Chapter 28: Messengers of Hope
The Greenleaf Tribe no longer resembled the peaceful settlement Aren had first entered. Smoke rose from dozens of cooking fires as villagers prepared food for themselves and for allies who might yet answer the call. Hunters inspected spears, tightened bowstrings, and sharpened stone blades against river rock. Even the children carried baskets of arrows and coils of rope between the houses. No one had been ordered to help — they simply understood that if Greenleaf fell, everyone would lose their home.
Aren stood near the village entrance, watching four young messengers prepare to leave. Each carried a water skin, dried meat, and a small carved token bearing Greenleaf’s symbol. Elder Sen handed each of them a sealed wooden tube. "Give this only to the tribal chiefs."
"We understand," they said.
Aren stepped forward. "If you meet Black Fang scouts, don’t fight. Your mission is to deliver the message — nothing else."
The oldest messenger nodded. "We’ll return."
One by one they vanished into the forest. Greenleaf’s future now rested on whether they reached the neighboring tribes in time.
The System appeared quietly.

Aren stared at the countdown. Every hour brought the Black Fang closer.
Doran approached with a bundle of wooden stakes. "The hunters are ready."
"What about the defenses?"
"Walls are stronger, but they’ll never hold against a hundred warriors."
"I wasn’t planning to rely on the walls," Aren said, and led him back to the map.
Hunters gathered around him. "We fight here," Aren said, pointing to the narrow river crossing east of the village.
One hunter frowned. "Not at the walls?"
"If we wait until they reach the village, we’ve already lost." He drew a line across the map. "This crossing is narrow — no more than eight warriors can cross at once."
Doran caught it immediately. "So their numbers become useless."
"Exactly."
Another hunter wasn’t convinced. "But if they force their way through—"
"They won’t," Aren said. "We won’t give them time." He marked a row of small circles along the riverbank. "Dig hidden pits. Sharpen stakes. Hide them under leaves."
Jarek’s eyes widened. "Traps."
"If we can’t beat them with strength, we’ll beat them with preparation."
The System appeared once more.

The hunters exchanged glances. None of them had ever thought to shape a battlefield before the enemy arrived. To them, a battle began when two sides met. To Aren, it began long before the first spear was thrown.
By afternoon the whole village was working. Some dug pits, others cut stakes, and the women braided rope to stretch between trees. Lira worked alongside the healers, sorting herbs into baskets — one to slow bleeding, one to ease pain, one to fight infection.
Elder Sen watched her. "You’ve learned well."
"My master always said a healer prepares before the battle begins," Lira said.
"She taught you wisely."
As the sun dropped toward the western mountains, a scout burst from the forest, breathing hard.
"Elder! I saw them — the Black Fang warriors."
The village went silent.
"How far?"
"Broken Pine Ridge."
Doran’s face hardened. "Less than a day’s march."
"They’re moving faster than expected."
Aren looked east. "They know exactly where they’re going." This wasn’t a random raid — someone had planned it carefully.
That evening the warriors gathered around the fire. No one laughed or sang. They listened as Doran walked through Aren’s plan again and again, until every hunter had memorized their position, their signals, their retreat routes. Failure wasn’t an option.
As darkness settled over the forest, a lone figure emerged from the western trail. Guards raised their bows. "Halt!"
The stranger lifted both hands and pulled back his hood, revealing a carved wooden pendant shaped like flowing water. Behind him, more figures stepped from the trees — one, five, ten, twenty, every one carrying a spear.
"I come from Stone Brook," the messenger said, smiling. "Our chief received Greenleaf’s message. He sent us. We will stand with you."
For the first time since the warning began, hope showed on the faces of the Greenleaf villagers. Aren smiled faintly. The first alliance had begun.
