Chapter 63: The Weight of What You Build
Adrian arrived at the Department for Business and Trade at 1:26 p.m., five minutes early, which he considered entirely sufficient.
The building was more secure than Calder’s headquarters but far less theatrical about it — no unnecessary guards, no impressive reception hall designed to remind visitors where they stood, just layers of controlled access, quiet corridors, and people who’d long since grown accustomed to making important decisions without ever raising their voices.
Emma had come as far as reception before staying downstairs. Robert was already waiting.
"You look unusually relaxed," Robert said.
"I slept."
"That’s becoming rare for you."
"I’ve been busy."
"You’ve been building four companies inside four companies."
"That’s one way of putting it," Adrian said, and Robert handed him a folder as they walked.
Orion. Aether. Atlas. Helios — four programmes, four different timelines, four different categories of risk. Beneath the summary, Robert had highlighted one line in yellow.
Estimated strategic portfolio appreciation: 8.7% since programme announcement.
Adrian stopped walking. "Eight point seven, without a commercial product to show for it. Why?"
"Because markets price expectations, not just results," Robert said.
Adrian looked back at the number. It wasn’t interesting because it was large. It was interesting because it was proof — the companies he’d acquired were beginning to become worth more simply because people believed their combined capabilities could eventually produce something valuable. That was different from receiving money through a check-in, different from buying another company outright, different from shuffling an existing asset between balance sheets. This was value being created out of belief in a future that hadn’t arrived yet, but was already visible on paper.
"Keep tracking it," Adrian said.
"I knew you’d say that. You’re starting to care about the difference between wealth you receive and wealth you actually create."
"That’s the entire difference between owning a fortune and building one."
Robert smiled faintly. "Then let’s see whether the government agrees with your definition."
The meeting room held six people — two from the Department for Business and Trade, one from Energy Security and Net Zero, a senior civil servant who introduced himself simply as James, a technology policy adviser, and Helen Mercer, who’d spent most of her career in industrial strategy and was the only one who didn’t open with a question about his acquisitions.
"What exactly are you trying to build?" she asked instead.
"An industrial technology group."
"That’s a corporate description, not an answer."
He studied her for a moment before dropping the language entirely. "I want technologies good enough to compete globally, affordable enough to eventually reach ordinary consumers, and manufacturable enough that the knowledge doesn’t stay trapped in a single laboratory. Energy storage. Vehicles. Communications. Computing. Advanced manufacturing." He paused. "And eventually, I want those capabilities operating in Nigeria."
"Why Nigeria specifically?"
"Because I understand what happens to a country that becomes dependent on importing almost everything it needs."
"You’ve lived there."
"I understand the market," Adrian said, which was as close to an answer as he was willing to give in this room.
Mercer glanced toward Robert. "And you believe Calder can actually manufacture these technologies?"
"Not today," Adrian said. "That’s an important distinction, and also the entire point. We aren’t pretending we have an industrial base capable of producing all of this immediately. We’re building the capability in stages." He walked her through it — Helios beginning with research, then pilot manufacturing, then controlled production; Atlas starting with architecture and software before moving to hardware and network deployment; Aether beginning with the device itself before components and eventual semiconductor partnerships; Orion moving from prototype to limited production to scale.
"What do you need from the government?" Mercer asked.
"Not money. Access — to research institutions, universities, testing facilities, and regulatory pathways that don’t take three years simply because six departments need to stamp the same piece of paper. Eventually, infrastructure partnerships."
James leaned forward. "You’re asking for accelerated regulation."
"No. I’m asking for competent regulation. If the technology is unsafe, stop us. If it violates a legitimate requirement, stop us. Don’t make innovation slow simply because the process was built around technologies that existed twenty years ago."
The room went quiet. Robert looked down, hiding a smile.
Mercer nodded slowly. "That’s a reasonable position. Let’s talk about the vehicle."
Twenty minutes later, the room’s attention had shifted completely. A prototype rendering filled the screen, and unlike the concept-car presentations these officials had sat through before, Adrian’s contained none of the usual language — no sustainable, no connected, no next generation. Just the engineering itself: battery, drive system, chassis, power electronics, thermal management, software, manufacturing sequence, supply chain, and beneath all of it, a single figure.
LOCALISATION TARGET — 35% COMPONENT VALUE BY PHASE TWO.
"Local manufacturing?" Mercer asked.
"Initially in the UK. Later, other markets."
"Nigeria?"
"Eventually. Not until the economics genuinely make sense."
"That’s an unusually cautious answer."
"It’s deliberate," Adrian said, and moved to the next slide — PHASE THREE, 60%+ COMPONENT LOCALISATION. "If we build a Nigerian plant before the supporting ecosystem exists, we’ll spend enormous sums importing everything required to run a facility that’s supposed to be reducing imports in the first place."
"Then what comes first?"
"Training." The next slide read CALDER INDUSTRIAL ACADEMY — engineering, mechatronics, battery technology, industrial automation, software, advanced manufacturing, supply-chain management. "Universities can produce graduates. Industry has to produce people who actually know how to build."
The technology adviser looked up, impressed despite himself. "Apprenticeships."
"Engineers who understand production, technicians who understand automation, managers who understand both — and the same principle, eventually, in Nigeria."
Mercer leaned back. "You’ve thought about this a great deal."
"More than I expected to, if I’m honest."
At 2:41, she closed the folder in front of her. "There’s another matter. Your recent acquisitions — companies whose combined capabilities are considerably more valuable together than they appeared individually. Was that intentional?"
The honest answer was complicated. Some acquisitions had come from System-flagged opportunities, others from straightforward strategy, a few simply because he’d believed a company was undervalued. Looking backward now, though, the pattern was obvious.
"I recognised the value of the capabilities," he said.
"Before you bought them?"
"Not completely. I understood it properly once I started putting them all in the same room."
That answer seemed to satisfy her. "That’s exactly what industrial policy has been trying to achieve for years."
"I’m not interested in industrial policy," Adrian said. "I’m interested in making things."
For the first time, Mercer smiled. "Perhaps that’s precisely why this might actually work."
At 4:06, Adrian returned to Calder to find the engineering floor busier than he’d left it. The Orion test platform was running. Aether’s engineers were clustered around a new prototype. Atlas had filled an entire wall with network simulations. Miriam Shaw was waiting for him with a tablet.
"We have a result," she said. "Good enough to matter."
The latest Helios cell had exceeded the previous thermal threshold by thirty-one percent, with an improved energy density on top of it — not enough yet for commercial deployment, but enough to change the entire trajectory of the programme.
"How reproducible?" Adrian asked.
"Three consecutive batches. One hundred and twenty cells."
"You’re confident."
"I’m a scientist. I’m never confident." A pause. "I’m increasingly convinced."
"That’s close enough for me," Adrian said, and she almost smiled before her expression shifted back to something more careful.
"We’ve got another problem. The manufacturing equipment to build this at scale doesn’t exist. We can produce these interfaces in a lab, even with specialised equipment, but reproducing the same microscopic structure at industrial speed needs a process nobody’s built yet."
"Can we build it?"
"Probably. That’s not a small request, Adrian — we’re talking about developing manufacturing machinery for a process that doesn’t commercially exist. It could cost hundreds of millions."
"Then we’ll spend hundreds of millions."
She studied him for a long moment. "You really don’t know how to stop, do you."
"No."
"Good," she said, and this time she did smile.
At 5:14, Laura Bennett was waiting beside the Orion prototype. "It’s moving. Under its own power."
"Show me."
The engineers cleared the test area, a technician activated the system, and the chassis came alive with no dramatic roar — just a low electrical hum, the wheels turning, the vehicle rolling forward five metres, then ten, before stopping cleanly.
Nobody spoke for a moment.
"How many faults?" Adrian asked.
"Three. Thermal regulation, rear controller response, steering calibration."
"Anything dangerous?"
"No."
"Then fix them."
Laura laughed. "You really are impossible."
"How fast, eventually?" Adrian asked.
"Target performance is significantly above what you’re looking at today."
"Good." He walked over and rested a hand against the aluminium frame, still warm from the test. It wasn’t a concept anymore. It had moved. That mattered more than any of the projected figures on Robert’s tablet.
At 6:02, Robert came into the office with a tablet of his own — news headlines, analyst reports, investor commentary. Calder’s market valuation had risen again, not dramatically, but consistently, the market slowly working out that the company’s future might not be defined by what Adrian had acquired so much as what those acquisitions were becoming.
"Three institutional funds increased their positions today," Robert said. "Same group each time. And they’ve started buying into adjacent sectors — industrial automation, power electronics, telecommunications infrastructure."
"Why?"
"That’s what I’m trying to work out."
Adrian looked at the list until the pattern surfaced on its own. They weren’t simply investing in Calder. They were positioning themselves around the exact technologies Calder was developing, which meant someone was either extraordinarily good at reading markets, or knew more than the market should.
"Find out who’s advising them," he said. "Quietly."
"Obviously," Robert said, and left.
The System appeared a moment later.

ORION: FIRST POWERED MOVEMENT ACHIEVED.
HELIOS: REPRODUCIBLE BREAKTHROUGH CONFIRMED.
AETHER: MODULAR PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT ACTIVE.
ATLAS: DISTRIBUTED NETWORK ARCHITECTURE UNDER DEVELOPMENT.
ORGANIC PORTFOLIO VALUE: INCREASING.
No reward followed. No mission. Just the summary, sitting there.
"You’re learning too," Adrian said quietly, and the panel disappeared.
At 7:11, Daniel called, and Adrian almost let it go before answering.
"What did you find?"
Daniel was quiet for several seconds. "Your grandfather’s name. William Sterling wasn’t the observer the document identified. We found the complete archive entry — the person actually listed as observer wasn’t William. It was his father."
"My great-grandfather," Adrian said, and the office went very still.
"The record doesn’t describe him as an employee of the Commission," Daniel said. "It says he was an independent financial contributor."
"Contributor to what, exactly? How wealthy was he?"
"Very."
For months the mystery had felt like an organisation watching Adrian’s family from a distance. This suggested something else entirely — that the family might have been involved with whatever this was long before anyone started watching them at all.
"Find every company my great-grandfather owned," Adrian said.
"That’s going to take time."
"Take it. And Daniel — how many more records are there?"
"Thousands."
Adrian leaned back. For the first time, the past didn’t feel like something chasing him. It felt like another acquisition — a body of information waiting to be properly understood, the way every other opportunity he’d learned to recognise over the last few months had waited, unnoticed, for someone willing to actually open the file.
"Send me everything," he said.
At 8:03, Adrian walked back onto the engineering floor. The Orion prototype was still there. Aether’s engineers were still working. Helios was running another batch, and Atlas was simulating network failure across three continents. Nobody here was building because the System had told them to, or because a reward was waiting on the other side of it. They were building because he’d given them a problem worth solving.
His phone vibrated. Daniel again.
I’ve found the first company. It still exists.
A second message followed a moment later.
And someone else owns it.
Adrian looked at the screen for a long moment. If his great-grandfather had built businesses decades before Adrian was even born, and one of them had survived into the present under someone else’s ownership, then this might turn out to be worth more than a family secret. It might be the first piece of an industrial history he hadn’t known he’d inherited — and possibly, without meaning to, a piece of the future he was already building.
He looked once more at the Orion prototype, then at the engineers still working around it, then back down at the phone in his hand.
Tomorrow, he’d start investigating the company. Tonight, he let his engineers work.
The machine had moved. The battery had survived three consecutive batches. The portfolio was growing without a single System reward behind it. And somewhere in the past, another Sterling had built something that had somehow outlasted half a century.
Adrian had spent months learning how to acquire companies. Now, apparently, he was about to learn what his own family had understood long before he was born — how to build them.
The engineering floor kept working long after he left it.
This time, he didn’t turn off the lights on his way out.
