The First Civilization

Chapter 16: The Council

The village remained busy throughout the day. Some repaired hunting spears. Others carried freshly cut logs into the storage area. Children chased one another between the huts, laughing as if the Grayfang attack had never happened.

Aren stood outside the storage hut, staring at the numbers displayed by the Civilization System. Forty-seven people. Sixteen days of food. Nine hunters.

The village finally knew what it possessed. But knowing was only the beginning. The real challenge was deciding what to do next.

---

As the sun slowly began to set, Chief Rokan called everyone to the central fire. The villagers gathered in a wide circle, some sitting on logs, others standing, all wondering why they had been summoned.

Chief Rokan stepped forward.

"Today, Aren showed us something important." He looked around the circle. "For the first time, we know exactly what our village has." He paused. "But numbers alone cannot protect us." His gaze shifted toward Aren. "You have another idea, don’t you?"

Aren slowly stood. "I do."

He looked around at the familiar faces — the hunters, the gatherers, the elders. Even the children were watching him with curious eyes.

"We have always solved problems only after they happen." He pointed toward the repaired wall. "The wolves attacked, so we rebuilt the fence." He turned toward the smokehouse. "Our food spoiled, so we built a smokehouse."

The villagers quietly nodded.

"But if we only react, we’ll always be one step behind."

Silence filled the square.

"So what should we do?" Doran asked.

Aren smiled. "We should plan."

---

The word sounded unfamiliar to almost everyone.

Chief Rokan folded his arms. "What do you mean by plan?"

Aren picked up several small stones and placed them on the ground. "This stone is food." He placed another beside it. "This is wood." Then another. "And this is our hunters." He looked at the villagers. "If we use everything today, what will we have tomorrow?"

Nobody answered. He moved one of the stones aside. "But if we save some, we’ll have enough when winter arrives."

The elderly villagers slowly exchanged glances. They had never thought that far ahead. For generations, they had simply survived one season after another.

---

Elder Mira finally spoke.

"The young man is right." She stood with the help of her wooden staff. "I’ve watched many winters. Some were kind. Some took children from our village." Her voice grew quieter. "If we prepare now, perhaps this winter will be different."

The square fell silent. Many lowered their heads. Everyone remembered someone they had lost.

Chief Rokan slowly nodded. "Then from this day onward, we don’t merely survive. We prepare."

---

The villagers spent the rest of the evening discussing what should be done first. The hunters suggested gathering more firewood. The gatherers wanted to collect more berries before winter. The elders proposed repairing every hut before the cold arrived.

For the first time, everyone was sharing ideas. Not arguing. Working together.

Aren quietly watched them, a faint smile on his face. This was what he had hoped for.

---

Just then, the Civilization System appeared.

Aren quietly closed the panel. The progress bar had finally moved — not because of a battle, or because of the system, but because the people had started thinking as one.

High above the village, hidden on a rocky ridge, the mysterious observer watched the gathering around the fire.

"They’re changing faster than expected." The stranger’s voice was calm. "They’ve already formed a council."

After a moment of silence, the figure turned away. "The other tribes must know."

The observer disappeared into the darkness of the northern forest. For the first time, news of Aren’s village had begun to spread beyond the valley.
