Chapter 11: Ch 11. Be Careful With Me
Roxyus seemed to swallow hard, then smiled sweetly. "My son... It’s not what you think; I wouldn’t poison you without a reason. There’s an explanation for all this; I’ll tell you bit by bit. Ask Selena to let me go first," he said, trying to remain calm and speaking in a fairly convincing tone.
"Oh? There’s a reason?" Selena replied casually. "May I hear your reason for poisoning your own son?"
Roxyus looked at her again, whilst Vylen had already taken a deep breath. It was still hard to believe, but he didn’t know what else to do.
"This is a matter for the fox clan; you don’t need to know too much," said Roxyus, his face still bearing a hint of arrogance despite his pitiful condition. "At first, I’d only called my son over for a chat—why did you come along and meddle?"
Selena smiled slightly, looking at Vylen, who was still staring blankly like a fool, having seen and heard his father’s confession with his own eyes and ears. Deep down, Selena knew there was a sense of resentment and sadness that he couldn’t hide.
Vylen Roxy was a sincere boy; naturally, he was devastated to discover that his own father had poisoned him.
"Your Majesty, the Fox King," called Selena, causing Vylen to snap out of his reverie and look at her. "Do you agree that I should let him go? Perhaps you need to speak to him in private."
Vylen’s eyes widened in disbelief. Was Selena still willing to release his father, even though the man had confessed to poisoning him?
What on earth was this woman up to?
Selena smiled as Vylen’s incredulous, questioning gaze fixed on her. This prompted her to push the cup forward, forcing Roxyus to drink its contents until he choked and coughed, unwilling to accept it.
"He’s already drunk the poison originally intended for you; only I have the antidote. So, even if he escapes, he’ll die within three days," Selena said, then calmly released her grip.
Roxyus, now free from Selena’s grip, immediately tried to vomit the liquid that had entered his mouth, but nothing came out. Selena instead struck several pressure points on his body, causing the poison to flow freely into his system and making Roxyus go limp and collapse into a chair.
"You..." Roxyus pointed at her in fury, but Selena merely smiled.
With a wave of her hand, Selena smashed every object on the table—the teapot, the tray and the cups. Roxyus turned pale as Selena clapped her hands as if to brush off dust.
"Talk to him; he won’t be able to do anything dangerous to you again," said Selena, smiling at Vylen, who stood frozen in shock at her firmness and authority.
"Where are you going?" asked Vylen as Selena walked away.
"I’m hungry; perhaps the roast meat Stevan’s been preparing is ready. I need to check on it," she said casually, then smiled gracefully, making Vylen swallow hard. "Please have a quiet chat; I’ll be off now."
Vylen finally nodded, letting Selena leave the room. As she closed the door from the outside, Selena still managed to smile with a devilish expression, gazing at Roxyus, who sat there helplessly.
"Crazy woman..." he hissed softly; Selena heard him but didn’t care.
As she walked towards her room, the servant who’d been waiting for her outside the room immediately followed her with alacrity.
"Your Majesty, Dragon King has sent you some food. He is waiting in your chamber," said the servant, making Selena smile broadly.
"That’s good news," she replied, quickening her pace.
Meanwhile, Coxy, who had been quietly following her, asked anxiously. "Your Highness, is the King all right, left alone with the Old Fox King? I’m worried, having overheard your conversation from outside," he said, causing Selena to turn her head.
Selena stopped just a few steps from her room. Her brow furrowed as she looked at Vylen Roxy’s personal guard, who appeared younger than the man himself. He had a gentle face, with pointed ears and a tail visible behind him.
"I wouldn’t leave him if he were still in danger," Selena replied calmly, causing Coxy to let out a heavy sigh. "What are you worried about? The Old King won’t venture out in a stable condition without my permission. He doesn’t have the antidote he used today."
"Really?"
"Yes."
Coxy let out a heavy sigh. "I hope so. Now I’ll start investigating when the Old King began studying and making poison. That’s not like him, because all this time he’s seemed like a laid-back man, living a quiet life after stepping down from the throne. It’s truly shocking that he’s the one who poisoned His Majesty the King," he said, looking both incredulous and disappointed.
Selena was silent for a moment. "Try to investigate thoroughly and report everything you find to me. Take your time; he’s not the sort to keep secrets too well. No one has suspected him all this time, so his tracks aren’t covered up too carefully," said Selena, prompting Coxy to nod.
The man suddenly knelt, paying the deepest of respects. This caused the servants nearby, as well as the guards—who also had fox tails and ears—to kneel in unison.
Selena was taken aback by the sight; it turned out she was not yet accustomed to her status as a Queen.
"Thank you for your help, Your Majesty the Queen. Thank you for being willing to save the Fox King’s life. From now on, we shall serve you faithfully and treat you well," said Coxy, followed by the other servants and guards.
Selena held back the surge of emotion welling up inside her—a mix of shock and joy. In her former life, she had been just an ordinary woman living from hand to mouth; even after she got married, their financial situation remained far from comfortable.
As a corporate slave at a paper company, Selena would sometimes work from morning to night and night to morning, split into two shifts. Being shouted at, receiving harsh reprimands and facing arbitrary treatment from senior staff or superiors was her daily routine.
But now, in her second life—having been reincarnated with new powers and a new body—it was as though the universe was setting her fate right and making her a Queen.
"There’s no need for that," Selena replied, then cleared her throat whilst trying to steady her still-racing heart. "Come now, just consider it part of my duty as the Healer of Extinction to lift the curse and resolve the problems afflicting your King. From now on, we may simply need your cooperation to ensure everything runs smoothly."
Hearing this, they bowed their heads before rising. "We are willing to do whatever Her Majesty the Queen commands."
Selena gave a small smile. "Get up," she said, and they all obeyed. "Just keep an eye on the area in front of the reading room where the Fox King is with his father. He won’t be able to escape, but if he’s desperate enough to fight for his life, he might just manage it."
They carried out her instructions obediently. Selena walked back to her room and smiled at the roast meat on the table, which looked so delicious.
"This is the tastiest meat I’ve got; I’ve made sure it’s cooked to perfection."
Stevan, who was there serving her, cut the meat into small pieces so that Selena could enjoy it more easily. His behaviour was quite kind and very different from his previous attitude, but as Selena was hungry, she put the past aside for the moment.
"King Fox’s life has been very difficult. Ever since I’ve known him, he’s been in poor health since childhood, but he’s hidden what his actual illness is. I’ve only just found out that he was poisoned, and that it was his own father who poisoned him," muttered Stevan, plucking up the courage to strike up a conversation with Selena.
"That’s par for the course in the world of power; don’t trust anyone, no matter how good they seem, if you want to ensure your own safety." Selena replied casually whilst eating her meat. "You should be wary of me, too."
Stevan was taken aback by her words. The Selena Grece standing before him now was a real improvement on the Selena Grece of the past. This woman was quite knowledgeable and, when spoken to, was able to respond in a composed manner.
Whereas the Selena Grece of the past had been nothing more than a spoilt, timid, shy woman who cried at the drop of a hat.
"Well, actually—"
Stevan’s words trailed off as Selena’s door burst open suddenly and hurriedly. Selena turned in surprise, only to find her servant and Derk standing there.
"What are you doing?!" Stevan snapped, displeased with Derk, who looked so anxious. "How dare you enter the Queen’s chambers without permission!"
Selena turned her head, chewing the meat in her mouth slowly; she already knew why this man had come.
"Forgive me..." said Derk, kneeling on the floor. "But Your Majesty, please look at the Wolf King’s condition! He’s had a headache for some time now and we haven’t been able to cure it. Please, Your Majesty, I beg of you..."
