The Dragon Kings' Forbidden Witch

Chapter 88: The Forgotten Peaks

The night swallowed Morgana whole.

It was a different kind of darkness than the palace....not the darkness of stone corridors and shadow-filled chambers, but the darkness of open air and vast spaces, of sky that stretched infinitely upward, of mountains rising like ancient sentinels against the star-scattered night.

Within minutes, she had left the palace behind entirely.

The transition was almost physical, like stepping through a doorway from one world into another. Behind her, the palace gleamed in the moonlight, a structure of human ambition and human power. Before her, the mountains rose eternal and untouched, caring nothing for the games played by mortals and kings.

The path to the Forgotten Peaks was not a marked trail.

It was barely even a path at all, just a series of rocky outcroppings and narrow passages that wound between boulders and up the mountainside. But Morgana knew every step. She had walked this route since she was ten years old, back when she was still small enough that the journey took her the entire night. Now, stronger and faster, she covered the distance in less time, though the exertion still left her breathless.

The air grew colder as she climbed.

It carried the scent of snow and stone and something else....something ancient and primal that made her power stir in recognition. This was sacred ground. This was the place where her true self could finally emerge.

Her magic churned within her, responding to the landscape, to the proximity of Atheris, to the simple fact of being outside the suffocating confines of the palace. She could feel it building inside her like pressure behind a dam, all those weeks of suppression, all that careful control, all that desperate hiding finally finding an outlet.

By the time she reached the approach to Atheris’s cave, the sky was still dark, but there was the faintest hint of predawn lightening on the distant horizon. Stars were beginning to fade. The night was moving toward its end.

She walked through the narrow entrance, a gap in the mountainside barely wide enough for a human to pass through, and stepped into the cave.

And the world transformed.

The cave was not dark.

This was one of the first things that always struck Morgana when she entered, that despite being deep within a mountain, despite being removed from any source of natural light, the cave was illuminated. Not by fire or by any mundane source, but by magic itself. The very stones seemed to glow with a faint luminescence, as if they had absorbed centuries of magical energy and now released it in a soft, ethereal light that was somehow more beautiful than any flame.

The cave was vast.

Massive would be a better word. The ceiling soared high above, disappearing into shadows that even the magical light couldn’t quite reach. The space was enormous...easily the size of a great cathedral, with stone walls that rose and fell in natural formations, creating alcoves and chambers and passages that led deeper into the mountain. The floor was uneven, formed of stone and earth, but traversable. Stalactites hung from the ceiling like stone spears, and stalagmites rose from the floor like an ancient forest turned to rock.

And threading through it all, glimmering with a faint silver luminescence, were chains.

They were massive, thicker than a man’s leg, forged from some kind of metal that seemed to drink in the magical light and radiate it back out. They were anchored to the stone walls at multiple points, running across the cave in patterns that suggested they had been placed with intention and care. They were restraints, certainly, but not cruel ones. They left vast spaces of freedom within the cave. They allowed for flight, for movement, for the kind of existence that a creature of Atheris’s power and age required.

And at the center of it all, in a space of his own making, was the dragon himself.

Atheris was resting, his massive form coiled in a loose spiral on the stone floor. His scales caught and reflected the magical light in a thousand shifting colors, crimson at the edges darkening to deepest black at the center, with veins of gold running through them like molten rivers. His eyes were closed, but they opened the moment Morgana stepped fully into the cave.

Gold eyes. Ancient eyes. Eyes that seemed to contain centuries of memory and knowledge.

He lifted his enormous head, and his gaze fixed on Morgana with the intensity of something that had been waiting for her arrival.

"You came," Atheris said, and his voice was like the rumble of distant thunder, deep and resonant and carrying through the cave in ways that sound normally shouldn’t. It wasn’t words in the conventional sense, it was more like communication that bypassed language entirely and spoke directly to her understanding. "I felt your distress before you even reached the path."

Morgana’s throat tightened at the simple acknowledgment of his awareness of her suffering.

She moved toward him, her boots echoing slightly on the stone floor, and as she drew closer, she could feel the presence of his magic....vast and ancient and patient, surrounding her like a blanket, welcoming her as it always did.

When she reached him, she placed her small hand against one of his forearms, feeling the warmth radiating from his scales, feeling the slow, steady pulse of his ancient heart beneath the surface.

"I couldn’t stay in the palace anymore," she said, her voice small in the vastness of the cave. "I couldn’t breathe. I felt like I was suffocating."

Atheris made a sound...not quite a roar, but something lower and more thoughtful. He lowered his massive head until his face was level with hers, his golden eyes studying her with an intensity that made her feel truly seen.

"The palace is built for constraint," he said. "It is designed to limit and control. For one such as you, who carries fire within and magic in every breath, it is an especially cruel prison."
