The Rank 5 man charged Kael with fire-coated fists.

Kael formed a hand sign.

"Dark Summon."

The shadow beneath his feet split open and the demon wolf erupted into existence.

"Kill him."

The wolf launched itself forward.

The Rank 5 fighter barely dodged the initial lunge. Fire erupted from his palms — WHOOSH — scorching the air where the wolf had been a moment before. But the wolf was already circling, shadow tendrils extending from its fur to trip and snare.

Kael didn’t stand idle.

"Lightning Fang."

Crack!

A bolt of lightning struck the fighter’s left shoulder, forcing a pained grunt. The man twisted away, fire mana flaring defensively around his body.

"Lightning Fang."

Crack!

A second bolt caught him in the ribs as he tried to reposition. The fighter snarled and launched a counter — a concentrated fire blast that screamed toward Kael like a living comet.

WHOOOOOSH.

Kael shadow-stepped left. The fire blast passed through his afterimage and detonated against a stone wall — BOOM — sending rubble spraying across the courtyard.

"Lightning Fang."

Crack!

The third bolt caught the fighter in the thigh as he was still recovering from the missed attack. He stumbled, blood streaming from the burn wound.

"You shameless bastard!" The fighter’s face twisted with rage. "Fight me directly!"

Kael tilted his head. "Why? I’m already winning."

The wolf attacked from behind — slash, slash — claws raking across the fighter’s back. Fire mana flared defensively, but the demon wolf’s fur absorbed the heat like a sponge. The claws still connected, tearing through the fire cloak and opening four parallel gashes across the man’s shoulder blades.

"Aaargh—"

The fighter spun and drove his fist into the wolf’s skull. CRACK. The wolf’s head snapped sideways, but it recovered almost instantly, shaking off the blow.

Its retaliation was brutal. The wolf’s jaws clamped onto the fighter’s forearm — crunch — and twisted. Bone snapped. The fighter screamed.

He’s done.

Kael turned away.

The wolf would finish him.

Garrett was surviving.

Vasek’s fire fists met Garrett’s wind-reinforced blades in a continuous exchange of blows that lit up the courtyard with each collision.

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

Garrett moved like a dancer — light on his feet, blades tracing intricate patterns in the air, wind mana amplifying his speed and deflecting Vasek’s heavier strikes at the last possible moment. His style was fundamentally defensive, designed to outlast opponents rather than overpower them. Patience. Precision. Conservation.

But Vasek was Rank 9.

Every blocked strike sent shockwaves up Garrett’s arms. Every near-miss left scorch marks on his clothing and skin. The heat radiating from Vasek’s body was so intense that the air around them shimmered like a desert mirage.

"Is that all?" Vasek’s voice carried over the clash of their weapons. "The Vorn family sends children to kill me?"

Slash. Parry. Counter. Dodge.

Garrett didn’t respond.

He’s good, Kael thought, watching from the edge of his peripheral vision while the wolf finished disabling the Rank 5 fighter behind him. Better than his rank suggests. With a few years, he could develop sword intent.

Vasek pressed harder. Fire clones — three duplicates made of compressed flame — sprang from his body and flanked Garrett from different angles. The Old Wolf responded by creating a wind vortex that disrupted two of the clones, then deflecting the third’s strike with a precise blade intercept.

WHOOOOSH. Crack. Fwooom.

But the clones bought Vasek the opening he needed. His real fist — wreathed in fire so intense— connected with Garrett’s crossed blades.

BOOOOM.

Garrett was launched backward, skipping across the courtyard like a stone across water — bounce, bounce, bounce — before crashing through a wooden fence and rolling to a stop in a cloud of dust and splinters.

He stood immediately, blood running from a cut above his eye, both blades still gripped.

Vasek cracked his knuckles and advanced.

On the other side of the courtyard, Aria and Ruby moved in perfect synchronization.

The Rank 6 woman was being pushed back. Her sound-based ability was dangerous in theory: concentrated sonic waves that could shatter stone, disrupt internal mana circulation, and disorient opponents through sheer auditory overload.

In practice, she was fighting two opponents who countered her primary advantage.

Aria’s shadow manipulation absorbed sound waves before they could fully form, the darkness eating the vibrations like a sponge. When the woman tried to target Ruby instead, Aria intercepted with light-based attacks — concentrated beams that forced the woman to redirect her sonic output defensively.

Ruby’s contribution was more subtle but equally devastating.

Her misdirection ability meant the woman could never be certain where Ruby actually was. Water attacks came from impossible angles — splash, whoosh — because what the woman saw and what was real were often different things. Twice already, she had launched sonic strikes at Ruby afterimages, wasting mana and creating openings that Aria exploited.

The woman was bleeding from a dozen cuts. Her breathing was ragged. Her sonic output had weakened as her mana reserves drained.

"I’m done playing games," she snarled.

She raised both hands to her mouth. Mana gathered in her throat. The air around her began to vibrate.

"Echoing Death Scream."

SCREEEEEEEEEE—

A sonic attack that targeted not the ears but the nervous system itself, designed to overload sensory processing and shut down the body through pure vibrational trauma.

The scream expanded outward in a visible shockwave — BOOM — distorting the air, cracking the ground, shattering windows in a thirty-meter radius.

Ruby’s hands flew to her ears. The physical force of the shockwave pushed her back three steps.

Aria raised a shadow barrier. The scream hit it and cracked — fractures spreading through the darkness like ice on a frozen lake.

But the barrier held long enough.

"Now!" Aria shouted.

Ruby’s hands moved in a complex pattern. Water mana gathered from the air, from the blood on the ground, from the moisture in every breath.

"Water Dragon Technique."

SWOOOOOOSH.

A massive serpentine dragon of pure water erupted from the ground in front of Ruby. The dragon roared — a sound like crashing waves — and surged toward the woman with devastating speed.

Simultaneously, Aria raised her right palm.

Light particles in the area began behaving strangely. Photons that had been bouncing randomly off surfaces suddenly altered their trajectories — bending, curving, accelerating toward a single microscopic coordinate just above Aria’s palm.

Millions of light rays compressed into a space no larger than a marble. The density became so extreme that the photons began rejecting one another, creating a high-frequency humming vibration that sounded like a spinning turbine. A flawless, jagged sphere of blinding, neon-white energy stabilized above her palm, emitting a harsh kinetic pressure — a constant gale-force wind that blew dust and heavy debris away from her.

Looking directly at it would cause instant temporary blindness.

"Cosmic Spectrum: White."

FWOOOOOM.

The sphere launched.

The water dragon and the white sphere traveled different paths but arrived at the same destination — the Rank 6 woman’s position. She raised her hands, pouring every remaining ounce of mana into a final defensive sonic barrier.

SHRIEEEEEE—

The barrier met the attacks.

CRACK. CRACK. CRACK.

The sonic barrier shattered like glass — tink, tink, tink — fragments of sound-energy dissolving into nothing as the water dragon and the white sphere passed through the gaps and struck the woman simultaneously.

The water dragon engulfed her, crushing, drowning, suffocating. The white sphere hit the dragon’s core and detonated — KA-BOOM — creating an explosion of light and water that vaporized everything within a five-meter radius.

When the light faded, nothing remained of the Rank 6 woman but a smoking crater and the faint, scattered remnants of what had once been a human body.

Kael turned back to the main fight.

Garrett was losing.

The scorch marks on his arms and torso were multiplying. Vasek hadn’t taken a single clean hit, but Garrett had accumulated damage from dozens of near-misses and glancing blows.

Time to end this.

Kael raised both hands toward the sky.

Even though he hadn’t mastered the technique completely, he had learned it to a functional level. The Second Form of the Thunder God Technique required ambient electrical energy.

Crackle. Rumble.

The sky above the compound started turning dark.

Lightning sparked between them — crack, crack, crack — silent from the ground level because of the silencing runes Kael had drawn, but visible as flashes of cold white light within the storm.

People in the surrounding city blocks looked up at the sky with confusion. A storm? In this season? The weather mages would have predicted—

Crack-a-boom.

More lightning gathered. The electrical density in that point was becoming extreme — Kael could feel it through his connection to the forming technique, millions of volts compressing toward a single focal coordinate.

He waited two minutes.

The storm grew from a localized phenomenon to something that blanketed the entire northern district. Lightning arced between clouds in continuous streams — crack, crackle, boom — each discharge stronger than the last. The air smelled of ozone and charged particles. Hair on everyone’s arms stood on end.

Garrett noticed the sky first. He glanced up mid-parry, saw the churning clouds and the impossible concentration of lightning above them, and understood immediately.

"Garrett!" Kael’s voice cut across the courtyard. "Dodge!"

Now.

Garrett threw himself sideways — thump — rolling behind a stone pillar.

Vasek looked up.

His eyes widened.

The lightning bolt that descended from the sky was not natural. It was engineered — every volt within a two-hundred-meter radius compressed into a single discharge, a pillar of pure electrical destruction that turned the air itself into plasma.

"Thunder God Technique: Second Form — Wrath of the Thunder God."

ZAAAAAAAAAAAAP.

The bolt manifested directly above Vasek with no warning and no travel time. One moment it existed in the clouds. The next it existed on top of the syndicate boss.

Vasek reacted on instinct. His hands shot up, and fire barriers materialized — three layers of condensed flame, each one dense enough to withstand a Mana Heart Rank 8’s full-power attack.

The bolt shattered through the barriers.

SHATTER.

The residual lightning — weakened but still devastating — struck Vasek’s raised arms and deflected downward into his body.

BOOOOOOM.

The explosion was cataclysmic.

Vasek’s body launched downward like a meteor, driven by the force of the strike into the ground beneath him. The earth cratered on impact.

The shockwave knocked Garrett off his feet even behind his stone pillar. Ruby staggered. Aria braced against a wall.

Silence settled over the compound.
