Chapter 32: The Black Fang’s Shadow
The journey back to Greenleaf was far quieter than the battle itself. After the noise of falling trees and clashing steel, the silence of the forest felt almost strange, broken only by footsteps and the occasional low groan of a wounded man being shifted on his stretcher.
The wounded were carried on makeshift stretchers woven from branches and animal hide, lashed together in haste but holding steady all the same. Lira moved from one warrior to another, cleaning wounds with crushed herbs and wrapping them with fresh cloth, her hands quick and sure despite the hours she’d already spent on her feet. Although exhausted, a smile remained on her face. Not a single allied warrior had been left behind.
---
By midday, the walls of the Greenleaf Tribe finally came into view, rising above the tree line like a promise kept. The guards on the watchtower immediately recognized the returning warriors.
"They’re back!"
"The rescue party has returned!"
The heavy wooden gates opened, groaning on their hinges. Villagers rushed forward, some still wiping sleep or worry from their faces. When they saw the warriors of the Red Moss Tribe walking beside Greenleaf and Stone Brook hunters — tribes that had never once stood shoulder to shoulder before this night — cheers erupted throughout the settlement.
Children laughed, darting between the legs of the returning warriors. Women embraced their husbands, burying their faces against dust-covered shoulders. For the first time since the Black Fang threat had appeared, the village was filled with hope instead of fear.
---
Elder Sen stepped forward, his eyes immediately searching the group, counting faces before anyone could say a word.
"Everyone returned?"
Borin smiled, tired but proud. "We lost no one."
A wave of relief spread across the crowd, passed from person to person like a held breath finally released. The elder slowly bowed toward Aren, a gesture that silenced the murmuring around them.
"You didn’t just save another tribe," he said. "You gave ours the courage to believe."
Aren shook his head. "We all fought together. No one could have done this alone."
---
The Civilization Legacy System appeared.

The notification faded. But before Aren could relax, letting the tension of the night finally leave his shoulders, another scout sprinted through the village gate. He looked far more terrified than the previous messenger, his chest heaving from the run.
"Elder! We have another report!"
The celebration stopped instantly, laughter dying mid-breath.
"What happened?"
The scout struggled to catch his breath, bent over with his hands on his knees. "The Black Fang scouts... they didn’t retreat toward their homeland."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
"They stopped. They’ve made camp less than half a day’s march from here."
A heavy silence settled over the village, thick enough to feel. Doran frowned.
"They’re waiting."
Borin slowly nodded, his earlier relief already fading. "No... they’re watching."
---
Inside the meeting hall, the leaders gathered once more, the celebratory mood of moments ago replaced by something far more guarded. Aren stood over the wooden map, tracing the distance between the village and the reported Black Fang camp with his eyes.
"This doesn’t make sense," he said. "Their commander could have continued attacking. He had enough warriors."
Elder Sen folded his arms. "Then why withdraw?"
No one answered right away. The question hung in the air, unwelcome.
Finally, the Red Moss captain spoke, his voice low. "I’ve fought Black Fang before. Their leader never wastes lives. If he retreats, it means he’s planning something bigger."
---
Those words made Aren uneasy. The commander they had faced yesterday wasn’t reckless. He had accepted defeat too calmly, too gracefully for a man who had just lost thirty warriors and a battle he should have won. Almost as if he had achieved his true objective already, and the fight itself had never been the point.
---
The Civilization Legacy System suddenly flashed.

Aren’s expression became serious.
"This wasn’t the invasion." Everyone looked toward him. "It was reconnaissance. They wanted to test us. They wanted to measure our strength."
Silence filled the hall. Doran slowly realized the truth.
"They know about the alliance now."
Aren nodded. "And next time, they won’t send thirty warriors."
---
The wooden doors suddenly opened. Another messenger entered, his arrival startling everyone still absorbing the weight of Aren’s words. Unlike the others, his clothes were covered in dust from days of travel, and he moved with the stiff, careful steps of a man who hadn’t rested in far too long. He carried a carved stone pendant unfamiliar to everyone inside, its surface worn smooth by handling.
"I bring a message," he said, kneeling before the gathered leaders, "from the Stone River Tribe."
Every elder exchanged surprised looks. Stone River. The largest tribe in the region, one whose name alone carried weight in every corner of the territory.
The messenger continued. "Our Chief has learned of the Black Fang’s movements. He requests that the leaders of every allied tribe attend an emergency council."
He handed Elder Sen a tightly rolled piece of cured leather, its edges worn from the journey.
"The council begins in three days." He paused, his expression grave. "If the tribes continue fighting alone... none of us will survive what is coming."
---
The hall fell silent. Aren slowly looked toward the map spread across the table, tracing the scattered territories of villages that had, until recently, never spoken to one another at all.
First came one village. Then an alliance. Now the largest tribe in the region was calling every leader together.
The Civilization Legacy System quietly appeared one final time.

Aren stared at the final line. History Is Changing. For the first time, the System itself acknowledged that his actions were altering the course of this world’s future.
Outside the meeting hall, the wind carried the scent of rain.
Far beyond the forests, the true leader of the Black Fang Tribe had finally begun to move.
