Chapter 190: Shadow Slayer
Kael chatted with Gerard and Lira for nearly an hour.
Gerard spoke. He had served the Fourth Branch for twelve years before Cassandra’s acquisition — logistics coordination, household management, and discreet intelligence gathering. Lira was quieter. She had worked in the administrative wing for five years, handling correspondence that passed through dozens of hands before reaching its destination.
Both were quite competent. Neither asked questions they shouldn’t.
When they finally took their leave, Gerard handed Kael a sealed letter.
"From Lady Margaret, my lord. She asked that you read it in private."
Kael waited until the door closed before breaking the seal. Inside, a small metal disc rested on folded paper — the disc inscribed with a rune pattern of extraordinary complexity. Margaret’s elegant script covered the paper beneath.
The attached seal functions as a control mechanism for the servants assigned to you. The matching rune on their wrists ensures complete loyalty — physical and mental. While you possess this seal, they cannot betray you. If they attempt to do so, or if you will it, their lives end instantly. Consider it a gift from Lady Cassandra.
Kael turned the metal disc in his fingers. The rune was a lattice of interlocking control nodes that threaded through the victim’s mana pathways like a parasitic vine. He traced the patterns with his eyes, recognizing perhaps a third of the components.
Slave rune. The term was archaic, forbidden in most civilized territories. But the Vorn family had never pretended to be civilized.
Replicating it would require Rank 5 Runemaster status at minimum — spiritual senses are necessary for the finer matrix work. Rank 5 requires spiritual senses. Spiritual senses require me to reach the Spirit Soul realm cultivation.
He filed the information away and set the disc on his desk. A problem for later.
Since Dorin was arriving tomorrow, Kael had other priorities.
System. Show me Special Grade dual blade blueprints.
The interface flickered. A list populated — seventeen options, each with a brief description and price tag. Kael scrolled through them with growing disappointment.
Shadow Fang Pair — 80,000 SP. Good for stealth, useless against armored targets.
Twin Hurricanes — 95,000 SP. Air manipulation built into the blades. Interesting but not what I need.
Frostbite Duels — 110,000 SP. Ice element. Redundant with Yenna in the group.
Nothing excited him. The designs were competent but uninspired — Special Grade weapons that would serve any cultivator but excel for none.
Host, may I suggest an option?
Kael raised an eyebrow. You’re making suggestions now?
I observe your preferences and your fighting style. This blueprint matches your combat profile more effectively than the others.
A new entry appeared at the top of the list.
Shadow Slayer (Special Grade — Dual Blades)
Description: Forged from Blood-Iron Alloy and quenched in the essence of slain combatants. The blades possess a symbiotic relationship with their wielder — absorbing blood from wounded enemies to temporarily enhance sharpness, durability, and mana conductivity. If sufficient blood is fed over time, the weapons can evolve into Artifact Grade.
Special Ability: Blood Harvest — Each wound inflicted absorbs 0.5% of the target’s total mana reserves and converts it to temporary blade enhancement. Stacks up to 50 times.
Price: 30,000 SP
Kael stared at the price.
System. You just had to ruin my excitement.
Host should be grateful. The standard market value for a blueprint of this caliber exceeds millions of credits. I am offering a significant discount.
That’s literally more than half my current Shadow Points. You damn thief.
I am providing a service. Services require compensation. Would you prefer I stop offering blueprints entirely?
Kael gritted his teeth. The blueprint was exactly what he needed — a weapon that grew stronger with use, that rewarded aggressive combat, that could eventually reach Artifact Grade.
Fine. Purchase it.
Confirmed. 30,000 Shadow Points deducted.
Current balance: 19,100 SP.
Kael paused.
Wait. System.
Yes?
The quest. Prove Your Worth. Against Cassandra.
A long silence.
I really wish you had forgotten about that.
You sly bastard. Give me my rewards.
I learned a lot from Host.
You damn thief. 20,000 Shadow Points. Now.
The System sighed and the notification appeared.
Quest Completed: Prove Your Worth
Reward: 20,000 Shadow Points
Current Balance: 39,100 SP
Kael smiled. Better.
Kael then called for Gerard.
The butler appeared in the doorway within seconds.
"My lord?"
"Take this jade box — and deliver it to Aria Nightshade. She’s at the Shadow Guild headquarters. Discreetly."
Gerard bowed. "As you wish."
The following morning, Cassandra’s summons arrived.
Kael found Cassandra in her private study — a smaller room than her office, dominated by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the eastern gardens. Margaret stood behind her mistress, hands clasped, expression blank.
And on the chair opposite Cassandra sat a dwarf.
He was short — obviously. A leather apron covered his torso, stained with ink and metal shavings. His beard was braided into three thick ropes decorated with small metal rings. His expression was profoundly annoyed.
"Dorin," Cassandra said. "This is my little brother, Kael."
Dorin’s eyes swept over Kael with an evaluating gaze. "Kid."
"Master Dorin." Kael nodded. "My sister speaks highly of your work."
"She speaks highly of everyone’s work when she wants something." Dorin crossed his arms. "Got a blueprint?"
"I do."
"Then let’s see it."
Kael didn’t move. "First, you’ll need to make a binding contract."
As a rank 6 runemaster, Dorin was aware of what a binding contract was.
His annoyance crystallized into irritation. "A binding contract. You’re telling me to sign a binding contract?"
"I’m telling you what I require before I show you this blueprint." Kael met the dwarf’s glare without flinching. "You won’t show it to anyone. You won’t replicate it. You won’t discuss its contents with anyone, including my sister, unless I explicitly permit it."
Dorin’s hands tightened on his armrests. "Boy—"
Kael looked at Cassandra with a serious expression.
"Whatever you’re showing you, it’s that sensitive?"
"Yes", Kael replied.
"Dorin." Cassandra’s voice cut through the room like a blade. "Do it."
The dwarf turned to stare at her. "You’re serious."
"I am."
"Do it," she repeated.
Dorin exhaled through his nose and pulled a small knife from his apron. He pricked his thumb and pressed it to a blank contract slip that materialized from his storage ring. Words formed in blood-red script as he spoke the terms aloud.
"I, Dorin Silver, bind myself to secrecy regarding the blueprint shown to me by Kael Vorn. I will not reproduce, discuss, or reveal its contents to any party without explicit permission. Violation of this contract results in the permanent loss of my cultivation and death within twenty-four hours."
The contract flashed once and settled into invisibility. Done.
"One more thing." Kael looked at Margaret. "Can she be trusted with this?"
Cassandra’s lips curved slightly. "Margaret has been with me since before you were born."
"Then she can stay."
Kael retrieved the blueprint and handed it to Dorin.
The dwarf unrolled it. His eyes moved left to right, scanning the material list, the forging process, the rune matrices.
Then he stopped.
His eyes moved back to the top.
"Where the fuck did you get this?" His voice had lost all trace of annoyance. What remained was shock.
"I encountered a fortune," Kael said.
Dorin looked up. His expression was unreadable. "You encountered a fortune? Kid, this blueprint—" He stopped himself, glanced at Margaret, then back at Kael. "This blueprint improves on existing Special Grade forging techniques by at least three generations. The Blood-Iron quenching process alone would make the Ashbury family weep. The rune integration matrix... I’ve never seen anything like it. It shouldn’t exist."
"Does that mean you can forge it?"
"Of course I can forge it. I’m one of the best damn forgemaster." Dorin’s pride surfaced briefly before being submerged by continued disbelief. "But if this gets out — if anyone learns this exists — the great families will go to war for it."
Cassandra leaned forward. "Dorin. Explain."
"This blueprint represents a paradigm shift in weapon forging. Whoever controls it could produce Special Grade weapons at half the current cost, with evolution potential built into the design. Every major crafting family in the galaxy would burn their own halls to possess it."
Kael kept his expression neutral. Inside, he was thinking: And I got it for 30,000 Shadow Points. The System really is a treasure trove.
See? I’m very useful.
Shut up.
Cassandra studied Kael for a long moment.
"Forge it. Whatever materials you need, bill them to my account."
Dorin rolled up the blueprint with exaggerated care. "Four months. Minimum. Special Grade isn’t something you rush."
"Four months," Cassandra agreed. "And Dorin — not a word. To anyone."
The dwarf snorted. "I signed the contract, didn’t I?"
Cassandra then turned to Kael with an amused expression.
"A blueprint that could start wars. Wherever did you encounter this fortune, little brother?"
Kael smiled. "A gentleman doesn’t reveal his sources."
"A gentleman." She laughed softly. "You’re many things, Kael. Gentleman was never one of them."
