Chapter 197: The Lawless Zone
Kael studied her. His Spirit Eyes of the Dark Emperor flared silently, trying to parse her cultivation base. Nothing. Her aura was either perfectly suppressed or so far beyond his perception that it registered as absence. Both possibilities were equally unsettling.
His siblings had been trying to ally with the Shadow Guild for years. The guild was one of the most powerful assassin organizations operating across Vorn territory — a network of killers, informants, and shadow manipulators whose loyalty could tip the balance of any internal power struggle. Anyone who secured their alliance would have a significant advantage in the race for the Family Head’s throne.
"You wanted to see me."
"Yes." She moved to a cabinet and produced a tea set. "But I didn’t see what I was looking for."
"And what is that?"
"An important person."
Kael raised an eyebrow. "This person must be really important for the Shadow Guild master to personally search for them. Is he your husband?"
She laughed — a genuine sound that briefly transformed her severe features into something almost warm. "I wish."
She poured tea for all three of them. Aria accepted her cup with a confused expression. She had no idea what this conversation was about.
Neither did he.
They sat as they drank.
Twenty minutes passed.
"Since you have entertained me," the guild master said, setting down her empty cup, "I will give you one favor."
Kael smirked. "Then I’m afraid I’m going to be using that favor early."
She matched his expression. "And what will that be?"

The scene cut to the guild’s entrance corridor. Kael and Aria walked out of the guild.
"What was that about?" Aria asked quietly.
"Something I needed."
Aria sighed but didn’t press further.
Above them, in the third-floor office, the shadow guild master stood at the window. She watched the two figures exit the guild’s hidden entrance and disappear into the lower district crowds.
Her right hand rested on the windowsill. In her palm, barely visible unless one knew to look, was a symbol.
A serpent coiled around a sword, wreathed in shadow and starlight. A mark similar to the one Kael saw in his dream.
"It seems I won’t have to wait long," she murmured. "Your Highness."
************************
The Vorn Clan Transfer Gate hummed with spatial energy — a permanent installation hidden inside a nondescript warehouse on the outskirts of the capital. Kael and Aria stepped through the shimmering portal together, and the world shifted as they arrived on Zenthoria.
The air was heavy with smoke and the scent of blood underneath. The mana density was far lower than the estate, corrupted by whatever dark processes festered in this city’s underbelly. The sky above was perpetually gray, choked by industrial exhaust and the residual mana pollution of too many unregulated cultivators packed into too small a space.
They materialized inside a reinforced chamber — the Vorn Clan’s hidden branch office. It was small, utilitarian, and clearly designed for function rather than comfort. Weapon racks lined one wall. A communication array hummed in the corner. Maps of Zenthoria’s districts covered a central table.
And waiting for them was Baron Eltemiro.
The local Vorn branch manager was a thin man in his fifties with wire-rimmed spectacles. His cultivation was unremarkable — mid Spirit Soul, perhaps — but his eyes carried the sharpness of a survivor.
Behind him stood Garrett De Vorn.
Kael recognized him from Lira’s dossier. The Old Wolf was exactly as described — lean, weathered, with the patient demeanor of a hunter who had spent decades in the field. His blue-black uniform bore the insignia of a Shadow-ranked branch family member. Two short swords hung at his hips.
"Lord Kael." Baron Eltemiro’s smile was faint and grim. "Welcome to Zenthoria. I apologize that our accommodations are... modest."
"Baron." Kael nodded. "Garrett."
"Sir." Garrett’s voice was professional.
Baron gestured to the maps. "Please. Let me brief you before you step outside. What I’m about to tell you will determine whether you survive this city."
They gathered around the table.
"Zenthoria is not what the mission briefing suggests." Baron’s finger traced the city’s districts. "The bandits you’ve been tasked with eliminating are not random thugs. They are highly organized mercenary groups operating under a unified syndicate that controls this city’s entire economy. The syndicate boss — a man known as Vasek — has been consolidating power for fifteen years. Every gang, every black market dealer, every corrupt official answers to him."
Baron’s finger tapped a central district marked in red. "Vasek’s information network is the real danger. Every bartender, street merchant, and beggar in Zenthoria is a potential informant. If you use any signature Vorn techniques — gravity manipulation, recognizable combat styles — your location will be broadcast to the entire city within minutes."
Kael absorbed this silently as he maintained a neutral expression.
"There’s more." Baron’s voice dropped lower. "The Pillar Knights."
Garrett stiffened.
"Ursula has dispatched a squad of Pillar Knights to Zenthoria under the guise of providing observation support. Their actual instructions are to wait until you are weakened by the city’s criminal elements, then ’accidentally’ allow you to die. Or actively assist in your elimination."
Kael’s expression didn’t change. "How many?"
"Seven confirmed. Ranks vary — late Mana Heart to early Spirit Soul. They arrived two days before you and have established positions throughout the district where your targets operate."
Baron removed his spectacles and cleaned them. "The final point. In Zenthoria, the Vorn name is not a shield. It is a target. Trying to negotiate using your family’s authority will only increase the bounty on your head. The only language this city respects is swift, absolute, and untraceable violence."
He replaced his spectacles and met Kael’s eyes.
"I am telling you this because I have served this family for thirty years, and I have no desire to watch another promising child die for Ursula’s politics. What you do with this information is your choice."
Kael nodded once. "Thank you, Baron."
They prepared to move as they put on dark cloaks first. The kind of clothing that blended into Zenthoria’s perpetual twilight. Aria activated her shadow manipulation, her form flickering and fading until she was completely invisible.
Kael did the same. Darkness swallowed his body, bending light around him until he existed as a gap in the world rather than a presence within it.
Garrett shifted uncomfortably. "I don’t have any concealment technique."
Kael reached out and grabbed Garrett’s arm. The Old Wolf tensed as Kael’s shadow expanded around them both, pulling Garrett into the darkness.
Garrett vanished. His presence, his aura, even the sound of his breathing — all consumed by Kael’s shadow.
"Don’t speak unless necessary," Kael murmured. "Don’t use any identifiable techniques. And stay close."
They left the branch office.
The streets of Zenthoria were a maze of narrow alleys, crumbling buildings, and perpetual shadow. The few people they passed moved with the wary gait of prey animals — heads down, eyes darting, ready to run. Lamplight flickered from corroded fixtures.
Kael compressed their presence to near-nothing. Not just invisible — absent. He filtered out the sound of their footsteps, the displacement of air their bodies caused, even the subtle mana fluctuations that all living things produced. They moved through the alleys like ghosts, slipping past street-level lookouts who stared directly at them without seeing anything.
Ursula will have alerted every criminal in the city. Placed bounties. Spread descriptions. The moment we make a mistake, we’ll be swarmed.
He navigated by instinct and gravity sense, mapping the city’s layout through the subtle gravitational signatures of mass and movement. Buildings, people, vehicles — everything had weight, and weight had direction.
They were twenty minutes into the city when Kael felt them.
Multiple elite presences. Spread across a wide perimeter but maintaining consistent distance, keeping track of them.
A smirk appeared on his face.
Pillar Knights. Right on schedule.
Kael, Aria, and Garrett slipped deeper into Zenthoria’s lawless heart while seven hidden hunters followed at careful distance — unaware that they were the ones being led.
