The Duchess of the Attic

5. Duke's residence

Opal, as he was told, when he took dinner in his room, went into bed early and tried to sleep.

But there was no way I could sleep, and he finally started to gloat when the sun came up, and he fell asleep until noon as it was.

If I call Beth with a call bell, she'll have no choice but to set up a system.

It's like you're being blamed for living a lazy life.

Usual opals are early risers for aristocrats, but it was troublesome to explain that either way.

There's just something I have to do.

I have to talk to Mrs. Northam once.

Opal, who thought so, told Beth about it.

Then Beth walks out of the room in a shabby way.

Not an attitude towards my husband, but caution awaited a reply from the Lady to try again.

But after a while, I heard a knock, so I answered, and a strange woman came in.

Apparently, from who I am, this woman is Mrs. Northam.

"I heard you were calling?

"Are you Mrs. Northam?

"Yes. My name is late. My name is Talia Northam. My husband and I raised Joseph as Hubert's guardian when he died."

"Really? My name is Opal. Go ahead. You may call me Opal. Okay, back to you, I just said I wanted to talk to you, and I didn't mean to call you in. But because of this, may I start now?

"Absolutely."

Answering that, Mrs. Northam just tried to sit back on the couch, reminding her of her position, or stopped moving.

Seeing how it goes, Opal suggests to sit down with a bitter smile.

And Opal, sitting across the street, asked Beth for a cup of tea and cut it out to go straight in.

"I hear Mrs. Northam has cut you up as the mistress of this house for a long time now. Thank you."

"No, it's not like they're going to thank you. So, does the story mean you should turn over your mistress's seat?

Opal seemed frustrated by a rather strong statement, but he had returned his dislike from an older woman many times before.

If it's true, I wanted to say you're right, but I remember what Hubert said in yesterday's carriage, and I enjoyed it a lot.

"I'm not saying I can't. I'm still unfamiliar with a lot of things, so I'd like to ask Madame to tell me a lot if I can."

"Really?"

Opal didn't break his smile, even though he was frustrated by the reply, which just said it was natural for his wife.

If I had told Hubert this beforehand, the Lady would have been better at it.

"The only thing that bothers me is the master bedroom."

When Opal said thoughtfully, the lady looked grumpy.

But Opal kept staring straight at the lady, wondering if she was going to lose.

Now, Hubert doesn't have any feelings.

Little expectations were all smashed yesterday.

But when I got married and came to this mansion, it was weird and unacceptable just to think that another woman was using the master bedroom, even if I didn't have to cut this mansion up as my mistress.

"I don't know until now, but I've been married to this mansion as the Duke's - husband's wife. I wonder if your daughter, Stella, would use the master bedroom connected by a single door with her husband. What does the world think?"

"She... she's been living in that room for years now. But there's nothing in this mansion that leaks such a carefree thing outside!

"But maybe I'll talk to you, huh?

I just said this word because I was angry, and I didn't mean it.

There is no reason to say such shame from yourself in the first place.

But Beth breathed behind her back, and the lady shuddered and cried.

"That kid's been supporting Hubert the whole time! And now, even though Hubert's got his back on that girl! If they pull him away from Hubert, he'll be dead!

What an exaggeration, Opal felt sick of it.

The lady doesn't notice such an opal, she takes out her handkerchief and complains as she wipes her tears.

"That kid is a serious disease! I was told I couldn't live until I was twenty, but thanks to Hubert's dedicated support, I was able to work so hard..."

That's when the lady started crying out loud.

Opal was just staring at it.

I didn't think Stella was that sick.

No one told me. Just be hostile to Opal.

"I'm sorry. Because my husband told me Mr. Stella was weak, but he didn't know it was that bad. If that's the case, I wish you'd told me from the beginning."

Apparently Opal's apology doesn't reach the lady obsessed with crying.

Even Opal is not a ghost, so I wouldn't have said this if I'd known from the beginning.

Still, I think it's strange to use the master bedroom.

So, uh, I think Hubert didn't get married because Stella was sick, even though she cared enough to give him the master bedroom.

(But it doesn't mean just being around supports or protects you)

Opal had a chilling thought as Beth set aside her husband and stared at her crying Mrs. Northam as she was forgiving her and taking her out of the room.

Then, after a while, the loud footsteps approach.

(Oh, I'll see you later)

The moment I thought so, the door opened again without a knock, and Hubert, blushing in anger, came into the room.

"How awful a woman you are! Have you forgotten what I said yesterday!?

"Good morning, sir"

"What's good morning! She's really a woman with no blood or tears, such as just telling Mrs. Northam to turn over her mistress's seat and next thing I know, tell her to kick Stella out of her master bedroom!

"There is a misunderstanding in that story"

"Where is the misunderstanding! In fact, not only Mrs. Northam, but Beth, who was listening beside me, is also testifying!

"Really?"

The more angry Hubert got, the colder his head and heart went.

Hubert gets more and more angry with such an opal attitude.

"I wonder why I have accepted to marry you!? Not only are you mundane, but you are such a cold woman!

"... So why don't they take the marriage annulment process now? That will bring peace back to this mansion as well. But please return my money and my father's blessing."

"Become!?

"My husband asked me a question earlier, but he married me for a bribe, didn't he? And my husband got the money the way he wanted. We were able to pay our debts back safely, and the Duke's family's decency was preserved. And yet why should I be treated like this? The servants have no respect for me. Isn't it natural to be surprised there's another woman in the master bedroom? But they haven't even told me why, and this is how I can be blamed if I say a word. Why is that? I told my husband... what sin did you commit by rewarding the Duke's house? I didn't want this kind of marriage in the first place. My father ordered me to marry him."

"I had no choice..."

"Yeah, I had no choice. Or do you think I fell in love with you and begged my father?

Hubert blushed to the words he meant to joke about.

Apparently, that's what he thought.

Laughter creeps up at the silliness of it.

"I am not required in this House. All you need is money. Then why don't you just kill me?

Hubert breathed much more in the words and blued his red face.

I don't know if it's because the reaction surprised me unexpectedly or because I was thinking about it at all.

"I'm sure it'll work. It's only been a day since I've been married, and my servants hate me so much. Everybody's gonna keep their mouths shut, right?

"Then don't be silly!

"Yeah, it's really stupid. I had a little hope in this marriage. I was wondering if you would respect me a little as well as the money. But I understand very well. I really seem to be a disturber in this house, so you can think of me as something that isn't there."

"What..."

"As my husband said yesterday, I will live in my room secluded from seeing my dear Stella. Of course I'll let Beth know in advance when I go outside. So are you satisfied?

To be honest, I didn't mean to say this far.

But since yesterday - no, the anger I've been recruiting since my father ordered me to marry him exploded.

If they do, I'll do it back.

That was Opal's character from a very young age, and he was often told by consulates and child-friendly Claude that it was not at his grandmother's.

And even stubborn and mean.

Hubert didn't think he'd be disputed so far, he couldn't pinch his mouth much, he was just asking.

But once Opal had finished talking to me, he pulled his lips together and told me.

"If you don't bother us, you can do whatever you want!

Leaving words that also sounded like loss, Hubert turned his heel back and left roughly closing the door.

I just thought I might have heard the noise now as far as the master bedroom, and Opal sighed.

I'm sure you surprised your precious Stella.

Opal, who stopped by the window with that in mind, learned that he was unnecessarily worried.

There was a poor woman in a wheelchair in the garden looking down through the window, accompanied by her wife, who loved flowers.

When I tried to get away from the window that if I could find Opal here, I could hit Hubert with anger again.

My eyes turned to each other because the woman looked up all the time.

A woman smiles as soon as possible.

The grin looked so mean, Opal blinked.

Opal stepped away from the window, thinking that maybe that was because of the addition or subtraction of the light now or because he was looking up.

And ring the bell.

What we were going to do was the will of Opal.
