Chapter 51: The Village Must Grow

Morning came quietly. For once, Aren didn’t wake to the sound of weapons being sharpened or people shouting warnings from the watchtower. He woke to something much simpler.

Hammering.

Someone was already repairing the damaged fence.

Aren stepped outside his hut and stretched his shoulders. The village looked different from yesterday. Not better. Not yet. But alive.

Hunters were carrying timber toward the western side of the settlement. Several villagers were sorting food supplies beneath a wooden shelter. Children were gathering fallen branches while the older men worked on the damaged huts. The people they had rescued from the forest were also slowly returning to their normal routines. Some were still exhausted. Some had injuries. But they were home.

Aren looked toward the edge of the village. The forest beyond the wooden fence was quiet. Too quiet. His mind immediately returned to the sealed gate. The golden light. The crown. The voice.

Find the crown.

Aren rubbed his forehead. He didn’t want to think about it yet. There were more immediate problems. Their village had survived. That didn’t mean it was safe.

"Aren."

Doran’s voice came from behind him. Aren turned. Doran was carrying two wooden poles over his shoulder.

"You’ve been standing there for a while."

"I was thinking."

"That’s dangerous."

Aren gave him a tired look. Doran laughed. Then his expression became serious.

"We need to talk to Chief Rokan."

"About the village?"

"About everything."

Aren nodded.

---

They walked toward the center of the settlement. Chief Rokan was already there, surrounded by several hunters. A rough map had been drawn on the ground.

Rokan looked up. "There you are."

Doran placed the wooden poles down. "We need to strengthen the village."

Rokan sighed. "I know." He pointed toward the damaged eastern wall. "The attack proved that our current defenses aren’t enough."

Aren crouched beside the map. "We shouldn’t only repair the walls."

Rokan looked at him. "What do you suggest?"

Aren picked up a stick. "Three things." He drew a line around the village. "First, the fence needs another layer." He marked several points. "Not everywhere. Only around the areas where enemies could easily enter."

Doran nodded. "That would save timber."

Aren continued. "Second, we need watch platforms." He drew small circles along the outer edge. "Two people can see farther from these."

Rokan studied the drawing. "And the third?"

Aren pointed toward the center of the village. "We need somewhere to store everything." "Food." "Medicine." "Tools." "Wood." "Stone." "Right now, everything is scattered."

Rokan slowly nodded. "You’re thinking about more than defense."

Aren looked toward the villagers. "If we keep rebuilding the same way every time something happens, we’ll never get stronger."

The old chief remained silent. Then he smiled. "All right." He turned toward the hunters. "You heard him." "Start with the storage building."

The hunters immediately began moving. Aren watched them go. The system appeared.

[Village Development Detected]

Current Settlement: Village

Development Direction: Defense, Food, Medicine, Construction, Population

Progress: 12%

Aren stared at the number. Only twelve percent. It wasn’t much. But it was something. Then another message appeared.

[Recommendation]

Strengthen the village before pursuing distant objectives.

Aren’s eyes narrowed. For once, the system wasn’t telling him to leave. It was telling him to stay. He smiled faintly.

"Looks like we’re staying."

Doran glanced at him. "What?"

"Nothing."

---

By midday, the village had become even busier. The first storage building was being constructed near the center of the settlement. Aren spent most of the morning helping organize the workers. He wasn’t the strongest person there. He wasn’t the best carpenter either. But he knew how to make people work efficiently.

Timber was placed near the construction site. Stone was stacked beside it. Rope and vines were kept under a small shelter to prevent them from becoming wet. Even the children were given simple tasks. Nobody was forced to carry anything heavy. They collected smaller branches and brought water to the workers. The village began moving like a single group.

Aren stepped back. It was still primitive. The walls were made from logs. The houses were small. The tools were crude. But there was order. That mattered.

---

Then he noticed movement near one of the huts. Lira was kneeling beside an injured hunter. Her hands were covered in blood. A woman stood behind her, holding a bowl of water. Lira carefully cleaned the wound before wrapping it.

"Slowly," an older voice said.

Lira glanced up. Mira stood behind her. The old healer carried a small wooden box filled with herbs. She watched silently as Lira finished the bandage. When Lira tied the final knot, Mira stepped closer.

"Too tight."

Lira immediately loosened it. "Sorry, Master."

Mira shook her head. "Don’t apologize." She touched the man’s fingers. "Look at his hand."

Lira frowned. "What about it?"

"He’s tense."

Lira looked more carefully. The hunter’s fingers were curled slightly. Mira continued. "You focused on the wound." "That’s good." "But a healer doesn’t only treat the wound."

Lira remained quiet. Mira gently adjusted the bandage. "You watch the patient." "His breathing." "His posture." "His expression." "Even the way he holds his hand."

Lira nodded. "I understand."

Mira looked at her for a moment. "Do you?"

Lira hesitated. Then she smiled. "I’m still learning."

Mira’s expression softened. "Good." She placed a small pouch of herbs beside Lira. "Then keep learning."

Lira looked down at the pouch. "You made these?"

"Some."

"The rest?"

"I taught you how to gather them."

Lira smiled. "I remember."

Mira gave a quiet laugh. "Then don’t waste what I taught you."

Lira nodded. "I won’t."

Aren watched from a short distance. He hadn’t meant to listen. But seeing them together reminded him of something. The village didn’t only need stronger walls. It needed people who could teach others. Mira had spent years teaching Lira. Now Lira was beginning to help others. That was how knowledge survived.

Aren looked at the system. A new notification appeared.

[Knowledge Transfer Detected]

Medical Knowledge is being preserved.

Village Development: Medicine +5

Aren smiled. "Interesting."

Doran appeared beside him. "What?"

Aren pointed toward Lira and Mira. "They’re improving the village too."

Doran watched the two healers. "Those two have been doing that long before you noticed."

Aren laughed quietly. "Fair enough."

---

That afternoon, Aren met with Chief Rokan again. This time, the meeting was smaller. Doran. Jarek. Lira. Mira. And several experienced hunters sat around the table. A rough map of the surrounding forest covered its surface.

Rokan pointed toward the northern side. "The footprints haven’t appeared again."

"Good," Doran said. "But that doesn’t mean they’re gone."

Everyone became quiet. Aren looked at the map. "We shouldn’t chase them."

Doran glanced at him. "You sure?"

"Yes." Aren tapped the village. "We don’t know who they are." "We don’t know how many there are." "And we don’t know what they want."

Mira looked toward him. "Then what do you suggest?"

Aren answered without hesitation. "We make the village difficult to attack."

Rokan nodded slowly. "We strengthen before we expand."

"Exactly."

Jarek leaned forward. "What about the forest?"

"We still hunt." "We still gather." "But no one goes alone."

Doran added. "Pairs at minimum."

Rokan looked around the table. "Agreed."

Aren then pointed toward the southern area. "We should also start growing herbs here."

Mira raised an eyebrow. "Medicinal herbs?"

"Yes." "We rely too much on whatever we find in the forest."

Mira considered the idea. "It could work."

Lira looked interested. "If we grow the herbs ourselves, we can keep a steady supply."

Mira nodded. "And I can teach the villagers which ones are safe."

Aren smiled. "Then that’s our next project."

The system appeared again.

[Village Development Project Created]

Medicinal Garden

Requirements: Cleared Land, Medicinal Seeds, Water Source, Herbal Knowledge

Reward: Village Medicine Development

Aren looked at Mira. "Can you handle it?"

The old healer smiled. "Of course."

Lira smiled beside her. "I’ll help."

Mira glanced at her apprentice. "I expected you to."

---

By sunset, the first part of the new storage building had been completed. It wasn’t impressive. Just four wooden walls and a roof. But the villagers stood around it proudly. It was theirs.

Aren looked at the structure. Then toward the repaired fence. Then toward the small area Mira had chosen for the medicinal garden. Nothing here looked like a kingdom. Not even close. There were no stone castles. No armies. No great roads. No banners. Just a village trying to survive.

But Aren no longer saw weakness in that. He saw a beginning.

The system appeared one final time.

Aren stared at the number. Thirty-six percent. He still didn’t know who he had been. He still didn’t know what waited behind the ancient gate. And he still had no idea what the golden crown meant.

But for now, he had something more important. A place to protect. A place to build. A place that could become something greater.

Doran walked past him. "You coming?"

Aren looked toward the village. "Yeah."

He followed. Above the trees, the last light of the sun disappeared. Far away, beyond the forest and the mountains, something ancient was still waiting. But Aren didn’t go after it. Not yet.

The village needed him first. And before he opened another ancient door, he would make sure the people behind him were strong enough to survive whatever came next.
