Chapter 30: People come first, then positions;
Godolkin University.
On the campus grounds, some people were flying, and some were getting high.
Others were flying while getting high.
This Supe university was also known as the "Inhuman University."
Lucas didn’t pretend to be someone from Vought International this time; he came in his true form.
No more pretending! Time to show my hand!
I am Guardian!
His arrival caused quite a stir on campus.
Guardian, a member of The Seven!
One of the top five most popular superheroes in America!
Here in person to select talent at Godolkin University!
What did this mean?
It meant that whoever was chosen might go straight into The Seven, get endless advertising endorsements, and even land their own superhero series—it was a meteoric rise.
The school arranged a power showcase, allowing talented students to demonstrate their abilities before Lucas.
Lucas sat in the audience, crossing his legs.
Wearing a pair of large sunglasses.
He was holding a list of students in his hand.
Jordan and Cate Dunlap were prominently among the crowd.
Lucas had tipped them off in advance, telling them to show their best form.
The power demonstration began.
The first to come up was a dwarf student whose ability was to shrink and grow at will.
Just hearing about the ability, it sounded pretty good; in the San Fernando Valley, he’d be a big star.
As it turned out, he extended a hand and shrunk his pinky finger by 3 centimeters, then grew it back.
A useless ability.
Lucas signaled for him to step down and for someone capable to come up.
The second student was Asian.
Dressed in a tight suit and holding a pair of nunchucks, he seemed to be pandering to the judge, seeing that Lucas was also here.
Then, the kid swung the nunchucks with great vigor.
I have to say, the movements were very fluid.
"Kid, your tecnnique is decent, but I don’t think this counts as a Supe ability, right?"
The student put away his weapon and shyly stuck out his butt.
"Guardian, my ability is farting."
Then he let one rip, and a milky scent filled the entire arena.
"Sorry, today’s breakfast was coconut milk and garlic bread."
This time, before Lucas could even speak, the grade dean had already chased him off.
Lucas blew hard to clear away the smell of the fart.
A strong wind instantly swept across the venue.
The dean clutched the table, begging Lucas to please stop his display of power.
"Cate Dunlap."
Lucas simply called her name, saving himself from someone else pulling out a joystick next.
Cate Dunlap walked out from the crowd.
She had the look of a classic blonde queen bee, with delicate features and a very refined temperament.
"Guardian, my ability is Mind Control."
"Specifically, I can make the target see any image I want them to see."
"Do you need me to demonstrate?"
Lucas nodded.
Cate Dunlap walked toward the nearby grade dean and reached out to touch him.
The grade dean froze for a moment, then suddenly started screaming.
"Snakes!! The ground is covered in snakes!!"
He jumped onto a chair, shaking with fear.
He was most afraid of snakes; Cate Dunlap had read his mind and then projected an image for him.
In reality, there was nothing on the ground.
"...What just happened?"
The grade dean finally realized it was a Mind Control ability.
Mind Control that requires physical contact had a basically locked-in ceiling, unless Cate Dunlap could perform remote control and illusion projection.
But still, this ability could be used for interrogating criminals, so it did have its use cases.
"Is your ability effective against Supes?"
This was what Lucas wanted to know more about.
"Yes, as long as the target isn’t a psychic-type Supe. If they’ve undergone psychological training, it might be a bit difficult."
Lucas nodded and drew a circle on the list.
Asking Cate Dunlap these questions in public was just for the school’s benefit.
In reality, the position had already been pre-arranged.
No one else stood a chance.
"Next, Jordan Li."
Jordan walked out from behind the crowd.
At this moment, they were in their female form.
They walked to the center of the demonstration area and immediately switched genders.
Their figure instantly grew taller, muscles filled out, and their facial contours became rugged.
They transformed from their female form into their male form.
Then, they punched the test target at the edge of the playground.
Bang!
The wooden target exploded instantly.
"My male form is purely strength-based, with a limit of around a dozen tons."
They switched again, two balls of light lit up in their palms, and they threw them at the target wall.
Two large holes were blasted into the wall; looking at the impact, it was roughly equivalent to an anti-tank missile.
That was a punch with some real power.
Lucas nodded and drew a circle on the list.
Next, he symbolically selected a few more people to come up. Some had abilities even stronger than Jordan’s, but unfortunately... this was a pre-arranged job.
The person came first, then the hole was dug.
"Let’s just go with these two for now; they are better suited for the positions I’m offering." Lucas handed the list to the school authorities.
The school official rubbed their hands excitedly. Although Guardian didn’t pick the students they favored, having students selected by Vought International would still count toward their performance record.
"Guardian, are you going to have them join The Seven?"
"Not exactly, just an internship at Vought International."
The school official hesitated.
"Internship?"
"Yes, they’ll go to headquarters to learn first. They can only enter the next stage if they perform well. Not just anyone can join The Seven; it depends on their performance. Understand?" Lucas gave a suggestive look.
It wasn’t clear if the school official understood, but they gave an "OK" gesture anyway.
How they understood it would depend on what happened next.
Lucas found Jordan first for a private talk.
He flew up to the rooftop of the teaching building.
Jordan was leaning against the railing in their female form—they preferred to present themselves this way—holding a can of energy drink.
"Do you all-powerful superheroes always like meeting on rooftops?"
Lucas raised an eyebrow. "Rooftops are secluded, perfect for getting things done."
Jordan’s expression was strange.
"Do I have to let you ’lean’ on me to get the chance to join Vought International?"
???
Lucas slowly typed out three question marks.
I know you foreigners aren’t subtle, but surely you aren’t this open.
Although the female version of Jordan looked decent, the guy’s original form seemed to be male, and the female appearance was just a secondary gender manifestation of their Supe ability.
In other words, Lucas had no interest in men.
"I just purely like to show off, kid! As for the ’leaning’ part, I have someone else in mind."
Jordan looked regretful.
"Alright, honestly, I was quite looking forward to experiencing it. After all, not everyone gets to have a relationship with Guardian."
Lucas: "..."
"So, can I join The Seven now?"
Seeing Lucas speechless, Jordan asked tentatively.
"You’re overthinking it. The Seven wouldn’t pick an image like yours. Even though America is progressive, there’s still a significantly large population of normal people."
Jordan knew the other person made a good point.
"So...?"
"I’m giving you an internship opportunity at Vought International. Maybe in the future, you can become a candidate for the youth team."
Lucas started painting a picture of the future.
A candidate for the superhero youth team?
Jordan was tempted. In reality, just an internship opportunity at Vought International was a condition no student could refuse.
This opportunity was too rare.
"I accept!"
...
Then it was Cate Dunlap’s turn.
