Chapter 252: A Fight For Territories
The border between Starfall City and Greymoor City was a flat plain of yellowed grass, split by a dirt road that served as the unofficial boundary line. On one side, Kael’s forces assembled. On the other, Aldric’s army waited.
Kael floated above his men, the Cloak of Flight humming softly around his shoulders. His soul sense expanded, mapping both armies with precise detail.
His forces numbered approximately three hundred—two hundred Mana Heart soldiers recruited and trained over the past months, supplemented by a hundred late Core Formation and Foundation Establishment veterans from Trevor City’s absorbed bandit organizations, and fifty support personnel including alchemists, medics, and logistics. Disciplined, trained and loyal to him. But ultimately outmatched in raw numbers.
Aldric’s army was significantly larger. Ten years of stable rule had allowed him to build a proper military force—nearly five hundred Mana Heart and Foundation Establishment soldiers alone, with another two hundred in support roles. His warriors wore matching armor, moved in coordinated formations, and bore the markings of a professional military rather than a hastily assembled militia.
If both armies clashed directly, Aldric’s superior numbers and veteran experience would grind Kael’s forces down within hours.
Kael descended slowly, landing at the front of his formation. Across the field, Aldric stood at the head of his army, arms crossed, smirking.
The armies watched in tense silence.
"If both armies were to clash," Kael called out, his voice carrying across the plain, "yours would win. Eventually. But the losses would be significant on both sides."
Aldric’s smirk didn’t waver. "And?"
"So let’s avoid unnecessary bloodshed." Kael spread his hands. "One on one. You and me. Winner takes all."
Aldric frowned. "That’s not how territorial disputes work—"
"Unless you’re scared."
The smirk vanished.
Aldric’s aura exploded outward—Mana Heart Rank 7, four full stages above Kael’s Rank 3. The pressure swept across the battlefield, forcing Kael’s weaker soldiers to brace themselves. Heat shimmered in the air around Aldric’s body, flames flickering at his fingertips.
"You want to die that badly?" Aldric’s voice had gone cold. "Fine. But we establish terms first."
He stepped forward, his frown deepening. "If I win, I take Trevor City. And you give me sixty percent of Starfall City’s revenue for the next five years."
Kael’s expression didn’t change. "And if I win, I take Greymoor City. And you serve me."
Aldric’s eyes narrowed. Serve meant becoming a subordinate—losing his autonomy, his territory, his position as a Shadow. It was essentially political death.
"You think highly of yourself for a Rank 3."
"Do we have a deal?"
A long pause. Then Aldric reached behind his back.
The weapon that emerged was a chained dual blade—three segments of dark metal connected by heavy links, each segment housing a retractable blade. The central handle could separate, allowing the weapon to function as twin shortswords, or connect into a single massive blade with devastating reach. Tier 1 grade. The metal gleamed with a reddish tint, inscribed with fire-enhancement runes.
"Pyre Chains," Aldric said, spinning the weapon experimentally. "Twenty years of practice. I’ve killed hundreds of people with this blade."
Kael drew the Shadow Slayer blades, their black surfaces drinking in the ambient light.
"Are you not shameless," Kael said, "fighting your junior with a higher cultivation base?"
Aldric snorted. "Do you think I’ll underestimate you? After all, you defeated Lucian with a lesser cultivation." His eyes hardened. "I’m not going to make the mistake of underestimating a child from the main family."
Both fighters knew each other’s abilities now. Intelligence gathered, reports reviewed. Aldric possessed Earth and Fire manipulation—defensive grounding combined with explosive offense. A dangerous combination for someone who prized control.
"Begin," Kael said.
Lightning Body activated. White arcs covered Kael’s form.
Fire Body activated. Flames wreathed Aldric’s body like a living armor.
They clashed.
BOOM.
The shockwave flattened grass in a twenty-meter radius. Kael’s blade met Aldric’s central segment—Special Grade against Tier 1, the difference immediately apparent. Metal screamed against metal as Aldric brought his full Rank 7 strength to bear.
Kael deflected the strike with one blade while the other darted toward Aldric’s waist—
CLANG.
Aldric’s second blade intercepted. The chained weapon moved with surprising fluidity, segments shifting to cover blind spots. Kael’s strike scraped against metal, deflecting at the last moment.
Kael poured gravity into his next strike—enhancing the blade’s weight beyond what physical strength alone could achieve.
Aldric’s free hand moved. Stone erupted from the ground, forming a thin earth barrier around his waist. The gravity-enhanced strike hit the barrier and cracked it, but the force was reduced enough to spare Aldric serious injury.
He formed a hand sign with his free hand, flames gathering around the Pyre Chains.
"Pyre Chains: First Form — Burning Edge."
The blades ignited. Fire cascaded along the metal in a torrent of concentrated heat as Aldric swung in a wide horizontal arc.
Kael raised his palm. "Quasar."
Repulsive force erupted outward, meeting the fire wave head-on. The attacks destroyed each other—fire dissipating against gravitational pressure, Quasar canceling the remaining flames in an explosion of steam and scattered embers.
Kael followed immediately. "Lightning Fangs."
Five bolts of lightning fired in rapid succession—each one targeting a different vital point.
Aldric spun the Pyre Chains, blades becoming a blur of fire and metal. Burning Edge deflected three fangs. The fourth scorched his shoulder. The fifth—
Schlick.
A thin line of red appeared across Aldric’s cheek.
Kael pressed the advantage. "Dark Slash."
Concentrated dark energy erupted from his blade. The earth shattered, opening a trench that forced Aldric to dodge sideways.
The soldiers on both sides watched in awe. A Rank 3 dominating a Rank 7 through sheer technique and trickery.
Kael formed a hand sign. Both fists interlocking.
"Realm of Darkness: Darker Than Black."
Darkness exploded outward around Aldric, a wave designed to swallow Aldric before he could escape.
Aldric’s shadows stretched toward him, trying to swallow him—his own shadows turned against him by the technique. His eyes widened.
Aldric did the only thing he could.
Fire exploded from his legs—not an attack, but propulsion. A crude but effective rocket that launched him horizontally, out of the darkness wave’s path, tumbling across the grass as the realm sealed shut behind him.
He rolled to his feet twenty meters away, breathing hard, flames flickering weakly around his body.
Kael stood in the center of the darkness, silver-flecked eyes watching through the black veil.
Click.
Kael clicked his tongue.
