The company was called Sterling Industrial Holdings.
Adrian stared at the name on his screen for nearly a minute before opening the file beneath it. Some information arrived so quietly it took a while to understand how significant it actually was. This was one of those moments.
The document was an old corporate registry extract, reconstructed overnight from several databases and archived records Daniel had managed to access. The formatting belonged to another era, the language older, but the essentials were clear enough.

Thomas. His great-grandfather.

Not what he’d expected at all.
He called Daniel, who picked up almost immediately.
"You’re awake," Daniel said.
"Since five. Same as you, I’m guessing."
"Same." Adrian could hear him already scrolling something on his end. "Cross-referenced the company names from the Commission records against historical corporate registries overnight. Most of the early ones are incomplete, or the companies disappeared entirely. Sterling Industrial didn’t."
"Who owns it now?"
"That’s where it gets interesting. You’re going to want to see this in person."
"Daniel."
A sigh. "Calder bought a minority stake in one of its subsidiaries eleven years ago. Not Calder under your ownership — the previous group, before Aurora ever touched it. Small industrial automation company, nothing strategically important at the time. The subsidiary was later sold off."
"Name?"
"Sterling Automation Systems."
Adrian was already on his feet. "Send me everything."
"Already did."
The call ended, and Adrian stood beside his desk for a long moment. For months he’d believed the pattern behind his family was a separate mystery entirely — something buried in archives, tied to institutions and old money and people who’d been watching his family for reasons he still didn’t understand. Now an unexpected bridge had appeared between the two. His great-grandfather hadn’t simply been wealthy. He’d built industrial companies, and at least one of them had survived.
Adrian looked at the four project folders on the other side of his desk — Orion, Aether, Atlas, Helios — then back at the name on the screen. "That sounds ominous."

At 8:40, he stood in Calder’s automotive lab watching Orion complete its longest run yet — no body panels, four temporary wheels, exposed wiring, sensors taped down everywhere, a battery enclosure plastered in warning labels. Nothing about it resembled the polished concept render. But it moved, twenty metres, then forty, then eighty, the drive system holding steady the whole way.
Laura Bennett stood beside him with her arms folded, running through the checks — thermal performance within target, controller stable, steering improved. When he asked about the battery, she hesitated before admitting it wasn’t theirs yet. "Interim lithium pack. Helios isn’t ready to power Orion."
"Yet," Adrian said.
Laura smiled. "You’re starting to sound like Miriam."
"She’s usually right."
The vehicle completed a fifth loop and stopped automatically, a technician confirming the battery temperature had held steady throughout. Twenty-six minutes, the first full endurance sequence, against an eventual target of several hours.
"Then today we celebrate twenty-six minutes," Adrian said, and meant it. He rested a hand against the temporary frame. "People assume progress begins when something becomes impressive. It doesn’t. It begins when something that didn’t work yesterday works today."
At 10:15 he found Miriam Shaw in the Helios lab, already pointing at the central display before he’d finished crossing the room. The performance curve had shifted — not dramatically, but enough that the thermal spike that used to appear under high-load testing had almost vanished entirely, holding across two hundred and fourteen cycles with the same manufacturing process and the same materials.
"So what’s different?" Adrian asked.
"We finally understand what we’re making," she said, and pulled up the microscopic model. The controlled micro-texturing on the electrode surface wasn’t simply increasing surface area the way they’d assumed — it was managing how the electrolyte behaved under pressure. "We’d been treating the interface as a contact problem. It’s actually a stress-management problem. The materials expand and contract at different rates while the battery’s operating, and that mismatch creates microscopic stress across the interface. Eventually the stress creates defects. The texture distributes that stress instead of letting it concentrate."
"So the materials were never fundamentally incompatible."
"Correct. We were just forcing them to behave as though they were."
"What does that give us?"
She hesitated before answering. "Potentially forty to fifty percent higher energy density than the current commercial benchmark — and don’t quote me on that number, because we’ve proven the mechanism, not the manufacturing process yet. Years from mass production. Maybe twelve months to a pilot line, if you give us enough money."
"Then you have twelve months."
She stared at him. "You’re serious."
"I’ve been serious since the first failure."
At 11:30, Chen handed him a device in the Aether lab — thicker than a modern smartphone, almost seamless. "Prototype seven," he said. "Open it."
Two presses on the frame released the rear panel. The battery module came free, then the communications module, then storage, each one keyed against accidental insertion. Chen timed the full swap and reassembly at two minutes thirteen seconds, still above target but close enough to matter.
Priya joined them to demonstrate the mesh network — two prototype devices connecting on a map, then a third, a line forming automatically between them as the network recalculated the optimal route. "Device one talks to device three through device two," she explained. "No tower required. Range is short right now, four hundred metres in dense urban conditions, further in open ground."
"Good," Adrian said, and when she looked surprised, added, "Because now we have somewhere to start." He handed the phone back to Chen. "Don’t build another smartphone. Build a piece of infrastructure people can carry in their pocket."
At 1:10, Adrian left Calder without the usual entourage — no announcement, no press, no investor briefing. The destination sat forty minutes away, a low industrial building behind a line of warehouses, its sign faded almost past legibility.

He stood outside it for several seconds before going in. Daniel was already waiting, having arranged access through the current owners without telling them exactly why Adrian wanted to see the place.
"You came," Daniel said.
"You said it still existed."
Inside, through the glass wall onto the production floor, robotic arms and CNC equipment moved with quiet precision alongside circuit-board assembly stations and testing benches — not enormous, not glamorous, but real, and still running.
"How old is this building?" Adrian asked.
"Twenty-three years. The company itself is sixty-two."
"Original headquarters?"
"Demolished. The original factory’s been converted into flats."
Adrian almost laughed. "Of course it has."
Daniel handed him a folder. Inside was a black-and-white photograph of a much younger Thomas Sterling standing beside a group of engineers, a factory floor behind them — machines, generators, electrical panels. Thomas wasn’t looking at the camera. He was looking at one of the machines, as though it mattered more than being photographed at all.
"1967," Daniel said.
The next page was an old company report — STERLING INDUSTRIAL HOLDINGS, FIVE-YEAR DEVELOPMENT PLAN — and the first objective stopped Adrian cold. Develop domestic manufacturing capability for critical industrial components. He read it twice. The document laid out plans for precision machinery, electrical systems, industrial controls, and eventually automated production — not a charity proposal, not a political manifesto, but an industrial strategy in almost the exact shape of the one Adrian had sketched out for himself four folders and one government meeting ago. "He was thinking about this in 1967," Adrian said.
"Yes."
"How did he know to think about it that way?"
Daniel didn’t answer, and Adrian looked at him. "That’s the question, isn’t it."
"There are more documents. Private archive. We don’t know whose."
"Then find out."
The company’s managing director, Peter Lawson, met them on the production floor a little before three. "I’m told you’re interested in the company’s history."
"Among other things."
"Most people just want to know if we’re profitable."
"Are you?"
"Moderately." Peter walked him along the line, admitting the software was mostly Sterling’s own, the hardware mixed, the supply chain heavily international. "Quite dependent," he said, when Adrian pressed.
"That’s the part I want to change," Adrian said. "I want to understand what it would take to manufacture the critical components here instead of importing them."
Peter studied him. "That would be expensive. Potentially hundreds of millions."
"I’ve heard that number before."
"You don’t sound frightened by it."
"I’m not."
For nearly two hours afterward, in a small conference room with the senior engineering staff, Adrian worked through the details — which components were imported, which could realistically be produced locally, which depended on foreign semiconductor suppliers, which manufacturing machines could eventually be built domestically and which couldn’t. The picture that formed was familiar: valuable expertise that had spent decades quietly becoming dependent on larger international suppliers, a company that had survived without ever quite finding room to expand again. Too small to fund deep research. Too large to operate like a startup. Too specialised to attract the kind of capital its supply chain actually needed to transform.
"How much to build a domestic precision-control division?" Adrian asked.
The chief engineer gave a short, nervous laugh. "You don’t ask small questions. Three hundred million, perhaps. More if you want full semiconductor independence."
"I don’t need that immediately. I need the capability to design around whatever semiconductor supply is actually available, and then gradually replace the dependency where the economics make sense. One piece at a time. That’s how you actually build an industrial ecosystem."
By 6:12, Adrian stood outside the building as the sun began to fall, Daniel beside him.
"You’ve been quiet," Daniel said.
"Thinking about my great-grandfather. He wasn’t just investing. He was building — and somebody wanted me to find these records eventually. People don’t accidentally leave thousands of records somewhere they could one day be reconstructed."
"You think the Commission wanted you to find them?"
"I think someone did. And if they did, they made one mistake." Adrian looked toward the road. "They assumed I’d spend all my time looking backward."
"You won’t."
"No."
At 7:03, riding back into the city, the System appeared.

"Finally," Adrian said, and the panel disappeared. For once the System wasn’t telling him what to buy. It was telling him to understand what he was actually looking at first.
The company had survived sixty-two years — ownership changes, recessions, technological shifts, decades of competition — and somehow, all this time later, Adrian was riding through London with the same family name attached to a technology empire only just beginning to take shape.
He called Emma. "Prepare a due-diligence team."
"For Sterling Industrial?"

He looked again at the photograph on his phone, his great-grandfather standing beside machines that looked almost primitive next to Orion or Helios, but built on the same underlying principle. Build what you need. Control what matters. Train the people who’ll carry it forward once you’re gone.
The company Thomas Sterling had left behind might be worth billions, or almost nothing. Either way, Adrian wanted to know exactly what it had become before he decided what it should become next — because somewhere inside sixty-two years of history sat an answer to a question he’d only just started asking.
What had his great-grandfather actually been building. And why had someone gone to such lengths to make sure Adrian eventually found it.
Behind him, the old factory sign stayed lit as the car pulled away. For the first time in decades, someone named Sterling was coming back.
