Chapter 18: The Council Stone

Sponsored

Silence lingered in the village square. Every eye stayed fixed on the smooth white stone in Chief Rokan’s hands.

The symbol carved into its surface was unlike anything Aren had ever seen. But the faces around him told a different story — the elders uneasy, the hunters trading nervous glances, even Elder Mira’s usually calm expression turned serious.

Aren broke the silence.

"What is the Council Stone?"

Chief Rokan exhaled slowly, turning the stone over in his hand.

"I never thought I’d see one again." He turned toward the northern mountains. "When I was a child, my father attended a gathering of the valley tribes. It happened only once — the chiefs met to discuss peace, trade, danger. That was more than thirty years ago. No gathering has been held since."

Tarek, the messenger, nodded quietly.

"The old ways have returned."

---

The villagers drew closer. One of the younger hunters frowned.

"If the tribes haven’t met in decades, why now?"

Tarek’s expression turned solemn.

"Because something has changed. The northern forest is no longer silent. Strange beasts have begun appearing. Several hunting parties have disappeared." He paused. "And the ancient ruins have become active again."

A chill ran through the crowd. Even the wind seemed to stop.

"The ruins?" Aren asked.

Tarek looked at him for the first time. "You’ve never heard of them?"

Aren shook his head.

"They’re older than every tribe in this valley. No one knows who built them, or why they were abandoned. But every elder knows one rule." His voice lowered. "Never enter them."

---

Aren’s heartbeat quickened. Ancient ruins — the words felt oddly familiar.

A sudden pain shot through his head. Fragments flashed before his eyes: broken stone walls, massive pillars, golden banners, a city stretching beyond the horizon, thousands of people walking through wide streets. Then it was gone.

*"Civilizations do not disappear overnight..."*

The voice echoed once, then faded.

Aren pressed a hand to his forehead.

Chief Rokan noticed immediately. "Are you alright?"

"I’m fine."

The pain was already gone. But the sentence stayed with him.

Civilizations do not disappear overnight...

---

That evening, Chief Rokan invited Tarek into the largest hut. Only the elders and hunters were allowed inside. Aren sat quietly near the entrance.

"When is the council?" Chief Rokan asked.

"In seven days."

"Where?"

"Stone River."

Several elders drew a sharp breath. "The old meeting grounds..."

Tarek nodded. "Every tribe has received the same invitation."

Chief Rokan narrowed his eyes. "Who called the gathering?"

For the first time, the messenger hesitated.

"I don’t know. The invitation came from someone calling himself... the Keeper."

The hut went completely silent. No one had ever heard that title before.

---

Night had fallen by the time the villagers drifted back to their homes. Only Aren stayed outside, standing beside the smokehouse, staring at the stars.

The Civilization System appeared before him.

This time, he wouldn’t be walking into the unknown alone.

Somewhere beyond the mountains, the other tribes were already preparing — waiting for the council that would decide the future of the valley.
