Chapter 198: Silence Falls
Pillar Knights.
Kael filed through the hierarchy as he walked. The servants of the Vorn family were organized into four tiers, each with distinct roles and authority.
First were the Blades — the personal guard of the Family Head himself. Twelve individuals, each one a monster in combat, answering only to the Unyielding. Even Cassandra couldn’t command them.
Second were the Flagbearers — squad commanders who led the family’s military forces. Competent, loyal to the branch elders who appointed them, but ultimately middle management in the family’s power structure.
Third were the Guardian Knights — elite enforcers assigned to protect specific family members and installations. Less lethal than Blades, more visible than Flagbearers.
Fourth were the Pillar Knights. The personal guards of the wives and their children. The muscle behind household politics. Every Pillar Knight was at least late Mana Heart, and the senior ones reached Spirit Soul. Only the wife who commanded them could issue orders — which meant Ursula, Marcus, and Thalia had direct authority over this squad.
And neither of them liked Kael.
He counted the presences again. At least two radiated the dense, compressed aura of Spirit Soul cultivators. The rest sat solidly in the late Mana Heart range.
At Rank 1, Kael couldn’t fight all of them. Not even with Aria at Rank 3 and Garrett at Rank 7. The Spirit Soul knights alone would crush them in a direct confrontation.
Kael made a decision. He ignored them completely.
He continued walking deeper into the lawless zone leading Aria and Garrett through alleys that grew progressively narrower and more dangerous. The Pillar Knights adjusted their formation to follow — maintaining distance, staying in shadow, believing they were invisible.
The false sense of security was the first step of his trap.
They walked for another twenty minutes before Kael felt a subtle shift in the shadow around him. A message, transmitted through the darkness itself — a communication method he hadn’t known the guild possessed.
Targets acquired. Awaiting confirmation.
Kael didn’t respond verbally. He simply adjusted his path — a slight detour through a dead-end alley that would take them past an abandoned warehouse district. The Pillar Knights followed, adjusting their own route to maintain the tail.
Confirmed.
The shadow guild moved.
The seven Pillar Knight presences suddenly became eight. Then nine. Then the numbers started fluctuating as shadow guild assassins engaged the tailing squad in the dark corners of Zenthoria.
It was over in less than three minutes.
The Pillar Knights — elites who expected to ambush a weakened twenty-year-old — were caught completely off-guard by master-level assassins who had been hiding in their blind spots since before Kael arrived in the city. No sounds of combat reached Kael’s position. No screams, no clashing weapons, no mana flares. Just the silent, efficient work of professionals eliminating obstacles.
One by one, the seven Pillar Knight presences winked out of Kael’s gravity sense.
Dead.
Every single one.
The shadow guild assassins had made it look like the work of local Zenthoria outlaws — blade wounds consistent with common street weapons, personal belongings stolen to simulate robbery, bodies dumped in locations where criminal activity was expected. No trace of Vorn involvement. No evidence pointing back to any organization.
The family’s eyes and ears in Zenthoria had been surgically removed.
**************************
The Rusty Nail bar — a grimy establishment in Zenthoria’s mid-district. The patrons gave the three cloaked figures a wide berth. In this city, people who hid their faces either had something to hide or were looking for trouble. Either way, smart people stayed clear.
Kael, Garrett, and Aria sat at a corner table. Masks covered their lower faces. Hoods obscured their hair. Their auras were suppressed to unremarkable levels.
"With the Pillar Knights dead," Kael said quietly, "I can officially drop the Vorn name in Zenthoria. No one’s watching anymore. No one’s reporting back."
Garrett leaned forward. "What’s the plan?"
"Baron’s intelligence identified the syndicate’s structure. Vasek controls the overall network, but his subordinates manage individual territories. We start with the weakest link — break their chain piece by piece before moving on to the harder targets."
Kael unrolled a small map on the table. His finger tapped a location in the eastern district.
"The Rust Fang Gang. They control the eastern smuggling routes and report directly to Vasek. Their stronghold is called Rust Fang Fortress — a converted warehouse complex with reinforced walls and a standing garrison of about eighty fighters. Ranks range from Foundation Establishment to early Mana Heart."
Aria studied the map. "Eighty fighters. Not insignificant."
"Most are trash. Foundation Establishment thugs with basic weapons and minimal training. The real threats are the three captains — mid Mana Heart, each with combat experience. And the fortress itself has defensive formations, though nothing sophisticated."
Garrett frowned. "A frontal assault on a fortified position with three people?"
"Not frontal." Kael smiled beneath his mask. "I’m going to break their door from a distance. Then we clean up what’s left."
They approached Rust Fang Fortress an hour before midnight.
The complex was exactly as Baron’s intelligence described — a cluster of warehouses converted into a defensive compound, with watchtowers at each corner and a central keep that served as the gang lord’s headquarters. The walls were reinforced with basic metal plating. Rune arrays glowed faintly along the perimeter — cheap defensive formations, probably purchased from a third-rate runemaster.
Kael, Aria, and Garrett stood on a rooftop three hundred meters from the eastern wall. The distance was deliberately far enough to avoid detection and close enough for precise targeting.
Kael raised his right hand.
Runes materialized in the air before him — Rank 4 Amplification Runes, arranged in a triadic pattern that would multiply the output of any technique channeled through them. Three runes became six, then nine, spreading outward in an intricate geometric lattice that pulsed with contained energy.
Garrett stared at the floating runes with visible surprise. "You’re a runemaster?"
"Part-time. But I must say, I’m quite talented in the art" Kael’s eyes locked onto the fortress as a smirked spread across his face.
Aria rolled her eyes.
"Aria. Garrett. When the defenses break, the lower-tier fighters will panic and scatter. Clean up the stragglers. I’ll handle the captains. I will call you if I need any help with them."
Both nodded.
Kael crossed his index and middle fingers and raised them toward the sky.
"SILENCE."
The runes ignited.
Lightning descended from the heavens — not a single bolt, but a concentrated pillar of electrical destruction channeled through the amplification lattice. The runes tripled its power, then tripled it again, transforming a Heaven Grade technique into something that cracked the sky open.
BOOOOOM.
The lightning pillar struck the center of Rust Fang Fortress with the force of a meteor impact.
The defensive formations vaporized. The cheap rune arrays overloaded instantly, their energy grids unable to handle even a fraction of the power being channeled through them. The reinforced walls buckled, then exploded outward, sending debris flying in every direction.
The central keep took the brunt of it. The building collapsed inward, floors pancaking on top of each other, crushed by the weight of the lightning’s concentrated fury.
Fire erupted across the compound. Secondary explosions followed as the gang’s weapon stores detonated under the heat.
Screams filled the night.
The lower-tier guards — Foundation Establishment fighters who had never faced anything close to this level of power — broke immediately. They ran in every direction, trampling each other, abandoning posts, fleeing into the alleys of Zenthoria like rats from a burning ship.
Kael dropped his hand. The rune lattice dissipated.
"Go," he said.
Aria and Garrett vanished into shadow and wind respectively, moving to intercept the fleeing stragglers.
Kael watched the burning fortress and felt three strong presences emerge from the rubble — the captains.
He stepped off the rooftop and descended toward them.
Kael’s cloaked figure dropped into the burning ruins of Rust Fang Fortress, three enraged captains turning to face him through smoke and flame.
