Chapter 31: Victory at the Pine Pass
The crashing trees shook the entire forest. Massive trunks slammed into the ground with deafening force, sending clouds of dust and broken branches into the air. For a moment the whole clearing seemed to shudder, as if the forest itself had been struck.
The Black Fang warriors cried out in surprise.
"The trees!"
"Move!"
"Watch out!"
Their once-organized formation instantly fell apart. Several warriors were knocked to the ground, pinned beneath splintered limbs or thrown off balance by the shockwave of impact. Others stumbled backward, coughing, unable to see through the dust that hung thick in the moonlight. Shields that had stood in a tight, disciplined wall moments ago now clattered uselessly against each other as men scrambled to find their footing.
It was exactly the opportunity Aren had been waiting for.
---
"Forward!"
Aren’s voice echoed through the clearing, cutting through the chaos like a blade.
Doran was the first to reach the battlefield. His spear shot forward with practiced precision, striking a Black Fang warrior’s wooden shield and knocking him backward into the dirt. He didn’t stop to check the man — there was no time.
Borin and the Stone Brook warriors followed close behind, boots pounding against the churned earth. Instead of charging wildly, they attacked in pairs. One defended. The other struck. Years of hunting together — tracking boar through dense underbrush, coordinating without a word — had made their teamwork almost instinctive. Where one man’s guard dropped, another’s spear was already rising to cover him.
---
Inside the defensive circle, the exhausted Red Moss warriors stared in disbelief at the destruction unfolding around them.
"They came..." one wounded warrior whispered, barely able to hold himself upright. "They actually came."
Their captain, a muscular man with a scar across his cheek, immediately reacted, shouting over the din of falling branches and clashing weapons.
"Don’t stand there! Break out!"
The trapped warriors answered with a roar. Their morale, nearly broken moments ago, surged back to life like a fire catching dry kindling. Weapons that had hung low in exhausted hands were suddenly raised again. They charged toward the nearest gap created by the fallen trees, pushing past splintered wood and torn earth toward freedom.
---
The battlefield descended into chaos. Unlike the disciplined formation the Black Fang scouts had relied upon earlier, they were now scattered across the clearing in broken clusters. Some tried to regroup, calling out to one another through the dust. Others attempted to climb over the fallen trunks, only to find the bark slick and the footing treacherous.
The narrow spaces between the giant trees became bottlenecks. Only one or two warriors could pass at a time, forced to funnel through gaps barely wide enough for a shoulder. Exactly as Aren had predicted. What had been an overwhelming numerical advantage moments ago now worked against them — thirty warriors crammed into spaces meant for a handful.
---
The Civilization Legacy System quietly appeared.

Aren didn’t even glance at the notification. His attention remained fixed on the battlefield, where the real danger was only beginning to reveal itself.
---
Then—
The scarred Black Fang commander stepped through the dust, unhurried, as if the collapsing chaos around him meant nothing at all. His eyes locked onto Aren.
"So..." he said. "You’re the one responsible."
Unlike the other warriors, who scrambled and shouted and fought to hold their footing, he remained calm. He wasn’t panicking. He studied the battlefield with surprising composure, his gaze sweeping over the fallen trees, the broken formation, the direction the Red Moss warriors were fleeing — reading it all in a single glance.
Aren immediately understood. This man wasn’t an ordinary fighter. He was a leader, and leaders like this didn’t rattle easily.
---
Without warning, the commander charged. His heavy axe cut through the air with terrifying force. Aren barely managed to dodge — the blade smashed into a fallen log beside him, splitting it almost in half with a single stroke.
Jarek’s eyes widened at the sight. "So strong..."
The commander pulled his axe free and smiled, unbothered. "Clever tricks. But tricks won’t save you."
He attacked again. This time, Doran intercepted him, planting his feet and bracing against the blow. Their weapons collided with a loud crack that seemed to ripple through the clearing. Even Doran, strong as he was, was forced back several steps, his arms aching from the impact.
---
"Aren!" Borin shouted. "We’ll handle him together!"
Three warriors surrounded the commander, spreading out to cut off every angle of retreat. Yet instead of retreating, he laughed — a low, genuine sound of amusement rather than fear.
"Finally. A challenge."
He swung his axe in a wide arc, forcing everyone backward at once. His strength was overwhelming, the kind that could end a fight in a single clean blow. But Aren noticed something as he watched the pattern unfold. Every powerful swing took time to wind up. His attacks were devastating, yes — but predictable, each one telegraphed by the shift of his shoulders before it landed.
A memory surfaced. Not a complete memory — just a fragment, hazy at the edges. Soldiers fighting in tight formations. One drawing attention. Another striking from the side.

Aren’s eyes sharpened.
"Doran! Keep him busy!"
"Borin! Attack from his left!"
"Jarek! Wait for my signal!"
Without hesitation, everyone obeyed, falling into position as though they’d rehearsed it a hundred times. The commander focused entirely on Doran’s spear, his axe rising and falling in heavy, deliberate arcs. Just as he pushed Doran back—
"Now!"
Jarek rushed in from behind. Instead of aiming at the man, he thrust his spear low, toward the commander’s legs. The commander jumped aside to avoid it, and for one brief instant his balance shifted.
That single moment was enough. Borin slammed his shield into the commander’s shoulder with everything he had. Caught off balance, the giant stumbled backward, boots skidding through loose earth.
Aren seized the chance. He pointed his spear directly at the commander’s throat.
"Stop."
---
The clearing fell silent. The remaining Black Fang scouts froze where they stood, weapons half-raised, watching their commander held at spearpoint.
Their commander looked at the spear before slowly raising both hands.
Then, to everyone’s surprise, he laughed — a deep, genuine laugh that carried none of the bitterness of defeat.
"So," he said, looking at Aren. "I underestimated you." He slowly stepped back. "This battle is yours." He raised one hand. "Retreat!"
The surviving Black Fang warriors immediately withdrew, carrying their wounded as they disappeared into the forest. No one pursued them. The clearing became quiet once again, filled only with the heavy breathing of exhausted warriors and the settling dust from the fallen trees.
The Red Moss captain walked toward Aren and bowed deeply.
"You saved our people. You have the gratitude of the Red Moss Tribe."
---
Before Aren could answer, the Civilization Legacy System appeared one last time.

Aren looked toward the dark forest where the Black Fang commander had disappeared, the man’s laughter still echoing faintly in his mind.
The battle had been won. But deep inside, he knew this had only been a test.
The real war was still approaching.
