Chapter 191: Shadow Army’s Strength
One month later, the forest behind the Sixth Branch residence had become Kael’s testing ground.
Two months had now passed since he arrived back at the Vorn Estate.
Kael’s residence itself was grand now — expanded quarters, proper facilities, runic formations etched into every wall by Dorin Silver. The training room could withstand high Mana Heart attacks. The hot spring purified and healed. Kelvin Henderson had his own laboratory in the east wing and was already producing pills that made Maren raise both eyebrows.
But the forest remained wild. Three hundred hectares of untamed beast territory where Foundation Establishment creatures prowled the edges and Mana Heart beasts dominated the deeper regions
Kael stood shirtless in a clearing.
The Heaven’s Mirror Comprehension Pill had done exactly what Maren promised. Two weeks of enhanced cognitive capacity had accelerated his understanding of intent integration and domain mechanics by months.
He needed to test what he’d learned.
A chittering sound echoed from the canopy above.
Kael looked up.
The centipede dropped like a falling log — three meters of armored segments, each one the size of a dinner plate, with legs that ended in needle-sharp points. Mana Heart Rank 3. Its mandibles clicked with the rhythm of a ticking clock, and venom dripped from glands beneath its head, sizzling where it touched the ground.
From the left, a black spider the size of a horse descended on a silk thread. Mana Heart Rank 4. Its eight eyes reflected Kael’s image back at him in fragmented duplicates. The spinnerets on its abdomen glowed faintly — ready to fire binding threads at a moment’s notice.
Kael smiled.
The centipede struck first.
HISSSSSS—
A spray of venom erupted from its mandibles in a wide cone — corrosive, toxic, capable of melting through steel in seconds. Kael didn’t dodge backward. He shadow-stepped forward, passing through the venom cloud as darkness consumed his body and reformed him directly beneath the centipede’s segmented body.
His fist came up.
Micro-gravity compressed around his knuckles focusing impact into a single point. The punch connected with the centipede’s underbelly where two segments met.
CRACK.
Armor fractured. The centipede shrieked and thrashed wildly. Its tail whipped around, segments slamming into Kael’s ribs with enough force to send him skidding across the clearing.
He absorbed the impact with his body, feet carving trenches in the dirt. Before he could reset, the spider fired.
THWIP. THWIP. THWIP.
Three threads of reinforced silk — each one stronger than steel cable — lashed toward him from different angles. Kael shadow-stepped twice in rapid succession, each step carrying him less than two meters but repositioning his body completely. The threads missed. He applied gravity reduction to his frame and accelerated, closing the distance to the spider in a burst of speed that made the air crack.
The spider lunged. Kael ducked under its fangs, came up inside its guard, and drove his elbow into one of its eyes.
SPLAT.
The eye burst. The spider reared back, screaming and slammed two front legs down at him. Kael caught both legs with his forearms, muscles straining, and pushed back with a gravity-enhanced shove that sent the spider stumbling.
The centipede recovered and charged from behind, venom dripping. The spider regrouped, remaining eyes fixed on Kael with murderous intelligence.
The centipede’s poison spray came again. Kael sidestepped with gravity-assisted movement, letting the venom hiss past him close enough to feel the heat. The spider’s threads followed — THWIP THWIP — and Kael deflected one with his forearm while shadow-stepping through the other.
Then he stopped moving.
A 2v1, now that is not fair.
Both beasts paused. Their instincts screamed trap.
Kael formed the hand sign — index and middle fingers crossed at the wrists.
But instead of releasing Realm of Darkness outward, he did something different.
"Realm of Darkness: Darker Than Black."
The centipede’s shadow moved.
The dark shape beneath the massive insect’s body expanded, rising like black water from a suddenly disturbed pool. It spread outward in an eight-meter radius, swallowing the ground, the air, the light itself.
The centipede was trapped inside its own shadow.
It shrieked and thrashed, venom spraying wildly, but the darkness was absolute. Nothing it did could penetrate the barrier — even a peak Mana Heart cultivator would need several seconds to shatter it, and a Rank 3 beast had no hope.
Kael turned his attention to the spider.
The black spider’s eight remaining eyes narrowed. It recognized the threat escalation. Without the centipede’s support, it was alone against this human monster.
It fired threads.
Kael didn’t dodge. Devouring darkness pooled around his forearms, and when the threads touched the black substance, they dissolved — consumed like silk in acid.
The spider’s hesitation lasted half a second too long.
Kael shadow-stepped to its flank and drove his palm into its thorax with a quasar blast — repulsive gravity exploding outward from his hand.
BOOM.
The spider flew backward, crashing through two trees, its exoskeleton cracked across the abdomen. Green ichor sprayed from the wounds.
But the commotion had attracted attention.
Rustling of undergrowth, the snapping of branches, the growls and hisses of dozens of creatures converging on his position.
Foundation Establishment beasts first. A pack of six wolf-like creatures with crystalline fur, Rank 7-9 each. They fanned out at the clearing’s edge, watching, waiting for the bigger predators to soften him up.
Then the Mana Heart beasts. A serpent coiled in the branches above — Rank 1. A four-armed gorilla-like creature stepping out from behind a thick trunk — Rank 2. Three more spiders, smaller than the first, emerging from burrows — Rank 1 each.
Kael counted fourteen additional hostiles. The centipede was still screaming inside its shadow prison. The original spider was climbing back to its feet, ichor dripping.
Numbers are going to be annoying.
He formed a second hand sign — both palms pressed together, fingers interlaced, then pulled apart slowly as if tearing open a curtain.
"Shadow Army: Legion of the Void."
Five copies of Kael materialized from his shadow.
They were identical to him in appearance. But their eyes were completely black, and their auras carried only darkness.
The clones moved without verbal command. Three of them surged toward the Foundation Establishment wolves. One intercepted the Rank 2 gorilla. The last positioned itself between Kael and the emerging spider trio.
The wolf pack met the first clone with coordinated flanking. The clone responded by melting into shadow and reforming behind the alpha wolf, driving a darkness-coated fist through its skull. The other wolves panicked, scattering, but the second and third clones were already among them. Darkness lashed out in tendrils, coiling around limbs, crushing throats, bursting hearts from within.
The gorilla swung all four arms at the fourth clone. The clone flowed around each strike like smoke, reformed inside the gorilla’s guard, and buried both hands in its chest. Devouring darkness spread from the point of contact, consuming flesh and mana simultaneously. The gorilla’s roar became a gurgle, then silence.
The spider trio fired threads at the fifth clone. The clone didn’t dodge — it let the threads connect, then pulled. The spiders, anchored to their own silk, were yanked off their feet and slammed together in a tangled heap. Darkness swallowed them before they could separate.
The clones turned toward the remaining threats — the trapped centipede and the Rank 1 serpent that had wisely chosen to observe rather than engage.
Kael watched his army work with clinical satisfaction. Each clone possessed 30% of his physical stats and could use darkness-based techniques up to Heaven Grade. They were disposable, temporary, and absolutely lethal against anything below their weight class.
The serpent decided it wanted no part of this and fled.
Kael walked toward the wounded spider.
Its remaining eyes tracked him with desperate fury. One leg was broken. Its abdomen leaked ichor from the quasar wound. But it raised its front legs and hissed defiance.
Kael tilted his head.
"Let’s see what you’re made of."
The five shadow clones flanked the centipede as they entered into the dark realm.
