Chapter 29: The First Allies
The mood inside Greenleaf shifted overnight. For the first time since the Black Fang threat appeared, hope outweighed fear.
Twenty warriors from Stone Brook had answered the call. Their gear was simple but their bearing was confident — longer spears than Greenleaf’s, leather armor reinforced with hardened bark. At their front stood a broad-shouldered man with gray streaking his hair. He bowed to Elder Sen.
"I am Borin. Captain of Stone Brook. Our Chief sends his greetings."
Elder Sen returned the bow. "You honor us with your presence."
"No," Borin said, smiling faintly. "You honored us first. When your messenger arrived, our council argued for hours. Some wanted to stay out of this war. But your message changed everything." He looked at Aren. "The young leader made us realize — if Greenleaf falls, we stand alone next."
Several villagers sighed in relief. One alliance formed — not enough, but a beginning.
The System appeared before Aren.

Aren smiled slightly. The System didn’t reward battles. It rewarded cooperation — exactly as civilization should.
That afternoon, a meeting gathered in the Elder Hall: Elder Sen, Borin, Doran, Aren, Jarek, Lira, and several hunters, around a rough map.
Borin pointed to the eastern valley. "My scouts counted at least ninety warriors, moving in organized groups. Shields of thick wood, heavier spears."
Doran frowned. "They’re prepared for open battle."
"They’ve done this before," Borin said.
Aren studied the map. "Have they ever lost?"
The room stilled. "Once," Borin said. "Many winters ago, they attacked a mountain tribe. The narrow paths split their warriors — they couldn’t use their numbers."
Aren’s eyes lit up. "The terrain defeated them."
"Not the tribe," Borin said. "The mountain."
The idea took hold. Aren pointed to the river crossing. "We’ll do the same." He drew lines across the map. "The Black Fang expects a direct battle, so we won’t give them one." He marked the nearby forest. "Small teams. Hit them, disappear, lead them toward the crossing."
Doran smiled slowly. "They’ll think we’re retreating. We’re actually guiding them."
"Exactly."
Jarek couldn’t hide his excitement. "We’re turning the battlefield into a trap."
Lira frowned at the map. "And if the wounded can’t retreat?"
"We build a field station here," Aren said, pointing to a low hill above the river. "Close enough to help, far enough to stay safe."
"I’ll prepare it," Lira said.
A young scout burst in mid-meeting. "Elder! The Red Moss Tribe—"
"What about them?"
"They’re coming. Fifteen warriors."
Elder Sen’s face brightened. "They accepted."
"But," the scout said, "they’re being followed. Black Fang scouts spotted them. Half a day out."
Borin grabbed his spear. "If the enemy captures them, they’ll learn about our alliance."
Aren’s expression hardened. "We can’t let that happen."
The System appeared again.

Aren closed the screen and looked at Borin. "Choose your fastest warriors. We leave immediately."
Neither man hesitated. Eight warriors stepped forward, and the rescue began. Somewhere in the eastern forest, the Red Moss warriors were running for their lives — and the Black Fang hunters were closing in behind them.
