Chapter 202: Bounty
Kael decided to entertain her for a bit.
Ruby Churchill was observing him with the cold assessment. Her ice-colored eyes tracked his movements, calculating speed, reach, likely abilities. What she saw was a cloaked figure radiating Mana Heart Rank 1 aura — nothing special, nothing threatening.
I better end this quickly before they overwhelm me, she thought.
Around the courtyard, the surviving gang members had regrouped near the edges, watching the duel with the confused wariness of men who didn’t know which side to root for. One of them — a scarred brute with a club — noticed Kael’s lack of syndicate markings.
"He’s not one of Vasek’s! Get him!"
The gang charged.
Ruby ignored them. Her hands moved in a fluid pattern, water mana gathering around her fingers. SWOOSH. SWOOSH. SWOOSH. Three water tendrils erupted from the ground, each one thick as a man’s torso, and surged toward Kael from different angles.
Kael drew his Void Edge blades.
"Sky Rending Technique. First Form: Falling Star."
Slash. Slash. Slash.
Three diagonal strikes — downward, each one carrying the concentrated force of slaughter intent and physical power. The water tendrils splitted into spray that misted the air around him.
Ruby’s eyes narrowed. The tendrils had been compressed — dense water that should have resisted blade attacks from a Rank 1 cultivator. His strikes had dispersed them effortlessly.
What is he—
For just a second — one fraction of a second — Kael’s vision left her.
It was the misdirection. He knew it even as it happened. Ruby’s ability didn’t just create false images — it manipulated perception itself, tricking the brain into processing false information. For that one instant, his eyes told him she was still in front of him when she wasn’t.
She was beside him.
SHING. SHING.
Two chakrams sliced toward his waist from point-blank range. Kael brought both blades down in a desperate cross-guard. The chakrams connected with the Void Edge weapons.
CLANG!
The impact sent him flying.
Kael crashed through a wooden wall — crash, crash, crash — splintering through two interior rooms before slamming into a stone pillar in what appeared to be a storage building. Dust and debris exploded around him.
He stood slowly, wiping blood from a cut on his lip. His arms ached from the impact — those chakrams carried more force than their size suggested. And Ruby’s mana control over them was exceptional, each throw carrying precisely calculated spin and trajectory.
Ruby stepped through the hole he’d made in the wall, water swirling around her hands in preparation for another attack. A massive water serpent began forming behind her — larger than the previous ones, its serpentine head hissing with compressed hydraulic pressure.
Kael rolled his shoulders and adjusted his grip on the blades.
Time to stop playing. I think I know her strength now.
He reached up with one hand and pulled back his hood.
Ruby’s water serpent froze mid-formation.
Her ice-colored eyes widened.
"Young Lord?" The serpent dissolved into spray. "What are you doing here?"
Kael smiled.
"Just taking a little stroll."
He clapped his hands together.
Crack.
Shadow spikes erupted from the ground across the entire courtyard — dozens of black pillars bursting upward in a pattern that covered every gang member still standing. The spikes killed the remaining gangs. Blood sprayed in dark arcs.
Ruby stared at the carnage with wide eyes.
This is the Sixth Son?
Footsteps approached from two directions.
Garrett De Vorn emerged from the eastern alley, wind swirling around his blades, his expression tight with controlled urgency. Aria materialized from shadow on the western side, her own weapons drawn, violet eyes scanning the courtyard before settling on Ruby with open curiosity.
"Young Lord." Garrett nodded sharply. "The southern base is destroyed."
"Kael." Aria’s gaze remained on Ruby. "It seems the whole group is here."
Kael gestured to the white-haired girl. "Aria, Garrett — this is Ruby Churchill. Ruby, these are my people."
Garrett’s eyebrows rose slightly. He recognized the name.
Aria did not. "Who?"
"Churchill family. From World One." Kael kept his explanation brief. "The prodigy. Dual ability wielder."
Ruby inclined her head. "You know of me."
"I know of everyone worth knowing."
Garrett spoke carefully. "What brings you to Zenthoria, Lady Churchill? This isn’t exactly Churchill territory."
"I’m here to destroy Vasek’s gang."
Silence.
"You and us both," Kael said. "Small world."
"Indeed." Ruby’s expression remained neutral. "Though I arrived first. You’re encroaching on my operation."
"I apologize. Shall I leave and let you handle Vasek alone?"
The sarcasm was thick.
Ruby’s lips twitched. "That won’t be necessary."
"Good. Because I’m not leaving."
A new voice cut through the courtyard.
"Heeeere to destroy my gang, what a joke."
The man who emerged from the main building didn’t look like a syndicate boss. He was lean, almost gaunt, with sharp cheekbones and eyes that burned like dying coals. Dark hair streaked with red fell across his forehead. He wore a long coat of black leather.
He walked with the unhurried confidence.
He turned to Kael and smiled.
"So you are Kael Cassian Vorn." He reached into his coat and produced a worn piece of paper — a bounty poster with Kael’s rough likeness sketched in charcoal. "You have quite the bounty on your head. A sum of 3.5 million credits."
Kael stared at him.
The silence stretched.
Kael’s expression went flat.
"What a disrespect." His voice carried the particular tone of a man who had been personally offended by mediocrity. "Only 3.5 million credits? I’m that cheap? I’m pretty sure I’m worth more. "
Everyone stared at him.
Garrett’s eye twitched. Aria’s mouth opened slightly. Ruby’s ice-colored eyes blinked once, twice, as if she wasn’t certain she’d heard correctly.
Did he just complain about his bounty being too low?
Vasek’s smile faltered. "I’m sure we can negotiate a higher price for your corpse—"
BOOM.
Fire mana erupted from Vasek’s body.
The explosion of aura was immense — far beyond what the intelligence reports had suggested. Baron’s information had placed Vasek at Mana Heart Rank 7. The pressure now radiating from the syndicate boss was Rank 9. Just one step from the peak.
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
The fire aura intensified, heat waves distorting the air around Vasek, making the burning buildings seem cold by comparison. Embers danced in his hair. The ground beneath his feet began to char.
Behind him, two more figures emerged from the main building. A woman with late Rank 6 aura. A man radiating Rank 5 power.
Kael assessed the situation in a heartbeat.
Vasek: Rank 9. Too strong for direct engagement.
The woman: Rank 6. Manageable.
The Rank 5 man: Manageable.
He turned to Garrett.
"He’s all yours."
Garrett’s head snapped toward him. "What?"
"Vasek. Rank 9. You take him."
Garrett stared at him with an expression that perfectly balanced betrayal.
Kael ignored the look and pointed at the Rank 5 man. "I’ll handle him."
He pointed at the woman. "Aria and Ruby. The lady is all yours."
Aria drew her blades without comment. Ruby’s chakrams appeared in her hands.
"Wait—" Garrett started.
"Move."
Garrett moved.
The Old Wolf launched himself toward Vasek with both blades drawn, wind mana screaming around him, and prayed that Kael had a plan that didn’t involve him actually winning a fight against a Rank 9.
Vasek’s fire-coated fist met Garrett’s wind-reinforced blades.
BOOM.
