The First Civilization

Chapter 15: The Count

Three days passed. The smokehouse never stopped working — day and night, thin streams of smoke rose into the sky. At first, many villagers doubted Aren’s strange invention. But on the third day, the smoked venison was finally ready.

Aren carefully removed a strip of meat from the wooden rack. Its surface had turned dark brown. Dry, firm, and carrying the rich scent of wood smoke.

Chief Rokan accepted the piece and examined it carefully.

"It doesn’t smell rotten."

"It shouldn’t."

Aren handed him a small stone knife. "Try it."

The old chief sliced off a small piece and slowly tasted it. The hunters standing nearby held their breath.

A long moment passed. Then Chief Rokan smiled.

"It still tastes good."

A wave of excitement spread through the villagers.

"It worked!"

"The meat didn’t spoil!"

"We can save food now!"

Several women immediately carried more fresh meat into the smokehouse. Even the elders who had opposed Aren earlier fell silent. One of them slowly walked over.

"I judged your idea too quickly."

Aren shook his head. "It’s normal to be cautious."

The elder nodded. "But from now on, I’ll listen before I judge."

Chief Rokan laughed. "I think all of us should."

The villagers shared a quiet laugh. Little by little, the village was beginning to accept change.

---

That afternoon, Aren wandered through the settlement. Children played beside the river. Hunters repaired their spears. Women cleaned animal hides under the warm sun. Everything looked peaceful.

Yet something bothered him. He stopped walking, his eyes slowly scanning the village — people, houses, food, tools. No one seemed to know exactly how much they actually had. The village simply lived from day to day.

The Civilization System suddenly appeared.

Aren frowned. "Census..."

The word felt familiar. Almost instantly, another memory surfaced — people writing names, counting families, recording supplies. Then it faded.

Aren whispered, "So that’s what we’re missing."

---

That evening, Aren found Chief Rokan repairing an old spear.

"I need everyone’s help tomorrow."

The chief looked up. "For what?"

"I want to count. The people. The houses. Our food. Our tools."

Chief Rokan looked confused. "We already know our village."

Aren smiled. "No. We know it with our eyes. But we don’t know it with numbers."

The old chief remained silent. Aren picked up several small stones.

"If we don’t know how much food we have, how do we know if it will last until winter? If we don’t know how many hunters we have, how do we know who can defend the village?"

Chief Rokan stared at the stones for a long time. Finally, he slowly nodded. "I understand. You want the truth."

Aren smiled. "Exactly."

---

The next morning, the entire village gathered in the open square. Many looked puzzled. Children whispered among themselves. Even the elders seemed curious.

Chief Rokan raised his voice. "Today, we count."

The villagers exchanged confused glances. "Count what?"

"Everything," Aren said, stepping forward. "Every person. Every house. Every basket of food. No one is being judged — we’re simply learning what we truly have."

The villagers slowly spread out. Some counted storage baskets. Others checked hunting tools. The children eagerly counted chickens wandering near the huts. Even Elder Mira joined, counting bundles of medicinal herbs.

Hours passed. As the sun reached its highest point, the first report was complete.

The Civilization System quietly appeared.

Aren stared at the panel. For the first time, the village was no longer just a place. It had become something that could be understood. Something that could be improved.

As the villagers gathered around to hear the results, Chief Rokan looked at Aren with quiet admiration.

"We spent our entire lives here, and yet... this is the first time we truly know our own village."

Aren looked toward the distant northern forest. The journey ahead was still long. But every civilization had to begin by knowing itself.
