Chapter 50: The Gate of the Ancients

The gate moved. Not much. Only a few inches. But the sound was enough to silence the entire camp.

Stone scraped against stone, deep and slow, like something enormous was waking beneath the earth. Dust slipped from the ancient pillars and drifted through the golden light.

Nobody moved. Even the Seekers, who had spent the last several minutes preparing to open the sealed entrance, seemed uncertain now.

Aren stared at the narrow gap. Golden light spilled through it and touched the ground between the roots. He had seen that light before. Not in Stone River. Not in the ruins. In his memories. His chest tightened.

Then a voice came from behind the gate.

"Aren."

His breath caught. This time, there was no system window. No flash of memory. The voice was actually there. Someone was speaking to him from the other side.

Aren took a step forward. Doran caught his arm. "Don’t."

Aren barely felt his grip. There was something about that voice. It wasn’t familiar in the way a stranger’s voice became familiar after hearing it many times. It was deeper than that. Something inside him recognized it. Like hearing the voice of someone he had loved before he could remember their face.

Aren swallowed. "Who are you?"

The golden light shifted. For an instant, something appeared behind the opening. An eye. Large. Golden. Watching him. Then it disappeared.

Aren’s heart slammed against his ribs. The darkness behind the gate seemed to breathe.

"You already know."

Aren frowned. "No."

A quiet sound followed. Almost a laugh.

"You were always stubborn."

Aren froze. The words struck harder than they should have. He had heard them before. Not recently. Not in Stone River. Somewhere else. Somewhere he couldn’t reach.

His mind suddenly filled with warmth. Rain. A stone room. The smell of burning wood. Someone sitting across from him. A wooden cup being placed on a table. Then that same voice.

You were always stubborn.

Aren blinked. The memory disappeared before he could see the person’s face. He reached for it. Nothing. Only the cold forest remained.

---

"Aren!"

Lira’s voice pulled him back. He turned. The camp had changed. The Seekers were retreating from the gate. Their confidence was gone. One of them looked at the opening with wide eyes.

"What is happening?"

"I don’t know."

"You said the seal would hold."

"It should have."

"Then why is it opening?"

The leader didn’t answer. His hand trembled slightly around his weapon.

Varek suddenly grabbed Aren’s shoulder. "We need to move."

Aren looked at him. "The villagers."

"We take them."

"Then let’s do it."

Doran was already moving. He raised his hand and signaled the warriors. They rushed toward the captured villagers. The Seekers reacted immediately.

"Stop them!"

The camp exploded into motion. Steel flashed beneath the trees. Doran met the first attacker head-on. Their weapons collided with a sharp crack that echoed through the clearing.

Another Seeker lunged toward Lira. Jarek stepped in front of her. "Not today." His spear swept across the man’s path, forcing him backward.

Lira grabbed the nearest captive by the arm. "Come on!" The man stumbled. She caught him before he fell. "Keep moving!"

Aren dropped beside the remaining prisoners. His knife cut through the first rope. Then the second. "Move toward the trees!"

The villagers didn’t hesitate. They had already seen enough. They didn’t need to be told twice.

---

Aren freed the last captive when something slammed into the ground beside him. Stone shattered. He jumped away. A Seeker stood over him. The man’s hood had fallen slightly, revealing part of his face.

"You."

Aren raised his spear.

"You should have stayed away."

Aren’s grip tightened. "I could say the same to you."

The Seeker attacked. Their weapons collided. The first strike forced Aren backward. He dug his boots into the soil and barely maintained his balance. The man was stronger than he looked. Aren twisted his spear and redirected the blade.

The Seeker recovered quickly. Another attack came. Aren ducked. The weapon passed above his head. He stepped forward and drove his shoulder into the man’s chest. Both of them crashed into the ground.

Aren rolled away. He reached for his spear. The Seeker was already standing. The weapon came down. Aren raised his arm instinctively.

A stone struck the man’s wrist. His weapon fell into the dirt.

Doran stood several steps away. "You’re welcome."

Aren grabbed his spear. "Remind me later."

Doran gave him a brief grin. "Gladly."

The Seeker looked between them. Instead of anger, he smiled. "You still don’t understand."

Aren’s eyes narrowed. "Understand what?"

The man glanced toward the gate. "You’re not here to stop us." His smile widened. "You’re here to open it."

Aren’s expression hardened. "I don’t know what you’re talking about."

The Seeker looked almost amused. "You will."

Before Aren could question him further, the man suddenly bit down. Aren heard a faint crack. The man’s body went limp.

Doran rushed over. "He’s dead."

Aren stared. There was no blood. No visible wound. Just a body that had gone completely still.

Lira approached carefully. "Poison?"

Varek shook his head. "No." His eyes remained fixed on the dead Seeker. "Something else."

Aren looked toward the gate. The golden light had grown brighter. "We don’t have time."

Doran nodded. "Everyone’s ready."

---

Aren turned. The villagers had reached the edge of the clearing. Lira was helping an injured hunter. Jarek was supporting another man whose leg was bleeding.

Aren counted quickly. One. Two. Three. He kept going. Everyone they had found was there. At least, everyone they had found.

"Move."

They began retreating. For several seconds, Aren thought they might escape without further trouble. Then the ground shook. A deep rumble rolled beneath their feet. The villagers stumbled. One woman fell to her knees.

Doran caught her arm. "Keep moving!"

Aren turned around. The gate had opened wider. Golden light poured across the clearing. The ancient pillars trembled.

Varek had stopped walking. Aren noticed immediately. "What?"

Varek didn’t answer. He was staring at the gate. His face had gone pale.

"Varek."

"Look."

Aren followed his gaze. The stone wasn’t simply opening anymore. Something was appearing across its surface. Ancient markings began to glow one after another. The circle. The bird. The same symbol they had seen in Stone River. Then another mark appeared beneath them. A golden crown.

Aren’s stomach tightened. The system appeared before his eyes.

════════════════════════════

[ANCIENT SEAL INTEGRITY]

41%

WARNING: SEAL FAILURE IMMINENT

Aren stared at the number. "How long?"

No answer. The system flickered. Another message appeared.

[MEMORY SYNCHRONIZATION]

36%

Aren’s vision blurred. The forest disappeared. He was somewhere else.

---

A city stood before him. Not a ruined city. Not a dead one. A living city. White stone towers rose above wide streets. Golden banners moved in the wind. People filled the roads, carrying baskets, weapons, tools and strange objects Aren couldn’t recognize.

But something was wrong. Nobody looked relaxed. Soldiers stood at every intersection. Some watched the crowds. Others looked toward the distant palace.

Aren looked down. Armor covered his body. Not the heavy armor of an ordinary soldier. This was finer. Decorated. A red cloth rested across his shoulder. He stared at his hands. They looked younger. But they were his. At least, they felt like his.

Then someone shouted from behind him.

"Your Highness!"

Aren turned. A young woman was running toward him. Tears covered her face. She stopped in front of him, struggling to catch her breath.

"Your Highness, you have to leave."

Aren looked at her. "Why?"

"They opened the lower chamber."

His stomach dropped. "What?"

Another explosion shook the city. People screamed. A building collapsed somewhere in the distance.

The woman grabbed his arm. "We don’t have much time."

"Where are we going?"

"To the gate."

Aren stopped. "No."

She looked back at him. "You have to go."

"Everyone else?"

Her expression changed. For the first time, Aren saw genuine fear in her eyes. "They can’t come."

Aren shook his head. "I’m not leaving them."

"You have no choice."

"I do."

"You don’t understand." She stepped closer. "If you stay, the city dies with you."

Aren looked toward the distant streets. People were running. Children cried. Soldiers shouted orders. Something enormous moved beneath the ground.

The woman pulled him toward a narrow stone corridor. Aren resisted. "Who opened the chamber?"

She didn’t answer.

"Tell me."

"They were looking for something."

"What?"

Her eyes filled with tears. "The Crown."

Aren froze. The word felt strangely familiar. Before he could ask another question, voices echoed through the corridor.

"He’s still here!"

The woman turned. Soldiers were approaching. Their armor was different from hers. Dark. Several carried weapons Aren didn’t recognize.

The woman pushed him toward a stone doorway. "Remember this."

Aren stared at her. "What?"

Her hand trembled. "If you ever return..." She looked directly into his eyes. "Don’t open the city."

Aren shook his head. "Why?"

The woman opened her mouth. But no answer came.

---

The memory shattered. Aren gasped. The forest returned. His knees nearly gave out.

Lira caught his shoulder. "Aren!"

He looked at her. Her face was pale. "What happened?"

Aren tried to answer. Nothing came out. His breathing was too fast. Then, finally, he whispered, "I was there."

Varek stepped closer. "What did you see?"

Aren looked at the ancient gate. "I wasn’t just someone who knew about the city." His voice shook. "I lived there."

Silence. Doran stared at him. "What are you saying?"

Aren had no answer. Because he didn’t fully understand it himself. But one thing was becoming harder to deny. The ancient civilization wasn’t simply a story. Those people had been real. That city had been real. And somehow, Aren had once belonged there.

---

Another tremor passed through the ground. The gate moved again. Then stopped. The golden light slowly faded. The symbols on the pillars dimmed until only the golden crown remained.

Everyone stood still. Nobody dared approach. Then they heard it. A breath. Slow. Deep. Coming from behind the stone.

Lira’s eyes widened. "Something is alive in there."

Varek looked at the villagers. "Everyone needs to leave."

Doran nodded. "Agreed."

Aren remained where he was. He couldn’t look away from the gate. The Crown symbol continued to glow faintly. Then the voice came again.

"Aren."

He closed his eyes. "What?"

For several seconds, there was nothing. Then the voice whispered:

"Find the Crown."

Aren opened his eyes. The voice was gone. The forest was silent. The gate stood unmoving. But the golden crown remained.

Aren stared at it. A strange feeling settled over him. Not fear. Not exactly. It felt like being given a task he had once accepted long ago.

He turned toward the villagers. "Let’s go home."

Nobody questioned him. They began moving through the trees. Doran stayed close to Aren. Lira followed with the wounded. Jarek kept watch behind them. Varek was the last to leave.

Before stepping into the forest, he looked back at the gate. For a moment, something moved behind the narrow opening. Varek’s face tightened. Then he turned away. The group disappeared into the darkness.

---

The ancient gate remained alone beneath the trees. For a long time, nothing happened. Then the golden crown on the stone slowly faded. Deep beneath the sealed city, however, something stirred.

A chamber that had remained dark for centuries filled with a faint golden glow. Dust fell from an enormous stone throne. A figure sat motionless within the darkness. Its eyes opened. Golden. Ancient. Watching.

The figure slowly lifted its head. "The heir..." Its voice was barely more than a whisper.

Then a second voice answered from somewhere deeper in the chamber. "He has returned."

Silence followed. The figure looked toward the distant gate. "The Crown?"

"Still hidden."

"And the Seekers?"

"They have awakened the seal."

A long pause. Then the figure smiled. "Good." The golden light in the chamber grew brighter. "The boy will come looking for it."

Far above them, Aren continued walking through the forest, unaware of what had just awakened beneath the ancient city. He only knew one thing. The memories were no longer random. They were pieces of a life. A life he had once lived. A life someone had tried to erase.

And somewhere in the ruins of Ancient Maharlika, the Crown was waiting.
