modest. No enormous logo, no glass tower, no sculpture announcing technological ambition. Just an old metal sign.

"That’s almost arrogant," Robert said as the car stopped.
"Only if you haven’t earned it," Adrian said, and opened the door.

CNC machines running quiet, precise cycles. Automated inspection systems tracking components at microscopic resolution. Robotic assembly equipment moving with the unhurried confidence of well-maintained machinery. Specialised power electronics visible through the glass of open cabinet housings.
Not obsolete. Simply smaller than it should have been.
Peter Lawson, the managing director, met them near the entrance.
"Mr. Sterling."
"Peter."
"You’re early."
"I wanted to see the factory before the presentation."
Peter smiled. "Then you’ll like the next ten minutes."
He led them through a security door into a section of the floor with equipment that was clearly custom-built rather than commercially standard. Adrian stopped in front of it. "Who designed this?"
"Our engineering team."
"Internally?"
"Mostly. Some of the underlying technology goes back fifteen years."
"Why haven’t I heard about this company?"
Peter laughed quietly. "Because we’re very good at making things other companies use without making ourselves famous for it."
That answer stayed with Adrian longer than he expected.
"How many of these machines do you make a year?"
"Twenty-seven."
"Cost each?"
"About £1.8 million."
"And you sell to?"
"Manufacturers across Europe."
"Competitors?"
"Three serious ones."
"Market share?"
"Nine percent."
Adrian nodded slowly. That changed the calculation entirely. Sterling wasn’t an abandoned relic. It was a quiet specialist with technology embedded inside other people’s industries — the kind of business that most consumers would never know existed, precisely because it had never needed them to.
"What stops you producing more?" Adrian asked.
Peter’s expression was the one Adrian had seen from dozens of engineers over the past month.
"Capital."

Then he reached a page dated November 17, 1967.
A diagram filled most of the page. A layered material interface, drawn with careful precision, surrounded by calculations.

The same basic problem Helios was currently fighting, laid out in his great-grandfather’s handwriting nearly sixty years earlier.
He turned another page. Then another. The notes continued for dozens of pages — Thomas Sterling had been studying precisely the manufacturing problem Miriam’s team had rediscovered decades later.
But he hadn’t been working on batteries.
He’d been working on industrial materials.
On the final page, one sentence beneath the calculations.

Adrian stared at it.
"What does that mean?" Peter asked, watching him.

He turned the page. Nothing behind it. The notebook ended there.
But something had been tucked inside the back cover — a letter. No letterhead. No signature visible on the outside.
He unfolded it.

He began reading, and his expression changed slowly enough that Peter noticed.
"What is it?"
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
The letter wasn’t addressed to a company or a government department. It was addressed to two initials.

He read the first paragraph. Then the second. By the third, he had stopped breathing quite normally.
Thomas had written about an organisation. Not the Royal Archival Commission. Not R.A.C. Something older — something that appeared to have approached him because of his industrial research, decades before any of the letters and documents Daniel had recovered from Warehouse Nine.
The final paragraph was short. Adrian read it twice, then a third time.
"Mr. Sterling?" Peter said carefully.
Adrian folded the letter.
"We’re buying the company."
"Just like that?"
"No." He looked at the shelves around him. "Not just the company."

The acquisition team was waiting when Adrian returned to London at 6:48. Emma had prepared the preliminary structure. Robert had the financial analysis ready. The lawyers had a summary of the ownership complications.
Adrian walked into the conference room carrying a single notebook.
Nobody spoke when they saw it.
Robert looked at the cover. "That’s old."
"1966."
"What’s in it?"
"Why we’re buying Sterling." Adrian set it on the table. "Not because it’s cheap." He opened the financial report. "Not because of the land." He opened the patent portfolio. "Not because of two hundred patents."
He looked around the room.

"Full acquisition?"
"Eventually. Not immediately."
Robert frowned. "Eventually?"
"I don’t want to destroy the thing we’re buying." He looked around the table. "Sterling stays operationally independent for now. We provide capital, research funding, access to the wider group. Their engineering teams remain intact. Their patents become available to Orion, Helios, Aether, and Atlas where appropriate."
"And ownership?"
"Majority acquisition. Enough to control direction. Not so much that they forget who they are."
Robert considered it. "That’s different from how you’ve handled some of the other acquisitions."
"Because this isn’t a company I found." Adrian looked down at the old notebook. "It found its way back to me."

He read the final line twice, then sat back.
Not smiling from the reward itself. From what it confirmed.

He picked up Thomas Sterling’s notebook again and opened it to the final page.
If the interface can be controlled, the material can be controlled.
He ran a finger lightly beneath the words.
"Let’s see what else you knew," he said quietly.
His phone vibrated.

I found the person E.V. referred to.
A second message.
Edward Vale.
Adrian looked at the old notebook, then at the clock, then back at the phone.
Edward Vale had sat in his office days earlier and claimed not to know Thomas Sterling personally.
Apparently his family had known Adrian’s family for a great deal longer than he’d admitted.
Adrian set the notebook down carefully, the way you set down something you’d only just realised was heavier than it looked.
